    My god, that last line brought tears to my eyes. This island is unique in every way, it holds such a special place in my heart and I truly believe there is nowhere like Madeira on earth. It is the most spectacular, breathtaking island with the friendliest people and great food. My god my love for this island knows no bounds. I am literally counting the seconds until I can come back in October. Madeira, you are in my head, my heart, you’re in the blood that runs through my veins (literally as my dad is from the island). This tiny little island takes my breath away EVERY SINGLE TIME.

    Is it weird I still find it beautiful?
    Here's hoping there are no serious landslides in the coming years as the hills recover.
    Thank you for the coverage guys, Joen is a wizard with that drone.

    Major flood risk now in those valleys as we head into winter! Have those streams clear and ready. Mudflow risks also to any home with denuded hill above on hill! Time for preparing ahead with sandbags and diversions to any of those owners!

    It is indeed remarkable how beautiful Madeira remains, even when burnt down 😥
    Lobo do Mouro hiked it recently from Ribiera brava to Encumeada, I descended to Serra de Agua from levada do Norte, Mulitple times via Boca da Cerro either to Pico Grande or via Boca dos Namorados back to the Nuns valley, Many times from Arriero or Curral to Encumeada, one time via Lombo dos Portais via Ruivo to Arriero etc. Too many beautiful hikes and fond memories to mention....
    It is now the 4th forest fire I remember 2010 (Ecological park), 2016 (NE of Funchal), last years fire and now this one. In the ecological park it took a very long time before even the burn tree trunks got removed. Now finally scrub has returned but climbs from the Corrujeiras valley to levada Barriera remain highly unstable.
    I love the island intensely and it saddens me deeply to see the island suffer once more.
    Best wishes to all Madeirans and speedy recovery!

    Very nice drone footage reflecting the aftermath. You can clearly see the ridge effect of having a very humid north side contrasting with the very dry conditions on the south.This is the miracle that protected Boaventura and Sao Vicente. Do to your amazing filming and editing capabilities it would be great you could share is a long term timelapse showing how nature will recover in the next 12 months.

      The big problem here is that new life will grow, but it won't be the species that existed before. There will be invasive species such as eucalyptus and acacia, and there are endemic species at risk of extinction. Despite the efforts of the authorities, it is difficult to control the area and prevent it from happening again. As long as Portuguese legislation doesn't impose severe penalties on those who cause these disasters, it will happen again. Or they'll be punished by popular justice (I have very vivid ideas of what to do to these people). 😢

    The problem with wildfires, not just in Madeira but everywhere is the criminals that start the fire. Probably next time the aeroplanes could be used earlier, since now the authorities know it works well and fast.

    It is winter here in Sydney and we are having record breaking hot temperatures (high 20s) which is not normal. We have already had wildfires which is super early for it, there was one near my home and I can't imagine in summer. Small wildfires are perfectly fine as they help the forests rejuvenate but when it's a large scale like this one on Madeira, it could affect lives and homes. Stay safe!

    Even though the island is burned, it remains beautiful. It sounds strange, but it's true. Nature will recover quickly, and in a few months, everything will be green again. However, it is more important to prevent such fires or to respond more quickly. Why didn't the firefighting planes arrive earlier? With their help, the fire could have been extinguished much faster, and far less area would have burned.

  • @johnnylima9632
    @johnnylima9632 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This is exactly where the island got its name from apparently.Let me explain:
    My parents and sibling were born on Madeira (translates to ‘wood’ in Portuguese).Even though we now reside in South Africa, we lived there for a few years during my childhood.
    In Madeira there is a tale that goes like this:
    When the 1st discoverers got to the island, there was a wildfire (possibly started by them to eradicate some of the fauna or not I don’t know), and because the island wasn’t inhabited and the landscape had an even bigger population of trees etc. it is said the island burned for 7 years straight, hence the name Madeira (wood).
    Whether that story is myth or truth, I don’t know. Makes for a good story though.I always found that story fascinating, and could only imagine what it would look like to witness in person, this past wildfire has settled my imagination somewhat.

    Oh wow, such devastation. We hope no one was hurt. It’s such a relief to hear that the fires on Madeira have finally been contained. Nature can start to heal now. It’s truly amazing that the homes were spared despite such intense fires. A small miracle in the midst of destruction. There’s something profound about finding peace in the aftermath of chaos. Nature’s resilience is a powerful reminder. Nature has an incredible way of bouncing back. It’s heartening to know that Madeira’s beauty will return.

      So, what's the alternative? Coal or natural gas or other fossil fuel power plants, that emit CO2 to the atmosphere, witch is transforming the planet climate? Nuclear power plants that have the problem of the nuclear residues? Every energy source has his pros and cons. windmills and solar panels are the ones with least cons against the nature.

      @CarlRodrig 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@juvi999 yes, the nuclear is green, the problem is to guarantee the security of the facilities and the residues during thousands of years. A generation or two make use of the advantages of nuclear central, and than dozens of generations have to pay for it, to maintain the installations and residues secured, or pay for the dismantling, which is ultra-expensive, if possible. Dismantling solar panels or windmills is very easy, fast, and the nature can recover the places very quick.
