The simplest testing of a gold bar that is suspected counterfeit (eg gold-cladded tungsten) would be: drill small hole, analyze collected drillings. This will indicate if interior is different material. You would know very quickly - without even the need for analysis, if the interior of the bar is tungsten. Gold is very soft and easy to drill, tungsten is extremely hard and difficult to drill through. The bit would quickly penetrate the gold layer and stop cold when it hits the tungsten.

Regarding the test stand, yes, it is included with the purchase of the analyzer as a part of the standard package. If you would be using this analyzer in a retail environment, you may also want to have a look at our Niton DXL desktop precious metal analyzer (see youtube video)

The Niton XL2 will provide the composition and gold karat value for any type of sample, including gold bar. It is, however, a surface measurement, so will not provide any information about what is in the center. To get an accurate measurement of the entire bar, one would drill a small hole entirely through the bar, collect the drillings and use the analyzer to test the drillings. This will give an indication as to whether the interior composition is the same as the surface composition.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Is there tech out there that can detect thick layers or is that tech too far into the future at the moment? I have a feeling our future will be dealing more directly with gold and less with notes as money.
Small metallic items would work great for this, but inevitably large purchases or transfers will require bars. Thanks for whatever info you have. I found this video really interesting!

For the most part, yes AuDIT technology will detect gold plated tungsten. However, if you are referring to the recent scandal in NYC where gold bars were found to have tungsten slugs imbedded within, AuDIT will not be able to detect these frauds. The gold layer is much too thick for XRF to penetrate the surface and see the tungsten embedded inside.

    How much are they?

The sample does not need to be flat; shape of the sample does not matter - it can easily be used to test chains, links etc. The penetration depth through gold plate is about 8 - 10 microns. Typical decorative gold plating is less than 3 microns. The only items that create issues for AuDIT are items that are cladded or “Gold filled” as these are not actually plated materials, but are cladded with a relatively thick layer of gold.

Hello. We bought a Niton XL2 for our business a few months ago but it looks like we don't have the audit technology. Is it possible to have it just by updating the software?

“Mr. Kirsch, Thank you for your comments and your interest in our latest products. The answer depends on the version of operating system software you are running. If you are running version 8.0A or later on your analyzer, then we can do the upgrade in the field via email FREE OF CHARGE.”.
If you have an analyzer running an older version than this e.g. 7.X, we will arrange for your analyzer to be returned to the factory for the upgrade....continued

Hi, I am kelvin from malaysia.May I know how fast the device to use for auditing plated gold. The detection device only able to detect if the surface is flatten? How about like those gold necklace and jewellery.it have variety of shape.would it hardly to detect? Since you said it cant penetrate too thick plated gold, may I know how many mm or lesser can it penetrate thru.we are doing pawn shop business.nowadays too much counterfeited gold. Thanks

Hi I would like to know if this product can also determine the gold classification i.e. to 10k,18, 21k etc.? thanks!

Hi Mark-- Yes. In addition to determining if a gold piece is plated, and the alloy composition (up-to 22 elements reported), these instruments also will tell you the Karat value. The gold karat value is a measure for the gold purity. As an example, 24-karat ring is made out of pure gold, an 18-karat ring is 75% pure gold (18/24). Take a look at this page for a screen shot and some additional videos:
