Oh nice ! I love growing and eating butternut squash.. and your welcome 🌱🙏🏾 enjoy growing them .. My first plan got attacked from vine borers.. I was lucky to get 2 of them ... I just planted a couple more butternut squash plants and running out trellis and space lol
My plant grew 3 main stems, averaging 12’. Had tons of starters, but only yielding 3. I clipped the stems, hundreds of leaves off, yet it didn’t do much. It rained almost every day this summer, had heat and sun, and they still sucked. Had no luck in the boxes for 2 years, so at least I am headed in the right direction
So sorry to hear that ... Couple be the mix weather affect the growing production perhaps... But definitely pruning. Keep up with your fertilizer and I also recommend to increase the calcium it does help out a lot.. Good luck I hope The weather turns around better for you and have a good growing production 🌱🙏🏾

Excellent video, thank you! My butternuts have done the opposite of every video I’ve watched. Mine had only females blooms at first. 😳 The males weren’t blooming. I had lots of male blooms open on my pumpkins, so the bees decided they’d be the surrogate father of my first two butternuts. 😂😎🥳🤣 The male butternut blooms have since caught up, but in reality, the bees are the boss. They go back & forth between the pumpkin and butternut blooms. I have no need to hand pollinate, because the squash bees are incredibly proficient at their job!!! It’s amazing to watch! I won’t know who the father of my butternuts are unless I grow the seeds next season or Maury Povich tells us. 🤣😉😂
Lmao 🤣 that is pretty funny .. But you're right, definitely could cross pollinate butternut squash the most pumpkin and squash plants... The bees are a blessing in the garden always... Thank you so much for sharing this. It was funny and I appreciate the good laugh.. have an awesome day 🌱
I’m so excited to harvest my first season of growing butternut squash. I learned a lot from this video and ty! Homemade butternut bisque is one of my favorites 😋
I am having trouble with all male flowers on my zucchini, pumpkin, patty pan, watermelon and butternut squash. I will try your method to remove every other male. Thanks for the help on picking and curing the butternut squash. I enjoy and learn from your video's.
Sorry to hear you're having a problem but believe it or not it's very common.. Also increase your fertilizer every 2 weeks .. and I am glad you enjoy and learn from my video.. 🙏🏾🌱
Great explanation! Thank you. Do you have experience with blue Hubbard squash? I'm in my first year growing them, and have several at five plus pounds in early July. I've seen where these can grow to twenty or more pounds. When does one know it's harvest time?
Pick them when the outside looks like pale blue-gray , skin should be hard and firm. Your fingernail should not be able to go in that easy , I believe another way if the stem of the fruit should be dried up.. When you harvest these squash I believe you have to cure them. Leave them in the Sun for about 7 days..
I just tasted butternut squash for the first and I ❤ it! Its delicious but cost alot in the store! So...I am growing them right now! I can't wait!! Sell it... cause they are DELICIOUS!😂😂😂
Lol You're absolutely right. They are so expensive. I used to pay a lot of money.. They are the best flavor ever... Thank you so much for sharing and enjoy your growing!
@Greentgarden I baked them and roasted, and when they are roasted, they are naturally sweet! Delicious indeed! They are doing goid. I am also growing watermelon, some yellow Midgets and Sugar Babies. I have been growing Sugar Rush Cantaloupes. I bought from the store and saved the seeds! Have you had Sugar Rushs before? They are super sweet! I've been trying to grow watermelon for going on 3 years, so I'm praying they grow fully this time!!!
@Greentgarden Question...How do you keep the squash bug eggs off? I have been using tape and the so called Captain Jack's dead bug is not working I firgot I have neem oil. I'm gonna try that but what do you use?
Hi @greentgarden I have a serious issue with my squash. As of 1 month ago, I am growing a single butter baby squash variant in a 5 gallon bucket on my outside window terrace. My bucket has good drainage, sits in some wood planks to keep it from the hot metal grates, has new soil, and has been fertilized with organic vegetable fertilizer. The plant gets full sun from roughly 8AM-5PM (about 8-9hrs). I've been watering deeply every other day. I have two successful fruits growing at the bottom of the plant. I have pruned it so that all of the nutrition is going to one single vine. On that vine, for the last two weeks all of the new female flowers/buds have come on strong then yellowed and died. I am getting male flowers coming in every 2-3 days (lots of them). However, I lost about 10-12 female buds in a row and have not been able to produce a 3rd fruit. Please let me know your thoughts on why this may be happening and if I can do anything to help the plant.
I am very sorry to hear that you sound like you got everything about right.. The only thing I would think about is the calcium. Believe it or not the plant is lack of calcium It could cause the fruit to turn yellow before opening.... The other thing is just watering .. And if the temperature is way too hot sometimes it could stress the plant out And this is the other reason why You're having this problem.. . I would say increase your calcium a bit and try to control the water and hopefully the weather gets better. Give it some time it should get better 🙏🏾🌱
Thank you very much for sharing great tips. My first time growing butternut squash and I am excited to harvest them. I have a small garden. I will prune some male flowers as advised. Can I also prone leaves? if so can I cut any? or cut specific ones? Thank you for your tips again!
Your very welcome and yes pruning does help a lot , It helps with a better airflow and production .... I always remove 3-4 leaves at the beginning of the plant ( root area) and sometimes I remove 1-2 side shoots , which is known as the runners... Make sure to add fertilizer every two weeks because this is a heavy feeding plant.. You will get a better production
You could use straw but don't put too much , squash vine borers normally go after your squash, zucchini and pumpkin plant.. butternut squash is on the low percentage but they could still get them..
We grow Butternut Squash and Sugar Baby Pumpkins every year. The bonus in planting these 2 varieties is you can save, and roast the seeds for snacking on. Also, they're both heirloom plants, meaning you can dry and save the seeds for planting next year. If saving seeds to plant, always save from the biggest and ripest gourds. Doesn't hurt to test plant a few in doors next spring to test germination. If they do germinate and you time it right when it's time for planting, you're good to go to transplant. TYFS
You helped this first time gardener a lot. I was able to get fruit but the butternut squash seems to stop growing at 4-5” in length. It’s still in the 90s and the plant endured a hot summer since July. The vines are picked clean of leaves half way up and vines are grey/dry in areas. I have been self pollinating. Are they slow growers? They are already tan in color and not sure if too soon to pick that small
