I agree with this. With a good story, you can convince any human anything. So I believe the 1% have had a forked tongue for some time. If you can convince Cooperation you can move the flock in a direction. And here we are. . .
For me, the biggest contribution from the book Sapiens by Yuval is that human's success as a specie is our unique ability for mass cooperations through stories we tell ourselves and each other, and it is both a gift and a curse. It allows us to do great things such as build cities and cultures, trades with each other, make progress in science and technology, create great work of arts and entertainments -- but also lead to conflicts that causes wars, animal cruelties, racisms, sexism, financial inequality, ecological disasters... and that all of it can be changed with the right story. It strangely gives me hope because of that perspective, and the knowledge that the most powerful and efficient tool for changes is for the stories to change. Also, I no longer judge as harshly with ideas I don't connect with personally, such as religions or political ideals. We all have to believe in some form of fictions for our world to function, including things I have taken for granted such as money, moralities, and human rights. It is what make us human. I am more open minded about ideas -- or at least know that mine is not as valid as another or their more invalid than mine. There's obvious exceptions when stories cause real suffering and harms, but the rest, they don't matter so much -- in the end we're all just talking chimps with tools, and stories.
Well summarised and your attitude of tolerance is so necessary for us to live together in harmony. But alas, it is exactly the stories that have been told and continue to be told and the new stories that will be told that make me not hold much hope in humankind moving forward.
I am very much in agreement with your brilliant synopsis. It reminds me of where I see myself heading philosophically in my old age. I'm becoming a child of the socratic paradox. That philosophy of "The one thing I know is I know nothing" is something I try to remind myself of every day. The possibility of anything that I believe may be flawed helps me to keep an open mind and become less judgmental of others . What I find so strange and sometimes infuriating about our species is for every one person who steps up to lead millions of us are willing to follow. Why? I ask myself why. Why do we so desperately want to believe in the stories? Why do we WANT to be led? Also I wonder do people actually believe the stories or do they just WANT to believe the stories. In other words can you actually convince yourself that something is true just because you want it to be? At the end of the day I realize how futile me pondering this is and the only thing that I should probably find important is how to find inner peace. I will depart with this thought, I ponder if there is a way to be a good person that is universal and timeless. I've come up with these three fundamental beliefs, Each one of us must strive to become our own leader, To accept that we have no right that our beliefs have no right over others. In my opinion one of the most destructive beliefs/ dillusions humans share is that we have the right to dictate how other people should live their lives. So number 2 would be to remind ourselves the words SHOULD and SHOULDN'T when referring to other people are Best kept to a minimum. Lastly, to accept that all we believe we know is not above being flawed and that's OK. That acknowledgment is what will keep us moving forward. Would love feedback especially if it's contradictory. Regards Santiago
Humans are herd animals who do nothing without a leader, unfortunately all the leaders are supplied by the elite group who want to trick the masses into willingly participating in their own self-destruction.
I absolutely enjoyed this lesson you compiled this concept so well and easy to digest. Sadly the people who should have listened to this aren't going to listen.

Fire hoses and police dog maulings are unacceptable in a comfortable, civilized society. We don't do public hangings anymore etc etc. BUT domination can be done socially, without oppression. I would like to continue to dominate the narrative with truth about social issues like apathy in a post scarcity society, the demography issue of less than 2 million people left on earth in 400 years or less, the ocean's carbon cycle and phanerozoic c02 being left out of the conversation while we went so many years without an EPA head.... The clean air act was the last thing our government did anything of worth until our last guy pulled us out of syria.
He certainly has not underestimated human stupidity! His ideas about "stories" directly fly into the face of all human knowledge and science. His should have stuck to his own story-telling while "teaching" history.

