  • When the Corps of Discovery met the Walla Walla people along the Columbia River, it was the first written record of contact between whites and the tribes of this region. The Corps met them on the way west and stopped again on their return journey. Chief Yellept entreated with Lewis and Clark and invited surrounding tribes for a ceremony to mark the important occasion. Roberta Conner of Tamástslikt Cultural Institute describes this meeting of cultures and explains the Indian perspective of the Corps of Discovery.