Sorry to hear that but with a 90° that's too hot for butternut squash. So the stress on the plant level it's a bit higher and could cause your fruit to stun the growth .. Unfortunately, it might not keep growing. Once it start getting the tan color it means it's begin. It's ripening process. Normally this happen when you reach it full size but due to the weather this could cost a problem.. Soon as the weather drops a bit in the '70s to '80s you're going to get a better growing production. Overall. Just keep up with your fertilizer in the water in... Have a wonderful week ahead... happy gardening 🌱
Don't go with the stem .. when the squash gets a tan color ,and If you try to press your thumbnail inside it will be very hard.. that's when to harvest.. also leave on your countertop for 5 to 7 days for it to cure better taste
I have two butterscotch butternut plants. One plant has stunted growth with few flowers and only two squash. I have a second plant (same variety) that produced seven squash and is twice the size. Any ideas on what happened? I have hundreds of bees all season due to a catmint patch close to the garden.
Sorry to hear that.. my guess is the plant is under stress ... Try to boost up that one plant may increase the fertilizer and calcium.. Also make sure to water on time and maybe give it a light pruning. It will help..
@@Greentgarden Thanks for the tips. Watering has been done by my brother and I don't like how he does it. It could be part of the problem since he doesn't keep a schedule. The plant is so small there's not much to prune. My guess is watering and intense early heat. I recommend the Butterscotch squash, it's a mini variety. I had one plant last year with 8 fruit and they were the best I've ever tasted!
Oh nice..thank you I recommended that I did taste one before. They're very delicious.. And if the plant is small, definitely call back on the pruning but I'm pretty sure you're right with the watering... A simple stuff like fertilizer and water makes a big difference in our garden.... Thank you so much for sharing with us. I really do appreciate it. I hope everything goes great. Keep us posted. Have a wonderful day
So when it comes to pumpkin it all depends on the variety. Some of them change colors. Some of them are big but the one thing you have to look for is When the rind is hard and doesn't dent when you press your fingernail into it .. Also when the stream next to the pumpkin head turns dry up ...
Sorry just a quick question.. I have to 2 small green butternuts growing.. Shall I put them by the window or leave them outside as the weather is cold now.
If it's too cold it's not going to grow and if it gets in the 30s will damaged the squash.. If you harvest and it's small, it would not continue to grow. If it reached the full size you could place it by the window. It will ripen.. Do not throw away the green small squash. You could still eat them. They're very soft
I live in RI. I have not tried butternut squash but I will next year. I won’t have enough of a growing season this year. I grew pumpkins but only got ONE. It looks like it could be ready to pick but what should I look for?
Oh sorry to hear , Try prune your pumpkin plant and increase the fertilizer.. Also depends on the type of pumpkin you're growing .. once you see your pumpkin stop growing, reach its size, it's hard and most pumpkins will turn a full orange ... .. 🙏🏾🌱
@Greentgarden Yeah they help alot! I just let them have that area! 🥰 I try to keep water in the handles cause it's been hot and they drink the water, which is adorable, but only until they finish drinking!!!🤣😅😂
Nice ! Yes you could grow butternut squash indoors. Just have to make sure you have enough of a bigger container , good lights and space cuz they do run..
Sorry I hear that , it could be a fungal disease .. maybe the plant has powdery mildew , mix some baking soda with hydro peroxide and water in a spray bottle.. spray on the leaves in evening time.. If the brow spot turns black I would cut that part out and eat the good part ..
I haven’t tried growing those. I’d have to grow in a grow bag. I don’t think a 5 gallon bucket is possible? Idk….but I’ll research and try next year. I do have 20 pound grow bags and I’m sure those would be perfect. I’ll find out..😄
I would say at least 7 gallon containers and up for these butternut squash... You should definitely grow them. You could also grow them vertically running upward to save space 🙏🏾🌱 .
From Eden Brothers I bought a packet of seeds of Waltham Butternut Squash. I do only container planting, and a Walmart bought an oval metal container with handles(waaay cheaper in price than at garden centers, and with a nail and hammer made holes in the bottom). I planted my butternut squash in that and added supports for the vines. They have done very well by follow tips from Green T Garden. They are now in the stage of starting to lighten but not yet beige. 5 so far but more starters coming. I am in Zone 10 in Southern California.
Mid-October should be respectable in most zones to harvest butternuts, I think? Stems on mine don’t seem to want to dry up, shrivel and turn brown. The rind is tan and nail-resistant too… I cautiously cut one and the one-inch stem leaked a few drops of water… 🤔
So basically the plant is slowly fully ripen up the butternut squash that's already thrown 10. What you could do is cut an inch above the tan butternut squash and leave it by your window or outside for about 2 weeks out. It will rip and cure perfectly... With the weather changing or even insects attacking the plant, it will stress out the plant and basically slow down the production
I’ve been growing butternut for the first time, and I’ve noticed all the leaves on the vine are dying . There are a few butternuts still growing but are not ready to be picked yet..Must I just leave them as they are?
Sorry to hear , are the leaves dying because the weather is too cold ? Sometimes check for squash bugs. They love butternut squash leaves... So if all the leaves are dying and the plant looks like it's going to die, you might just have to harvest the butternut squash and leave it by your window or countertop... If they're small, you could still eat them, but they would not have the same taste as when they're fully ripen..
Thank you.. yes the weather has turned cold now. There are no bugs on the squashes ( not that I can see anyway) The Butternuts are quite big in size ( 1 which is golden and about 4 which are still green) Should I pick them all and leave them by my window? Really don’t want them to spoil.
Yes absolutely the window corner is perfect to get some sunlight for them. They will continue ripening.. very sorry for the late response.. I just saw this.. it might take up too 2weeks sometimes.. ripen and cure
Oh sorry , if it's full size and starting to change color then it should be good... Just put it on countertop for a week or two.. If it's not full size, it wouldn't get ripening properly
So the male flower has a skinny stem with a flower at the end , the female is much thicker and shaped as a small green fruit with spots of white on it.. I will try to do a short video on this soon 🙏🏾🌱
Your welcome and it's good to know .. especially if you have no bees and your fruit to turn yellow and fall off, it's a good sign you need to hand pollinate.. I did a short video on this this morning 🌱🙏🏾

