  • A fan-edit of Prehistoric Planet, and a homage to the final episode of the 1999 documentary series Walking With Dinosaurs. The episode is titled 'Death of a Dynasty'.
    An updated and extended version is now available here:
    • Walking With Dinosaurs...
    As of writing this description, Walking With Dinosaurs is nearly 25 years old, and so some of the information provided by the narrator is either outdated or wrong. I have provided an example below, but I would highly recommend also watching Ben G Thomas accuracy review in the link below:
    • The Scientific Accurac...
    The ecosystem of 'Death of a Dynasty' is primarly based of the Hell Creek Formation in the upper plains of the USA. This ancient habitat was not a volcanic ash wilderness, but a lush wetland. In fact, the planet itself didn't experience a 'massive surge in volcanic activity across the globe' at this time. There was a massive flood basalt, or 'large igneous province' in India 66 million years ago (the deccan traps), which may or may not have contributed to the dinosaur extinction event by releasing greenhouse gases and altering the climate. However, dinosaur and pterosaur fossils are abundant right up until the so called 'K-Pg boundary': a sharp geological line of iridium debrie - marking the impact of a large asteroid (not a comet as mentioned by the narrator) and the end of the age of dinosaurs. Most paleontologists would agree that the climatic after effects of this impact was the primary killer. The Hell Creek Formation is one of the best places in the world to study this mass extinction event.
    Also, pterosaurs were not in decline and/or outcompeted into extinction by birds.
    To learn more about the Hell Creek biota:
    Listen to Episode 127 - The Hell Creek Formation, of the Common Descent Podcast;
    commondescentpodcast.com/2021...
    Or read Saurian - A Field Guide to Hell Creek, a very accessible book by Tom Parker.
    Or just dive into the wikipedia page, here:

    Chapters:
    0:00 Intro
    0:30 Didelphodon & opening titles
    1:33 The cretaceous period
    2:58 Flowering plants
    3:58 Predator and prey
    5:22 Triceratops lock horns
    6:52 T. rex courtship
    8:27 Edmontosaurus & Didelphodon
    9:29 The T. rex nest
    10:46 Quetzalcoatlus
    11:55 T. rex mother & chicks
    13:04 Extinction of the dinosaurs
    14:45 The age of mammals and birds
    This video is remixed art, created for educational purposes. I am the creator of this video, but I do not own the original source material.
    The imagery used to create this edit was recorded from the Apple TV Plus series 'Prehistoric Planet', which you can watch here:
    tv.apple.com/se/show/prehisto...
    The narration (Kenneth Branagh) and music (Ben Bartlett) was sampled from the original Walking With Dinosaurs, which is available on DVD.

Of course we know that much of the information is inaccurate because we've come a long way since then, it is still an awesome video. The Styginetta is one of the few birds that are known to have survived the extinction event. The descendants of that bird are the ducks and geese that we live with today. We know the impact happened in Spring due to fish fossils having gills filled with debris from the impact. Also a Thescelosaurus leg has been found with a turtle impaled by a stick, a Pterosaur egg, and small mammals in a burrow. A nice remake of a classic series.

    Although WWD is a victim of it's time, I never understood why they portrayed late Cretaceous North America as a barren, volcanic, hell-scape and said the Dinosaurs were already of the verge of extinction before the asteroid hit. Even at the time palaeontologists knew that wasn't true. All the evidence showed that the area where the episode was set (Hell Creek formation) was made up of lush forests, rivers and swamps. The non avian dinosaurs and Pterosaurs were thriving until the asteroid impact.

      @PaleoEdits  ปีที่แล้ว

      I never understood it either. Maybe they tried to connect to the deccan trap theory of the extinction and extrapolated it 'across the world'. I don't know. I made a comment about it in the description.

      @@PaleoEdits Maybe. Although I love WWD, the last episode was my least favourite, even when watching it as a child. The story itself was very harrowing, it was by far the least believable.

    it's so interesting comparing the nostalgia of the now very outdated walking with dinosaurs with the newer more up to date (but of course not perfect) Prehistoric Planet. I love both series so much and many others so this is really fun to watch. I almost wonder if they should've put 65 mya just for the sake of what they were going for but I know the 66 was a reference to Prehistoric Planet.

      By they you mean me? This edit was a solo project. But anyways yes, while I wanted to keep the old story intact (with the volcanism and all that) I took liberty to add some accuracy where ever possible. I also put 'Earth' instead of Montana so the isisaurus don't seem completely out of place. One could also relate the volcanism to the deccan instead of hell creek I guess.

    First off: this was incredible and added back some of the sombre mystery that WWD had that PP kinda missed imo. This was easily the best fan edit I've ever seen.
    Second: how the hell did i never realize these were narrated by Kenneth Brenaugh

    I really miss this show it was an awesome program even though there have been a lot of new dinosaurs over the years since Walking With Dinosaurs first aired on t.v. and it would be really neat if this show was brought back only updated with the newest dinosaur discoveries like scientists now know that Tyrannosaurus Rex lived in family groups and both parents looked after they're young like when they did the show Jurassic Fight Club.

    I remember when walking with dinosaurs came out it was just incredible. It looks so ridiculous now compared to stuff like this on Prehistoric planet, which I'm sure will look adorable compared to the next 25 years

    • @PaleoEdits
      @PaleoEdits  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I honestly think WWD looks all right, mostly thanks to it being shot on real locations. Later shows like 'Planet Dinosaur' that use 100% CGI however, look completely fake and ridiculous to me. You can come a long way just by using real environments.

      To be fair, even if they did in another ten years or so the depictions would be eventually considered inaccurate or outdated since paleontology is a constantly changing science. But yes, I would indeed love to have a 2020's revamp of the series. Technically that's coming in the form of Surviving Earth produced/co-produced by the same man who made the Walking with Series all those years ago Tim Haines.
