Types of Barcode (Barcode Registration in India)
    What is a barcode:
To simply say, barcodes are vertical lines representation that can be scanned electronically to obtain the details of the goods swiftly. The black bars and spaces are designed and decoded in such a way to reveal an exact 12/13 digit long sequence of numbers. It is readable by a machine and is widely used in retail chains such as supermarkets, malls, stores, online marketplace etc.; for automatic identification of the product.
    Benefits of Barcode
Barcodes eliminate human error while doing manual data entry or data maintenance.
Barcodes save time, the billing can be made in just a fraction of seconds. As compared with the human-based billing system, barcode scanners are 25 times faster
Barcodes provide better data. The barcode can be used for inventory and pricing information, it is possible to quickly obtain the data of stock, and also helps in data analytics.
Barcodes are useful tools for tracking assets and inventory across organizations and through the entire supply chain
    Types of barcodes
Above we had seen the various advantages of barcodes. But at the same time, while choosing a type of barcode to adopt for our product, we may face certain confusions. There are many types of barcodes, each has its own unique opportunities and limitations. Basically, we can divide these barcodes into three different verticals, 1D barcodes, 2D barcodes, and 3D barcodes.
    1 Dimensional (1D) Barcodes.
Just seeing their barcodes we may everything comprises vertical lines and all are just the same with vertical lines but there is a huge difference between the same. One-dimensional (or 1D) barcodes systematically represent data by varying the widths and spacings of parallel lines. 1D barcodes are also commonly called linear barcodes.
    UPC Barcodes
UPC stands for “Universal Product Code”. A “UPC Code” is always a 12-digit number called a GTIN-12 used commonly in the USA and Canada. Initially, this was launched only for using it in grocery products. There are two types of UPC barcodes such as UPCA which comprises 12 digits and the other one is UPCE which comprises 8 digits.
    EAN Barcodes
EAN was originally called European Article Numbers and later named International Article Numbers. The UPC barcode was the original format but was used basically in the USA and Canada, at a later point in time there was a huge demand in Europe, Asia, and Australia. So GS1 started adding country codes before the 12 digit number and so that EAN is usually 13 digit code.
    Code 128 Barcodes
The youngest one in 1D family barcodes is Code128 barcode which is a high-density linear barcode and can encode all 128 characters of ASCII
It is mainly used in logistics for ordering, distribution, and transportation.
    Other types
There are some other types of barcodes also. Such as Code 39 Barcodes, ITF 14, CODABAR, ITF barcodes
    2D Barcodes
2-D barcodes A are also called matrix codes, which can store a hundred times more data as compared with 1D barcodes because these barcodes carry information in two directions ie., vertically as well as horizontally. Exactly saying, these 2D barcodes can store up to 7,089 characters. The most advantage of these QR Codes is that they can be read by anyone with the help of a Smartphone
    QR Code
Quick response codes shortly called QR Codes originated in Japan and used primarily for tracking automobile spares. URLs are basically decoded and made as QR codes and can be scanned by smartphones with an app. These QR codes are flexible in size, easy and swift readable, but they cannot be decoded with laser scanners. They are public domain and free to use.
    Data matrix code
The Data Matrix is 2D symbols that are laid out in a square or rectangular grids. Data is embedded in the Data Matrix code by way of horizontal and vertical blocks. This is also quietly similar to that of QR code but the biggest difference is Data Matrix codes have an ability to label even on small items. These are mostly used in Electronic products.
    PDF 417 code
These codes are mainly used in products that need to deliver huge information to the user. Mainly used in transport systems (e.g. for shipping labels), identification (e.g. driver licenses, passports), and document management.
    3D barcodes
3D or 3-dimensional barcodes are normally not used on grocery or general products sold in retail stores. The major need for 3 D barcodes is at manufacturing units where they cannot print and use the general barcodes in paper or sticker form which would be damaged easily by the chemical or acid reaction.
