This film segment shows Pickett's charge. Who actually led the troops and made it to the Union Lines? Armistead not Pickett. Pickett was far back of the lines, (as he was nowhere to be seen), Armistead was the man who finally made the last charge. And it should NOT be Pickett's charge, BUT Armistead's charge.

the Condewferacy should hae fought a defensive war. Threw themselves into one fishhook after another. But with all the immigration into New York and northern industry,, they would have lost that one, too.
The South had better field leadership and the ranks could shoot somewhat better on average, they lacked industrial base and population! The North had the population, industrial base and in time decent field leadership and the will to fight a war of attrition. That pretty much sizes up the Civil War in a sentence or two. The period did produce some of the best songs thou, hell of a price to pay but it sure did!

Tell me if they Yankees were fightin to "free the slaves" why did they have 4 slave state in their Union (Kentucky, Maryland, Delaware, and Missouri) and added a 5th one (west virginia) in 1863 AFTER the so called Emancipation Proclamation that freed not one single slave.
Tell me why then did the North offer the south slavery permanently (the Corwin Amendment) in March of 1861 and kept the offer up to the day Lee Surrendered. Tell me why it took 2 years of war and the desperation of a possible loss for Lincoln to give the EP, and why did he actually rescind the Emancipation orders in Missouri for the first two years of war.
Tell me why if the North fought against slavery why they didn't officially arm blacks until 3 years after the start of the war, or why Lincoln in his first Inaugural Address he said he had no lawful right to end slavery nor any inclination to do so.
or why Lincoln wanted to deport all blacks back to africa or to south america. If lincoln loved the blacks so much he started a war to free them why did he want the new territories out west to be for the white man only and called negroes an inferior race?

My ancestors (Choctaw) on my mother's side were force marched at gun point off their lands at the end of the war and "resettled" in the Oklahoma Territory where my great-grandfather was later born. This by the same "government" you seem to think had a noble cause. Sherman and his march to the sea scorched earth policy was the cause of any food shortages, not the people in the South.

Free black men in the antebellum south had just as many rights as white people, and 65,000 free black men fought for the south. Yes slavery was very bad, but only 3% of southerners owned slaves, and only the top 1% had the giant plantations. There were abolitionists who were on the side of the confederacy because they believed in state's rights, but they were still trying to abolish slavery

MO originally voted against secession but after the St Louis Massacre the legitimate government voted for secession and reorganized the militia as the Home Guards ordered Price to take MO for the Confederacy.
