  • Hey guys in this video we check out the Epiphone Explorer, inspired by Gibson version. Overall I felt like this thing played very well and was very comfortable. I got some really good rock, metal and even blues tones out of it. Let me know what you think in the comments?

After 7 months of having this guitar I didn't swap anything out. It's perfect as is. It's a seriously great guitar and they got it right with this one. Best epiphone I have besides my lp trad pro 3. Top notch killer guitar.

I've had mine for a couple weeks. The tone, which I would attribute to the pickups, is as good as, if not better, than my Gibson Les Paul.

Probably doesn't suffer from flubby low end. Easy enough to dial out though.

Actually, after some time, the Gibson pickups are superior.

All the wood in that big body gives them a solid sound, "shark fin" amplifies the sound - put your ear against it while playing!

I have one of these and the original string gauge was 10-46 which sounded really nice, but I have recently switched to 11-49 gauge and the sound is (in my opinion) perfect. I’ve never heard an actual Gibson explorer, but the Epiphone with the thicker strings sounds just like a 70s Hamer explorer (like Lita Ford’s). You get a really nice chunky sound. Definitely worth the money.

Oh man. The explorer is one of my favorite guitar shapes next to the firebird. I love the look of that guitar and when you hit it with a lot of gain it sounded wicked. You've had your hands on a number of the Epiphone guitars, it does seem like they have stepped up their game, how is the pickup selector quality, knobs and input jack. These are the areas that have been weak in the past. Also the nut, did you have tuning issues?

Had an old 84 Gibson Explorer back in the day that I stupidly sold. Got into Teles when I got back into playing and still love them, but there are places where single coil twang just can't go and a Tele Deluxe still falls short. Debated getting an LP, but the siren of the Explorer keeps calling me. Rather get an Epiphone and upgrade than spend the multiples on a Gibson. Thanks for the review. Great jams!

I play , basically, only Funk, R&B, Jazz and bluesy shit. Mixed in w Grateful Dead and other Jam projects. I dont ever use anything more than a tiny bit of overdrive, which most of the time comes from cranking my Deluxe Reverb or AC 15, or when those can't be cranked, I use a Sweet Baby by Joyo along with their Tube Screamer clone.
That being said, I am really really interested in getting one of these Epiphone 'Inspired by Gibson' guitars. I have played a handful of Gibson lespauls but that's it. I like the way the Green SG looks, the LP Jr special in TV yellow, and I really do dig the fuck out of the explorer shape. With the explorers tho, I fancy the natural finishes the most.
So idk if anyone can answer this for me, or if there even is an answer, but which one would be the most compatible with my style and amp/pedal setup?
I feel like I kinda would like the LP Jr special in TV yellow with the P90s. But can the P90s be wired to work with a coil tap?

It’s almost identical to the Epi Explorer I owned from Dec. 2008 - Aug. 2012 (though mine was built with gold hardware). More than the Les Paul, the Explorer appears to be synonymous between the two brands, since the headstock is unaltered. I would consider getting another, if I were confident I would really play it and it wouldn’t just take up space, which was mainly why I got rid of the one I mentioned.
“Inspired by Gibson” wouldn’t really be a factor, and neither are those Pro Buckers (after having briefly owned the ES-335 Pro and been dissatisfied with it). A bigger deterrent has to do with three of my last six electric guitar purchases being travel oriented, which the Explorer - isn’t. (Tongue goes in cheek.)
Of course, Rich, much is said by a killer player like yourself.

I (literally) just ordered the Olive Drab Green model from Zzounds. It was a toss up between this, the Gibson LP Tribute, the Epiphone 1959 LP, and the Epiphone Sheraton II Pro. I went with my heart, which sided with the memories of the 1984 Gibson Explorer I had in my youth. The ProBucker pickups are really, really good, especially for "budget" guitars, and the premium in finish is not justified for a Gibson Explorer. I could easily swap out pickups, pots and wires, and get a neck set up for still much less than the Gibson name upcharge. This video brought me to your channel in the first place, and your riffs sold me. Thank, Rich. You're a gem!

Hows the explorer doing for you now?

    • @jefferson4245

@Nicole McIntosh I guess it didn't excite me like I thought it would, but the body is still the crazy, crazily comfortable shape that I love, and I like having an HH guitar to push my amp differently than my Tele. The neck is much more bendy than my Tele, which still takes a conscious effort to not grip too aggressively, now mostly when I'm hitting it hard. The ProBuckers are fine. I think they sound best with the neck pickup rolled back a bit and the bridge volume and tone around 8 or 9. I like the poly finish, which is thick lol, because I can't walk in an open field without bumping into something. I generally use the 2 & 3 switch positions. I'll probably upgrade the pickups and install some kind of wiring mod in the coming 6 months or so. Ultimately, it's a great guitar, one I can gig and jam without worrying too terribly much about knocks and dings. It doesn't feel or play like the Gibson I had back in the day, but it still has that look of portent that I love.

I almost bought that one, but went for the korina version instead (instead of mahogany). Zzounds had a special run of light weight korina Explorer and Flying V guitars, so I bought one of each. Very light weight, resonant, well made, beautiful guitars, and the pickups sound good in both. These are the "alnico classic and classic plus in bridge", while the Olive Drab mahogany version has the more expensive "pro bucker and pro bucker plus", not sure how much better they sound..? The Olive Drab also has CTS pots and Grover mini-tuners with 18:1 ratio, while the korina version has Grover 14:1 ratio mini tuners. I notice little things like that. The pots in the korina version are full size, but made in Korea, probably just as good as CTS. Both the Olive drab mahogany version and korina version are excellent guitars for the money, the Olive drab's retail is $649 vs $599 for korina version. I dunno, could have been just as happy with the other version, maybe should have gotten one of each, but the korina is so beautiful and light weight, just 6 pounds 9 ounces for the Explorer, a little less for the Flying V, and both are very resonant instruments.

My music store just got one of these in, I had to have it! Not disappointed as it is a comfortable, light, great playing guitar. They also had a used 2004 Epiphone Les Paul Custom in white for a song...looked brand new. Great week for me lol!