Lol. Kinda. Even when believable. He is going to show us how. You too, can write a book. But I am plenty liable myself. Pain can arrouse pride or humbleness. That's true with the pain of criticism, as well. While we all may need correction and change of previously coveted direction, we still need love each other as ourselves lest we be caught in likewise snare. Many slaves to an idea or foolishness can be pulled under the waves manacled to the same chains. But many can be pulled up by wings of truth, love and grace. Fear not those who can kill the body, but that which can cast into hell. Mercy rejoices against judgment, and justice, judgment and salvation kiss in God.
This is the best book I have ever read just like the audio. I am still reading it and with audio I hope I will understand it better. Thank you very much. You touched on almost all complexities we face in our daily lives and prophesized about the future.
The success of humanity lies within its ability to cooperate and believe in one story but if such story fails, could also lead to its demise. Humanity's strength is also its weakness.
Or you have different groups that believe in different stories (because its unreasonable and unjust to expect all human life to follow "one story") and as these groups learn more, they are able to be open minded and realize where their story ends and someone else's continues. Or a new story begins. Science is a new story beginning, but many refuted science and stuck with their metaphysical knowledge from their religious texts. Those people got left behind because they confused starting a new story, with dismissing their old stories. The old stories can have value but the new stories need to be at the forefront because there is good reason for them being new. It's not about following one story, it's about constantly following many stories and being always willing to find value in an untold story, as long as it has some provable bearing. Speaking entirely in vague metaphor opens this up to be easily argued against but hopefully you all understand my point. Civilization has never and will never believe in one story.
Precisely! The story that science is now trying to tell the American people and the world at large is that climate change will have very serious consequences and we must recognize our limitations. This is difficult to get across to Americans in particular. I taught earth sci and bio at the HS and com college level in the US, ocassionally engaging students in debate. I came to the conclusion that they believed as did their parents that anything is possible. For example, many of my students believed that teleportation is a real possibility, yet these same young people also believed that Noah's Ark is real. It's a crazy place
One story= tyranny This clown is nothing more than a globalist justifying his nonsense. He knows if his message was told to the masses. He would be hanging from a tree. Anyone suggesting digital dictatorship will Become more efficient than individual liberty….has an agenda.
A few points: 1. Religious stories are not about the material world, they are about the spiritual world. Don't expect religion to give an answer as to how to make a new computer. But yes look to religion to find an answer as to how to save your soul. 2. Homo sapiens is an aberration among all other life forms on earth. Humans encode knowledge as to how to survive not just in the DNA like every other form of life, but to a major degree in the learned knowledge passed from person to person and generation to generation. This is what distinguishes man from other life forms. 3. Technology is not the solution, technology is the problem, created by the mind of man which itself is an aberration. 4. Humanity among other forms of life on Earth bears an uncanny resemblance to a tissue malignancy on an individual's body. 5. Humans have triggered the 5th mass extinction event which may very well extinguish humanity as it progresses to its ultimate end. This is another way in which humanity resembles a malignant tumor on a body which dies when the malignancy achieves its ultimate end. 6. Marxism and communism were stories that sprang from the mind of man, and led to the death of a hundred million people. 7. Death occurs because of the second law of thermodynamics. No science can overcome the laws of nature. 8. The stories that people believe do organize human life, but no story, no matter how scientifically sound or technologically developed can save man from his own foolishness. 9. The stories about God in the Bible are not pure invention springing from the creative mind of man, but rather a reflection of the creative force of order in the universe whom some people refer to as God. As such, no story that presumes man can perform such creative acts and control every aspect of the natural world can ultimately be held to be true. Can a man put an electron spinning around every nucleus in every atom? Can man's technology create millions of galaxies spinning in the universe? Religious stories simply reflect the order found in our world. New human stories like that of Karl Marx just create a huge mess. So don't get your hopes up that we humans can create stories that will surpass the truths found in the the Bible. In my humble opinion.

Excellent. Good video and presentation. Oddly, in recent years (I'm 75 yrs), I've felt disconnected somehow from the nearer and greater society. I identified so much with the "good story" idea you presented. Through it, I recognized that the story going on in my mind was unique only to me. What to do? I don't know. But glad I clicked into this video. "Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind" was certainly not about what I had imagined and was expecting. It was a good story -- but without an ending. I guess that's the way history is, huh?
The realization of how life works can be devastating for our mental health. I have no idea what to do either, it is very interesting though. It's funny that we (or want to) stay optimistic anyway !
Our minds delve in the non-physical world. As our physical abilities dwindle, we have to seek shelter within our minds. So "stories" becomes more important to us. It protects us and keeps us sane.

I enjoyed that immensely. Reminds me of something I ask myself everyday. Why for every one of us who steps up to lead do millions and millions of us want to follow? Why do we want to be led? Is it just our herd mentality?
I really like how he always refers the fact that we must keep living on some fiction in order to feel secured. It's a common theme we humans had ever since we began imagining and fabricating stories, and identified with them so much that we fear they'll cease and will fight to protect them, even if it means going to war (ironically the only reason we even have these stories is because you have a crowd that believes, but has no biological reality). He gave the example of the Industrial Revolution - the change was too drastic and different than how they're used to living and thus they just had to hold onto some 'childhood' stories and aggrandize them for feeling more secure. Same with the declaration of human rights which lead to the civil war. Same with territories and country alliances which lead to WWI. This is why I believe there would be an enormous amount of resistance towards the emergence of non-organic life, biological and cyborg engineering because at some point it may actually change what we already define as human, and as humans this is scary. "... and it's the same basic reaction: When you threaten the stability of the world, many people, especially people who are about to lose from the new situation try to hold onto something stable and secure; and their first instinct is to go back, back to some story which seems eternal, immutable, and immune to all these dangers and changes." Also mentions you cannot find answers for new specific problems in old stories because back then these specifics did not exist, and that instead we'll probably see the emergence of completely new stories and ideologies/religions.

Dont waste your time. Human history is full of superb insights, tremendous deductive and inductive reasoning and astonishing and ingenious hypotheses that were presented and proven and many more that were prescient and only later found to be true and changes quickly adopted to reflect them.. The list is massive. I can think of many right off the top of my head. If you dont know history you would be well to begin with Aristotle and go right up through Issac Newton seeing what effects these minds caused. And the ingenious insights that raised civilizations and directed refined thought increase 1000 fold thereafter. Attempts such as are blatant in this insouciant video to dumb down or cast as stupid humankind's feats of true insight and reason come straight out of the Marxist playbook. This author's "story" is mediocre and his data is cherry-picked, nade to manipulate his contorted bounds and leaps in ignorant reductionism aimed at human history and advancement.. You will find these kinds of authors and the infantile books like Sapiens appealing to those who know next to nothing about actual history. Go to your library and pull off most any book especially historical-reference section, any book that overviews human advances arising from philosophy, politics, economics, mathematics, geometry or the physical sciences.
Lots of aha moments and insights that I need to think about. I agree with first principles thinking and everything about this video makes me think. The one thing I feel that Yuval is missing in his books and his video is the discussion of greed. Many of the wars were fought not because of stories but because of greed. Greed is responsible for many of our problems so i feel it's an elephant in the room in Yuval's writings.
This is really thought-provoking, with several “aha” or “hmm” moments. Humans are fundamentally a paradox. The ancients had worded it as “both beast and angel”. You can see it as “the glass half full or half empty”. To me humans remind me of the physicist’s particle-wave duality of “fundamental reality”, in the sense that *our* human reality is as much objective or material as it is symbolic or imaginary. 21st century physics has totally deconstructed (and destroyed) the concept of “objective reality” and “matter”. Even a block of hard granite is more than 99.99% empty space, with the rest being energy fields (or something like that!). In addition, as Yuval points out, it is our “stories”, our beliefs or our theories, that have shaped the objective reality of our planet, making it now to a large degree “the product of thought”. It sounds totally crazy or even worse, presumptious. But it seems to be that way. And if it really is, then it’s in good company: physicists now consider that the ultimate stuff that “physical reality” is made of is… “information”. Of course, like energy, nobody knows what it is. But like energy it is fundamental. Some will hear an echo of this in “In the beginning was the word”. As Yuval says, who knows what the 21st century holds in store for us! But if we want it to end like a good story, then we can remember Stephen Hawking’s “other formula”: Our chances of survival = (wisdom / knowledge) = wisdom divided by knowledge, so that if knowledge increases but ONLY knowledge…
Progress makes people Happpy? YES. Progress makes people happy because it's a process in which people successively work in solving the problems of the community and when they finally solve them another ones are faced. This process gives happiness in three ways: 1-Working to solve community problems it's a good way (not the only one of course) to give people a worthy goal to work for. Having a worthy goal to work for makes people life more meaningful and that makes them happier. This point only benefits atheists because believers already have a meaningful life and they are happy with it. 2-When the people who were working solving the community problem finally solve it, they experiment satisfactorial feelings that make them happy. This point benefits both atheists and believers. 3-When the community problem is solved, the life conditions of the community improve and that makes all its members to be happier. This point benefits both atheists and believers. Apart from providing happiness, working for a worthy goal keeps the mind busy, this way, one doesn't have time to think that we ignore the meaning of all that exists (worthy goals and human life included). Maybe this doesn't grant happiness but at least helps keeping depression at bay. Once again, this point only benefits atheists because believers already know the meaning of existence itself and that makes them happy. It's important to realize atheists need more than beleievers the existance of PROGRESS to be happy but when PROGRESS is achieved both believers and atheists reach the same level of happiness. Maybe that's why in the periods of History which ahteists have been more numerous, the PROGRESS of Humanity has been greater and in the periods wich believers have been majority PROGRESS has been slower. What makes PROGRESS even greater it's the fact that never stops. It's an INFINITE SOURCE OF HAPPINESS.

