    Very cool video. As a combat army veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, I have used grenades before. We knew about the timing system after you pulled the pin, but no one ever really explained exactly how it all came together to cause the explosion. The very first thing that surprised me about the hand grenade was how heavy it was.

      Yeah, but this particular type of fuze is prone to damage, making them MUCH less reliable or safe than the western style.
      Also the stick grenades were pretty safe, as long as the user wasn't a complete idiot. If anything, they're safe due to the extended range they had. It was the WW1 stick grenades that tended to get their cord snagged and activating them. That was fixed before the second one.
      Cold war era *Soviet* stick grenades were notoriously iffy, though.
      EVERYBODY hated those. Nobody ever knew when they'd go off AND the base cap had to be glued on if you didn't want a surprise explosion while on march

    Seriously one of the coolest videos I’ve come across on here. The other videos that explain this with animations left me with some questions but I really got it with this one. I can’t imagine how long it took to make all these different models, but know it’s appreciated.

  • @mnpd3

    Notching the outside of the grenade body has no effect on fragmentation. Weapon designers learned that long after the fact, and began notching the INSIDE of grenade bodies, or using an inner-notched sleeve or spring. Notched fragmentation works because of the shaped/hollow charge effect, which only occurs if the notching faces the explosive filler.

    • @nicholashodges201
      @nicholashodges201 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      The notches on the US "pineapple grenade" were *never* about fragmentation. They were there for grip. They were removed because they messed with fragmentation.
      And pressed sheet metal was infinitely cheaper than cast steel

    When I was a kid deactivated hand grenades were readily available with the firing mechanism burned but still complete. They had a spring loaded firing pin that pivoted when the safety handle was released. It struck a primer, much like a centerfire rifle primer. The primer ignited a chemical fuse; no match or hobby shop igniter fuse was involved but the concept is similar.

    • @nicholashodges201
      @nicholashodges201 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      He based this on the style of fuze the Russians use. It's much cheaper & easier to make, but since it's striker sticks up so far it's prone to damage.
      I much prefer the western style.
      Sure it costs a little more but you don't have to worry about breaking the striker.

      This is not an actual F-1, it is a functional reconstruction. The charge and detonator in this model is all made of matchheads, the actual F-1 is filled with 60 grams of TNT, a grey clay-like substance and there is no match cord, the detonator is a pyrotechnic substance of varying composition to control detonation delay. The red army used it since during WW2 and it is long replaced by better models, however like much abandoned soviet wargear a *lot* of it is still being used by south african/american armies and warbands.

    Problem w granacie na filmiku jest taki, że ten lont w zapalniku który jest odpalany od góry i spala się powowli w dół aż do ładunku jest luźny tzn. jest wsadzony w luźną rurkę i nawet na filmiku widać, że dym i inne produkty spalania są na dole kontrukcji (w materiale wybuchowym, w tym przypadku zapałach) szybciej, niż ogień lontu. Na filmiku granat jest otwarty i nie ma w nim ciśnienia. W zamkniętym granacie jak ten lont zacznie się palić, to przez górną dziurkę, o ile w ogóle taka tam jest, bo chyba nawet nie ma, spaliny nie mają jak uciekać, powodują wzrost ciśnienia i bardzo, bardzo szybko rozgrzane spaliny powędrują do materiału wybuchowego (no normalnie to jest jeszcze materiał inicjujący bo materiał wybuchowy nie koniecznie zdetonuje od samego ognia czy iskier). Iskry, gorący dym podpalą te zapałki dużo szybciej, niż dojdzie tam lont. Można zostawić z 15cm lontu, a wybuch może być już po 3.
    taki lont w rurce najlepiej zalać klejem na gorąco. Twórcy komercyjnych pterad uszczelaniją to trocinami z gipsem.

    If oxygen is needed to burn the fuse, wouldn’t the grenade malfunction in water?

    • @hanc37
      @hanc37 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      How does a closed cased 30-06 rifle cartridge burn without oxygen to burn? Nitrocellulose has gobs of oxygen bound to nitrogen in each molecule. It does not require additional oxygen to burn. Same with the fuse and percussion cap.
