Dude the faded 80s music you put in your videos really puts what these malls used to be like into an almost unimaginable perspective. It’s apocalyptic. A bygone era of retail and life. Crazy…

i went to high school near this mall in the early 2000s. it was THE hang out spot for all the teens, i went there with my friends almost every other weekend. it had everything!
movie, food but also Indoor bungee jump, big carousel, a gift shop with 50 types of cheap shurikens, all blacked out store for just horror movie memorabilia, pet store with colorful fish tanks and huge rabbits, impromptu prom proposals and break ups....it was a place where lives were lived and memories were made. RIP Chesterfield Mall thank you for all the good times.
ps: f the outlet malls especially taubman prestige, what a moronic uninspired dumpster fire

I grew up going here as a kid and teen with friends going to the animal shop calling our moms trying to convince them to buy us puppies, v stock was amazing with posters and slackers.so sad to see Chesterfield mall and mills mall become extinct. I have no desire for outlet malls. I'll forever be grateful for the memories here as kid.

This mall will always hold a special place in my heart. Shopped there in college. After college I had a job working with adults with differing needs and I would take them here to be out and about for the day. Later I would go on my first date with my now husband at the movie theater. That was in 2015 but it feels like forever ago!

22:14 this was Babbage's when I was a boy in the '80s and '90s. I bought Street Fighter II Turbo on SNES there. So many great memories. Those jagged walls were a staple in Babbage's stores back then. They'd line them with the newest and best selling boxed video games. I recall this location had a surprisingly better selection of PC games than other locations, but we didn't own a PC back then. Thanks for the tour, I will miss this mall--like so, so many of our other great, dead malls--so much.

Chesterfield Mall will be demolished starting tomorrow, 10/15/2024. Thank you for creating this overview of the mall. As a child in the 80’s and teen in the 90’s, this mall was a big part of my childhood. I remember the thousands of people walking here on any given weekend or Friday night. Such a beautiful place lost to time.

I remember the fountains! I think there used to be 6-7 of them, but then they removed them one by one. Sad because one of the fountains was tall enough to reach the second floor of the mall. They really fascinated me as a kid, lol.

There were three fountains. Two of similar size in the Sears and Dillard's wings and a much bigger fountain in the center court. The Sears/Dillard's wing fountains were removed in the late 90s/early 2000s and the center court fountain was removed a few years later and replaced with the two-level carousel.

My mom took me to the grand opening of Chesterfield Mall back in the 70s. It was the place kids would hang out during the 80s or least when I was growing up. I never dreamed that they would end up tearing it down. Truly sad.

It's eerie how quiet that abandoned section was! Completely insane. I'm not American, and my country has never had a mall culture like this per se, so watching this feels doubly surreal, knowing all that empty, unused space is just there.

Wow I am so shocked at how Chesterfield is now! Went I first went, every part of the mall was walkable, but I'm sad they walled it off. I am glad to see it being used for new things to keep the mall alive for now though! I also had no idea about the outlets nearby; why would they build them there? I’ve been inside this mall recently. As recently as yesterday, and there is actually a few new stores opened in this mall. There is one restaurant left In the food court which opened roughly a month ago. There is a development group who bought it, who is building a apartments center right behind it, and someone I worked at Home Depot with who also works at the business licensing office for chesterfield said she’s not positive, but heard that the group building the apartments center are the ones who bought the mall. She told me that she heard they are planning on turning it into a shopping center for the people that will live in the apartments once it opens.

It's crazy how quickly this mall died. I was there in 2016 and a lot of the stores were still there. The Carson's and Sears were still in operation. I loved it because it had a v stock that I believe is still there but also a Slackerz and an Arcade. St. Louis Premium Outlets are probably taking all their business, sucks because I'd much rather go to an indoor mall than outdoor mall.

Something has to change, or the economy has to implode. Money doesn't buy nothing anymore. It's been this way for a long while, and it keeps getting worse. U.S. debt of 30.5 Trillion dollars now. $105.000.00 for a pickup truck, and a farm tractor can cost more than a half million dollars? I looked at a small rib roast in a grocery store for $78.00 a week ago. I totally agree with what you've stated here. Even Amazon's share price has fallen more
than 25% ($890.00) over the past six months.