Human mind has its ego which is making them feel that he can challenge the nature. But the physical creation is so miniscule compare to the open space/cosmos.
This expressed perfectly "we are learning to manufacture, bodies and brains and minds of our self and other organisms". Scary stuff when you really think about it. Being more Caring and Compassionate with others (cooperate) than the rest of the animals it's the engine which has made us "run the world" (before humans the world was already running). Our Imagined Realities (political systems, religions, etc.) have been the awesome tool to channel these emotions and progress. The same way we can be more caring and compassionate, we also can be more selfish and hateful. It's the other side of the same coin, it's the price of being more emotional than an oyster. The same way we can "run the world" we can also "ruin it". What will we choose?
I have not read the book, and this video obviously cannot comprehensively cover all that may be in the book. But the video does not discuss the importance of language development in sapiens (although that is perhaps implicit in the "stories" he so emphasizes?); it also seems to mostly attribute human motivation and cooperation to "stories", when plain old greed and necessity, especially in early humans (we need food, let's take that other tribe's food) and even later (let's conquer and plunder (Romans, Genghis Khan)) was and is also a large part of what motivates human cooperation.
The fact that people find this reformulation of biological reductionism "deeply insightful" tells a lot about the inherently contradictory epistemological nihilism of our times.

Brilliant! I find it ironic however, that simultaneously, humans will discover remedies to prolong life, and at the same time become obsolete. What's the point of extended life, if ones existence serves no purpose? Life is a battle, and overcoming the obstacles of that battle, give meaning to ones life. In my humble opinion, that is. Struggle is only one part of many of what life is right? It is most certainly not the only thing that gives meaning to it. If you are concerned about becoming "obsolete" I urge you to re-define what your purpose is, and if there isn't one, find a way of accepting it and throwing a Tiki party! That's my subjectively objective take on it.
@@jaiku99 (1) I'm not sure stories are "not real". In some sense they are quite real. I guess that's more of a philosophical question than a linguistic one. (2) I don't know too much about this, but I think he might be oversimplifying and mischaracterizing Dayanand Saraswati, for example. He's right to an extent: people like Saraswati did advocate going back to the Vedas I guess. But I don't think these people wanted to find solutions exclusively in the Vedas. It's not just peachy-wonderful that humans can organize on large scales. It also brings some pretty horrific problems. When people get into groups of large enough numbers to start abstracting each other, individuals become expendable. One of the most brilliant video article I’ve come across in a long time. The second half has a lot of Nietzsche (and thus spoke zarathustra, the overman) when man has the ability to compete with a “god-like ability, therefore crossing that threshold for the first time and altering his destiny as was when man first made and used a tool/weapon, separating himself from his natural born limitations. The second was when he learned how to harness fire, the rise of man’s own forces separate from nature’s. The third is the 21st century of crossing over to a tech reality, unleashing god-like abilities and powers (Nietzsche’s overman).
Even this is just another story to tell, even this story can have horrible consequences (with our technologies even more devastating). It's out to people to decide the outcome of the any story.
@chris m you are right in some way, however in the future there will be another story about this time, maybe you will be amazed, but even now politics/ideologies etc. benefits one person/group at the risk of horrible consequences, they make up a story for you that you need to hear in order to be happy. We worship those gods more fanatical then people from old times. They tell you what you need to be happy. Just changed the object of worshiping. Piece of paper? subscribers/likes? bigger house? expensive car? iphone? Name it. As I told, It's just another story which includes previous stories.
One needs to read a lot more of Vedas to know their actual message, especially the Upanishads. They don't at all talk about paradise or the idea of god as described by Abrahamic culture. They are only concerned with human conditioning and what lies beyond this robotic living which is our true nature. Upanishad text is highly scientific in its approach towards the seeker. Therefore, these Vedas are still as useful as they were a thousand years ago. Like Harari says its is our ability to make and believe in the stories and Upanishads basically provide a way to go beyond faith and belief without denying the worldly reality as it is. One can read great german philosopher Arthur Schopanhaeur's work to understand it better. Even he has been highly misunderstood in the modern times.