Hi @greentgarden I have a serious issue with my squash. As of 1 month ago, I am growing a single butter baby squash variant in a 5 gallon bucket on my outside window terrace.

Is it okay if the stem is not completely dry? The other 2 criteria - fingernail test and nutty color are met. Thanks.
Yes, you could pick them before the stem is fully dry.. Just make sure to cure at least 7 to 14 days that will do the job..

Your welcome.. happy gardening 🌱
Thank you for your advice.. Really Appreciated.

Yours are on the grass I see, so any bugs trouble them on the ground? Or pests??
Yea I ran out of space in the garden lol so I just let it grow over , it's later summer here so not many bugs or pests around this time
@@Greentgarden good to know boss. 👍🏿

What if the stem breaks off?
Oh sorry , if it's full size and starting to change color then it should be good... Just put it on countertop for a week or two..
If it's not full size, it wouldn't get ripening properly
@@Greentgarden thank you!!!
Your welcome... Have a wonderful day 🌱
picked 6 today, 5 were white and 1 was dark green. Plants had already died, two of them were just lying around without any connection.
Oh no .. I am sorry.. 😔
🙏🏾🌱. .. Do you still have time to plant more??
I pollinate the female flowers with a male flower and q-tip. I then batter and fry all my male flowers. Yum
Nice .. In your right hand pollinated is pretty good and it's a safe way if you don't have 🐝...
Thanks for sharing.. happy gardening 🌱
How do you know if a flower is male or female?
Here is a quick short video for this

My are golden but my nail still goes into it
It still needs to get ripped up and harder... Give it a couple more days..
👍

Can you cure them in a dark cool basement?
So it does require some light either from a light bulb or from the window corner and good air flow around it..
But how do you know whats a male vs female flower?
So the male flower has a skinny stem with a flower at the end , the female is much thicker and shaped as a small green fruit with spots of white on it.. I will try to do a short video on this soon 🙏🏾🌱
Thank you! Who knew? I grow these every year and bumper crops abound. I wonder how much more could come from selecting them as you shared.
Your welcome and it's good to know .. especially if you have no bees and your fruit to turn yellow and fall off, it's a good sign you need to hand pollinate.. I did a short video on this this morning 🌱🙏🏾
You're awesome, tysm!

When the stem is green the plant is still sending nutrients to the squash. When brown its done and ripe. Is this amature hour???
How do we know difference between male and female flowers?
Got a good video on that
