He was not proving anyone wrong. Respecting the food, regardless of taste, is a part of Hindu and Buddhist culture. The chef did not say that it tasted bad. He told Gordon that it was not tasting like authentic Pad Thai. But, well, Gordon Ramsay is not world-famous for his humility lol.

There's a Thai saying " do not ask a monk about the offering"
It means when you give somethings to someone that graciously receives it, do not bother asking him/her"
The monks are in training to let go of worldly tatters, so they cannot complain if the food is not to their liking.

Gordon, you have to know one thing. A Buddhist monk can only say he enjoys whatever offered. It is what all Buddhists know. A Buddhist monk cannot complain for anything offered whatever they are, however they are. Enjoying tasting things are wrong for being a monk. Food is for surviving, not for joys.

Just seeing the reaction of the Thai chef though made it seem like there’s some work to be done to make it closer to the original. I think he should try and take some advice from the chef and if does not agree or think it fits in his dish he can just continue to do it his own way. I think that the same way other chefs learn from Gordon he is still able to to learn from others. If I knew my pizza tasted good but some guy from Italy said that’s not real pizza I would ask him to explain how and why and ask for some advice. No. When you've dedicated every ounce of your being to your trade, which in the case of culinary arts also means dedicating yourself to the culture that surrounds and gives birth to the food, you want to know that you've done a good job. And for the record, Gordon is one of the most humble men out there. He's not humble with people on his shows because he's either 1)trying to correct the mistakes in a failing business to lead them to success or 2) trying to correct the mistakes in a chefs cooking or service to.. lead them to success. But when it comes to learning ones culture and culinary arts he is incredibly humble and a great listener. There's a reason those who have trained him all say the same damn thing.

Although during the ritual itself maybe serious, but what Ramsey did was ask the monks after it all had finished. I'm assuming this because they were in front of the head monk (?), which many people go up to him to greet him and talk. So, honestly, I think Ramsey was actually being pretty respectful. He accepted the culture and behaved the way the others did, or at least with someone who knows what they are doing.

If the world was how you see it, there would be no innovation at all. In fact pad thai itself was only invented in the 1930s as part of that same process of innovation. So it seems a bit silly to criticise him as being disrespectful for not making the same way, when the dish wouldn't exist at all if everybody thought that way.

Forbidden to cook... Forbidden to talk to while eating... Sounds like the perfect excuse to join this religion -.- "Oh I'm not allowed to cook. YOU have to cook for me, and shut the fuck up while you're doing it!" Awesome...

In fact, you can talk to them. They can be flexible for that. It just they shouldnt talk while eating bcs it doesnt look polite/neat/calm. But if someone want to talk to them, its ok. They are forbidden to cook, yes, but they are forbidden to ask for food too. They have to be simple like.. any food you give even it mix with other or look uneatable, they should be able to eat. Bcs those are food, good taste is not the key, eat only for living. If no food is given, no eat too. Just some training for not greedy. Some monk live and meditiate in a forest among wild life, they will be more calm and peace in place like that.
Moreover, what you said and know are just some little parts of the religion and got mistake in the key purpose of the behavior. Would be good if you have chance to share opinion with the real (who meditate a lot and calm and not greedy, no anger, peace..etc. which really real) monk, he would give some peace opinion about living for u, just .. if you want to open mind and understand the purpose of what you dont really know about. ;)

Celibacy... Living in an isolated monastery... Slowly reducing food portions till you starve to death (to attain Nirvana)... Eating one meal, and only one meal, a day... Forcing yourself to avoid most/all forms of emotion... Remaining calm at all times... Training yourself to ignore pain... Training yourself to ignore luxuries... Sounds like the perfect excuse for you to stfu and learn a bit more about the religion (and its culture that ties in). Note: I'm not Buddhist.

Gordon's Pad Thai looks nice to me. FYI about offering food to Buddhist monk, actually monks will never complain about food that has been offered. Monks eat food only to survive not for its taste and be thankful for those who offer. In Thailand, many cannot offer restaurant food, so they offer as simple as just boiled rice. But they will freshly cook rice and will not eat the rice before giving to monks. So, the basic of offering is goodwill and right intention of people who offer.