Thank you for a wonderful summary of our history and a probable future in the near future. This video explains a lot of questions we all have of how we got here and which direction we are probably headed.
The first core of Yuval's book is that our superior Imagination is what makes us superior to the rest of animals (maybe there are others but that doesn't mean imagination is untrue, invalid or unimportant). The second core is that our superior habilty to cooperate (granted by our Imagination and its Imagined Realities) is what has made us be the most powerful living being in the world. Cooperation. NOT Competing like animals do in Nature. NOT Competing like we were taught when we were young. It's precisely competing what has doomed the rest of animals to be at our mercy (mercyless mercy more like it). The fact that maybe other things besides our Imagination have helped us into being more cooperative is another history for maybe another book. Thanks Yuval for showing us the path to Progress. The path to Happiness: IMAGINATION and COOPERATION. That being said though I think his book is so full of wrong or pessimistic ideas (which most I must admit I also shared) that I felt the need to fight them to try to "boost the morale of the troop" (and my own too by the way) a little bit (nowadays it's not precisely bursting out of joy). I know it wasn't needed because thanks to the least common of all senses (the common sense) almost everybody already disagreed with Yuval in many of the things he said (in amazon lots individuals already decided to give only one star out of five to his book) but thanks for giving me the opportunity, the freedom to argue some points in what I think it has been a constructive way more than a destrucitve or disrespectful one so common this days. I promise this is the last one: The american independence declaration has no sense if we translate it in objective biological terms. I DO NOT AGREE. As Yuval himself says in his book if we tranlate it it becomes "All humans have evolved in a different way and have born with mutable traits among which there is LIFE and the pursuit of PLEASURE". Personally I find this statement very sensible, reasonable and realistic rather than senseless. Even if we are 99,99% biologically equals as Science proved sequencing our genome, we are effectively 0,01% different. We have mutable traits (in the past or in undeveloped countries women have bigger "backyards" and breasts than modern women living in developed countries because the last ones, thanks to hospitals, don't need to have such big attributes to give birth to their children, individuals living in countries with high sun exposure have darker skin and eyes than the ones living in countries with less sun light, etc.). If not everything almost everything we do it's to obtain pleasure in the present or in the future or in the next life or at least to avoid suffering which would decrease our current level of pleasure (if we end up obtaining pleasure or not it's another history). We are alife. Following the wise, realistic Imagined Reality of Thomas Jefferson U.S.A. Americans (and other countries too) progressed much more than Hammurabi would have dreamt off because if we translate Hammurabi's Imagined Reality (code) into objective biological terms we get "a human eye it's the same as an entire human being" and that's nuts. To be fair with Hamurabi though the translation should be "a human noble's eye it's the same as an entire slave human being" which I (as follower of the Imagined Reality of the Human Rights) still think it's nuts. Sadly many people, even entire countries like India (not the only one though) are nuts and instead of following wise realistic Imagined Realites like the ones Gandhi or Thomas Jefferson imagined long ago, they trust nuts Imagined Realites like Hamurabi's code (Indian castes system for example). Curiously lots of americans (but not the only ones of course) can buy dozens of extremely cheap t-shirts made in India but few Indians can buy dozens of american made products (shirts or whatever). I hope some day Indians listen to Gandhi. Maybe that day americans (and others) will not be able to buy dozens of cheap t-shirts but breaking news ahead: no one needs dozens of t-shirts to live a decent life (but no one can live decently belonging to the untouchable caste). Oh, and I almost forgot one more "little" thing that made Agriculture and outstanding smash if we compare it to Hunter-Gatherers. It forced people to planificate, to IMAGINE the FUTURE harvest, etc. Having in mind that Human Imagination and Imagined Realities have been the key to human success, a system, an Imagined Reality which enhances imagination like Agriculture, we could say that it was the mother of all Imagined Realities. It was the mother of progress. The mother of HAPPINESS. Oh, and one last thing, even if U.S.A. Americans (and many others) followed great Imagined Realities like the one Thomas Jefferson imagined making them progress more than anyone, in the recent past have been following a very funny (though a little outdated for my taste) Imagined Reality called the Law of the Strongest while taking by force whatever they wished from whomever they wished. Curiously, nowadays, their own younger generations, their own beautiful babies are obediently following the same example thanks to their mirror neurons and no longer accept the results of a free electoral peaceful system called Democracy and just want to invade the Capitol by force to stablish their own new (ancient more like it) world order. Fitting. Fitting indeed. Knock, knock, THEY ARE HEEEREEE.....(progress and the happiness it brings I'm not not so sure). Truth be told maybe all started in Western Europe after all. In October 2017 to be precise. Back then Europe made the Law of the Strongest become trendy once more showing to the entire World (lots of international journalists were there covering the event) that even if it was a a bit old, that Law was much more cool than wasting time in Democracy or useless Freedom (pff who wants those. highly overated them two anyways. I'm joking). Mmh, unwise, unwise lesson to be taught indeed. Since then, curiously, mirror neurons started to work once again and BANG!! If you have the brute force you have the right. By right of might, yes sir!! (faster and more resolutive than all the other Imagined Realites like dances, languages, religions, science, laws, democracies, boring, zzzz snoring. I'm joking once again). Equation's result: Capitol invaded, Ukraine invaded, south american countries like Peru rebelling violently and putting their presidents in jail, etc. Butterflies and tornados maybe? One thing is for sure though. The Universe and its equalizers equations will bring Justice. One way or the other. For all. Maybe there could be a way to teach a different lesson to our beautiful babies to make their mirror neurons start working in a different more democratic, peaceful, productive way. Who knows, who cares, not me (well, maybe a little actually).
In short, we humans are responsible for our misery, the same way we are responsible for our greatness.
Yeah, humanity is a double-edged sword. We're cool... but we suck too.

