    I really admire you because you have a go at anything and never let anything get the better of you, that’s real inspirational in my book. Top job Del!.

      Thank mate, ever thought of it like that, sometimes it feels greedy wanting to do everything and have a go at things when they're usually the reserve of talented craftsmen, but when companies make amateur focused tools we can buy for affordable money, then why not humbly have a go and see how you get on?!

    Good first effort, Should be proud of that. I have a very very small amount of experience using a full size English Wheel, and know how much of a black art it can be! I once watched one of the older mechanics at the garage I did my apprenticeship at in the 80's build a set of MG TA front and rear wheelarch/fenders from scratch out of sheet steel - took him about 3 weeks solid but by christ they were spectacular. Awesome.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow that sounds like an awesome project and the MGA has some stunning body lines for sure! Sounds like he was a proper craftsman... sad if we let these skills die out, so it's important to try aye?

  • @americanotakuinc.9637

    Something to help you save some time on the next run. Bend the sheet metal at the outset over the top of your leg. It’ll put an initial bend in the metal without having to spend so much time hammering it out. Billy Lane, the legendary bike builder and owner of Choppers Inc. in Florida, used to do that all the time to quicken up the process. If you try it just be aware of how hard you push down to put in an initial curve. It’s easy to accidentally over-bend it.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for that, of course that makes sense, im back in the garage tomorrow working on the next attempt.. and ill do just that.. have a great weekend buddy, and thanks for your support... Del.

      Sure thing, Del. Anytime. That’s what is so great about our community. We lean on each other and learn from one another and are never greedy about keeping knowledge for just ourselves.

    When I saw the rough sheet of aluminium and it had been hammered I thought well that's going to end up in the bin. Stunned by the end result Del. Very very impressed. Fair play. Nice work.

      Thank you Michael, the wheel is the magic tool in this case, it's astonishing how it can iron out all those dents in a few dozen strokes back and forth... and then you can start the finer shaping from there!... it's hugely rewarding and real good fun!

    Brilliant channel. The sheer amount of skills I have learned from Del, Martin ( Retrorestore) & James ( Savage Garage) have not only saved me a clean fortune but far more importantly have given me immense personal satisfaction and pride in completing a task I would previous not have had the skills nor ability to do myself. While I appreciate many viewers on this and the other channels are very competent and skilled with the spanners, equally as many of us aren’t. And it’s thanks to the likes of Del, Martin,James & the many other channels like SMA & Mustie 1 that my skilll and confidence is continually increasing. Sos huge thank you to you Del for taking the time to make these videos- greatly appreciated ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

    Del, I admire a lot of what you do. From my limited perspective you seem to be progressing nicely at fender banging and wheeling. And I'm impressed with your freehand pen skills.
    I had my doubts at the start though as the fender took shape I could see my skepticism was unfounded. The folded edge was a nice touch too... for a first attempt you have done yourself proud.

    That was a very impressive demo, Del, made even more so given that it was your first attempt. I was amazed that you could convert a sheet of bus scrap into an object of 3-dimensional beauty. The next attempt's going to make good viewing, I'll bet. Cheers! 👍

    EDIT: There's fascinating armourers showing their work shaping metal into the most impossible shapes here on youtube - Greenleaf Workshop and Eric Dube come to mind, maybe they're worth a look if you haven't yet.

    Ref your reply to my comment on your last video, I am not laughing Del, I am impressed. I wish my first wheeling job was as good as your result. I have always felt that wheeling is more of an art than a science, closer to sculpting than sheet metal working, you obviously have an artistic streak.Wheeling is all about practice, practice, practice then more practice.It doesn't matter how much instruction you can get, nothing prepares you for actually doing it as it is so intuitive. Trust your intuition on what went wrong. Best of luck Del.

    For years ive watched the likes of Roy Schmidt from American Hotrod and Rick Petko from OCC / American Chopper take narley pieces of sheet steel, pound the sh*t out of them, bend and shape them on English Wheels to make the most amazing fenders, bonnet lids, boot lids, gas tanks etc and i am amazed at the patience and skills they both have to do this kind of traditional fabrication by eye and get it cock on, i dabbled many years ago with lead loading and a bit of panel fabrication when i restored my 1966 MGB Roadster and the hours and hours it takes to get there is unreal so i know the time and effort you put into that fender, but what you did in 7 hours mate is cock on, well done, another skill set or `String to your Bow` as me old Dad would say, might be an idea to invest in a metal shrinker / stretcher in the future it`ll save the metal bunching up and creasing on ya i think, cracking video mate and best of luck. In the words of Roy Schmidt "Okay Sweetheart, I still love you,,,even though you talking Dirty to me". Adios.