-1913, Creation of the “Private” Federal Reserve.

Indoor malls need to come back because the reason they were so popular was they offered a place to go and hang with friends when the weather was crap somewhere you could go and spend the day playing games in the arcade and then shopping and then eating food in the food court. Outdoor malls are just not the same and the feeling and the energy is just not there and its depressing. I really wanna see a resurgence of indoor malls

I cannot comprehend how such a beautiful architectural piece of art as this mall is, its left to become abandoned. One would think it is the optimal place to go shopping. There has to be a reason for the decline of all these malls. I understand you get better deals online. But nothing can replace the experience of walking around and physically try on clothes and products. I'm from the 80s generation, maybe that's why 😔☹️😩

It was a bummer if you ask me, that it seems like(per one walkthrough video I saw, forget if it was you or someone else who snuck into that place/Powerplex's closed hallways and got kicked out) the skate park didn't stay there, after it was renamed into Powerplex.

BTW, do you really think Dillard's would come back here, if the place was demalled and IF a huge chunk of Chesterfield was demolished? I have my doubt that Dillard's would come back to Chesterfield, but who knows.

I just hear what I hear. TBH, I'll be shocked if anything happens with Chesterfield's redevelopment, let alone Dillard's reopening.
Worst case scenario, we're staring at Jamestown Mall 2.0

This almost looks like the state of Tuttle Mall in Columbus Ohio. Kind of half open with limited stores but very desolate. If you haven't already done that one, it could be one to check out. Also Westland mall in Columbus.

Not being harsh at all.. never saw any point in an outdoor mall and I love the outdoors.
Who wants to tredge across a vast parking lot into an outdoor space dealing with the rain, the cold and the heat and all the elements.
Outdoor malls seem as though they could do better in resort areas with better climates not in the middle of the midwest with four seasons to tend with.

    Westfield Chesterfield 😏
And the city was too bold to have two competing outlet centers let alone open nearly the same time. The taubman one died off (and were supposed to build more of those) as Simon Premium Outlets remained in operation with decent occupancy.

Bells mall was sued by all these people who put malls so close together. Been waiting for this video a long time. the audio is messed up as music is way louder than dialogue. they put a bunch of buildings in front of chesterfield plaza and called that chesterfield mall. everything in Chesterfield has a sign by it saying its the mall. there is a giant parking garage would love see a video about that

I always thought it was weird that this mall and Jamestown even opened. Both were not located in good areas. Jamestown is in the middle of nowhere and chesterfield here is too close to west county too function properly. Plus it’s right on the floodplain of the river.

The location wasn't bad, it just lost business after St. Louis Premium Outlets and Chesterfield Outlets both opened in Chesterfield. The area can't support that much retail.

Well, keep in mind that in 1974 West County Mall was pretty much a glorified strip mall with a roof. I think Penny’s and Famous-Barr were the two anchors. Chesterfield was much larger with more to offer. Man, I still miss Mister Dunderbak’s and their beer cheese soup..

    • @mincerstephen9137

Do you mean West County Center or West County the geographic area? In the 80's and 90's, West County Center was NOT the West County Center of today. It was no competition for Chesterfield Mall. In the 80's and 90's, Chesterfield Mall was a glowing example of American suburban Capitalism. West County the AREA was a perfect place to put this mall when it opened. It was growing and affluent.

Not any really good malls anywhere even the ones that have some stores in them one here in St Louis you have the galleria which is in Brentwood and then they are redeveloping the Union station which is downtown St Louis

West County Center at 270 / Manchester is still doing pretty well (even though now even THAT mall is in the early stage of decline). It's in a very affluent area. 63131 is one of the highest wealth zip codes in the country.

That’s a nice looking mall. Great central ceiling! And no, that outlet place is not a mall. That’s a “shopping center”. Those outdoor things are just trendy and stupid. Who wants to go in and out of weather when there are things called malls? That’s not shopping.