@@captaingerbil1234 read the book if you haven't it is worth it.
@@hankensteinn I'm a little over halfway through it right now actually. It's a wonderful book.
Very well written man
Good review. Insight is the next level in communication?
Well summarised and your attitude of tolerance is so necessary for us to live together in harmony. But alas, it is exactly the stories that have been told and continue to be told and the new stories that will be told that make me not hold much hope in humankind moving forward.
A curse indeed, a double edge sword, to trust authority with no trustworthiness.
I've come up with these three fundamental beliefs,
Each one of us must strive to become our own leader,
To accept that we have no right that our beliefs have no right over others.
Would love feedback especially if it's contradictory.

astute summary

A few points:

"... and it's the same basic reaction: When you threaten the stability of the world, many people, especially people who are about to lose from the new situation try to hold onto something stable and secure; and their first instinct is to go back, back to some story which seems eternal, immutable, and immune to all these dangers and changes."
Also mentions you cannot find answers for new specific problems in old stories because back then these specifics did not exist, and that instead we'll probably see the emergence of completely new stories and ideologies/religions.
Wowww finally a quality video in TH-cam. Thanks for your efforts... keep going good job

The one thing I feel that Yuval is missing in his books and his video is the discussion of greed. Many of the wars were fought not because of stories but because of greed. Our gullibility is the source of our power!

This process gives happiness in three ways:
1-Working to solve community problems it's a good way (not the only one of course) to give people a worthy goal to work for.

