Whatever happened to rubber cement? Haven't done leather craft for a long time, but rubber cement was the go to glue for lining and stitching back then.
I'd love to see a holster making video that also discussed the merits of lining holsters with suedes vs. Veg tan(cementing two pieces' flesh sides. I had one employee at my local Tandy advise to be careful with suedes as the chrome salts, used in the chrome tanning process, react with water(sweat, rain, etc.) and you get acid. Acid that eats gun finishes
Thank you for sending in your tip! We will absolutely have a video on a gun holster, and I always line so we’ll make sure we get that in there. I line with a veg-tan kipskin and love it. Yes, the chromium salts in a “chrome-tan” will tarnish metal so a veg-tan is always best. We’re waiting on a new chisel for hand sewing, and once we get that in, the project videos will take a major step up, including holsters. Thanks again for the comment! Love these videos! Had a quick question regarding oil based dyes and acrylic paints, while I love the richer color the oil based dyes give I've found that I experience a lot of bleed through even when I let the dye completely dry before it is set, any suggestions?
Thanks so much for all the videos, Chuck. I'm wanting to use a suede liner in a laptop sleeve. What is the risk of the suede bleeding and damaging the laptop cover? Are there any preventative steps we can take to minimize the risk?
Gwynne, Thanks for asking, and thank you for the comments! If you’re using a suede, just lay the face leather on the backing leather and press down. This will leave the pattern of the cutouts in the suede. If you’re using some other type of leather as a backing, trace the cutout pattern onto the backing leather with an awl (try and keep the awl mark as close to the edge of the cutouts as possible and, when glued, it won’t be noticeable). Brush in the glue only to the areas between the cutout openings on the backing and, on the face leather, it’s easy enough to go right to the edge. When laying the face leather onto the backing leather just be careful to line up the cutouts and edges and you should have a good bond. I hope this helps!
Could you possibly do a video showing this? I'm thinking this would be a pain to do since you don't have much if any room for error in the gluing so would like to see it done before I make an attempt at it myself.
Would it be possible to line a straight razor/wet shave kit roll with a silk handkerchief? I'm worried about my glue bleeding through my silk. Would a spray adhesive work as an alternative?
Tawnya, thanks for asking. The sporran is sewn with the gussets bowing to the outside instead of the inside. Your edges will come together just like normal, but, they will overlap instead of coming together side by side. You’ll have to sew with one hand on the inside of the pouch, but other than that, same gusset length, same holes, same everything. This is so easy to do and so hard to describe! Let me know if this helps, and if not, I’ll send a pic.

I bought a vegtan 3/4 oz it's a little thin for making purses. What kind of lining would be good to make it a little stiffer but still lightweight? Will this affect the burnishing process
I would say go with the 3/4 oz. veg-tan you already have as a liner. That will give it some good body without going too heavy and it will burnish nicely. If that, in your opinion, sounds like it would be a bit too heavy I would suggest backing down to a 2/3 oz. veg or chrome as the liner and the edges will still burnish (not as well as two veg back to back but pretty good).
Hi chuck, what man made lining is good for bracelet? I bought minnetonka suede bracelet and it has man made lining which they didn't specify. I want to make that project. Thank you
Hi Susan, I am not sure about this, you may be able to contact Minnetonka and see what material it is or search online for a synthetic leather or vegan leather. Unfortunately, we don't carry this and I haven't worked with it so I can't recommend a specific product.
Question: When you use a paint roller to roll on glue over a large surface, do you throw away the roller afterwards or do you clean it? I'm assuming you throw it away....?
Ann, thanks for sending in a question. I hate to use a roller brush for one project and then throw it away, but you can really only keep it if you have another project coming up in the near future. You can wrap the roller in plastic wrap or a baggie and tape it closed. This will keep if for a short amount of time.
@@WeaverLeatherSupply The nap on the roller you show is quite thick, wouldn't a low nap synthetic roller be best. Usually sold for smooth paint surfaces. I suppose it depends on how rough the raw face of the leathers are that you are gluing.

It’s one of my favorite decorations because you can manipulate it to go around corners, and it can be braided in a number of hour glass shapes, ovals and beautiful tapers. Hi Mackenzie, If you are using the daubers to glue, you will not be able to reuse them because the glue will harden the dauber. If you are dyeing leather, you can wash the dauber, dry it and store it in a plastic bag or container but make sure you mark which color dye it was used on because you will still get rub-off even after washing the dauber and you don't want to mix colors by accident.