@@daveydudely9954 Lol. Very good response. 😂
Hey, man, I'm president of the local Contradictory Epistemological Nihilists (South Eastern Montana) and I'm not really sure if I hate or am proud of your comment. But. it will certainly be the center-point conversation of our February meeting!
@@larsjames777 Sadly I can't be there (there's an ocean between us), but I look forward to the minutes of that meeting if at all possible!
@@theunisholthuis4212 I will send you an overview of the meeting and would look forward to your insight and input concerning our club. We're currently debating whether to make our motto: "Fuck Off!" or "Have a Nice Day!" Needless to say there is a bit of drinking and covert drug use during our meetings; fist fights are rare, but agreeable resolutions to the direction our club takes in the future is also an ongoing dynamic situation. Sadly, the one thing we do agree on is that we are all part of the Global Useless Class, and don't really care who knows this fact. Should I send you a club application?
@@larsjames777 Sounds like I'll fit right in. If a vote is cast, I'd like to have it known that - although my subjective choice of attitude might be nothing more than a meaningless effort at self-affirmation - I would vote for 'Have a Nice Day?", to emphasize the epistemological ambiguity of a greeting that is also a wishing..

You totally misinterpreted it.

These opinions should be seriously considered, or the 21st Century may very well be our last, and indeed the ........?........ shall inherit the earth (fill in blank as deemed appropriate to ones belief system).
Why so glum? I have no idea of the mind of god, or even if there is one to know. I know that a beautiful sunset resonates, and even more if I share it. I am not promoting crystals or feathers. Life can be struggle. We even put ourselves into struggle when we have free time! what is tennis, or football? It ain't the last century kid. And I want you to be enthused with the idea of living forever. Soooooo much to learn, to evolve.
@@editor4958 Glum? I didn't think I was being glum, but merely subjectively objective. Thx!
@@StephiSensei26 Your reply, though possibly playful, elucidates nothing. You said "What's the point of extended life, if ones existence serves no purpose? " who suggested that existence serves no purpose? That suggested that you are glum. You posited "Life is a battle, and overcoming the obstacles of that battle, give meaning to ones life." Struggle is only one part of many of what life is right? It is most certainly not the only thing that gives meaning to it. If you are concerned about becoming "obsolete" I urge you to re-define what your purpose is, and if there isn't one, find a way of accepting it and throwing a Tiki party! That's my subjectively objective take on it.
I agree with maybe only half his points, but it's thought-provoking.

These points may seem like nitpicks, and to an extent they are, but I feel like he could have been a bit more nuanced. But overall his analysis of the power of stories is quite compelling, so I *am* sympathetic to his main thesis. It's been a while and I don't quite remember what exactly I disagreed with *that* much.

Totally agreed with the author about analogy of a chimpanzee and himself on a deserted island. But Peter Schiff would not only beat the chimp to emerge as the winner of the survival but he also would go on to build a better life for himself as well as thousands of others on and beyond the island.
The difference is obvious between the author and the guy named Peter.
You’re welcome.
Peter Schiff is a rockin' righteously right on dude...
Absolutely well done.
It's not just peachy-wonderful that humans can organize on large scales. It also brings some pretty horrific problems. When people get into groups of large enough numbers to start abstracting each other, individuals become expendable. Plus, there always ends up being a few at the top with enough power to make them mentally unstable and dangerous.

Perhaps a conversation between Sadhguru and Yuval Noah Harari on humankind would be fantastic!
A well-branded fraud with a cult following and an actual thinker?
Please.
Sadguru and his following are an embarassment to a long illustrious line of Indian philosophers including Shankaracharya, Vivekananda, SreeNarayana Guru, etc.
No, Harari's a vegan and the 'modern day Osho' mocks people like that.

I loved Sapiens and Homo Deus so much that I bought them for my daughter too, then a year later after re-reading them, got all fired up about them again and stupidly bought her the same books again :)

An excellent lecture!
Superb...thanks 😊

Do you mean we are foolish for reading it? Don't want to assume too much based on what you wrote.
Love this book.

Not good.
I promise this is the last one:
The american independence declaration has no sense if we translate it in objective biological terms.
