You explained everything so well step-by-step and I’m going to have the same determination that you did to get this done. You helped one lady here in Southern California and I thank you!

Hi, thankyou so very very much, you saved us $800 by not having to buy a custom made mattress, ours had to be shortened on the side and was even easier to do as the pocket spring sheets areglued together so they came out easier.watching how you did itwas so worthwhile, we now have a custom fitted mattress at 1/3 the cost. Happy camping to you both..

Starting my car camping journey while on assignment (traveling medical professional to fill in medical staffing shortages) & my mattress was just a bit too long for the back of my SUV. Had the overhang bent downwards into the floorboards in the back but after watching this video I am totally going to shorten the length which will give me the storage space of the backseat floorboards back. VERY excited! TY! Oh & don’t worry about us traveling personnel (most comments we get are about safety). We’re able to block out all windows while parked for complete privacy & security/police patrol to ensure our constant safety. Again, TY for the video!❤
I want to thank you for helping out in the medical field that is awesome! Thank you also for leaving a comment and letting me know how this is helping you out it made my day :). Safe travels and take care! :)
This is amazing. I've been looking for a video exactly like this. We're remodeling our bunkhouse and changing out the jack-knife couch for a twin bed/day bed. I needed to figure out how to cut down the mattress. Thank you so much!

Thank you for doing this presentation and sharing it. Chime by Ashley is exactly the mattress I want to cut. Now I know where to start and what to expect.
Nice job..I have to reduce the size of a 5ft pocket spring matress to 4ft 6 inches here in the qeer old corrupt UK 🇬🇧..many thanks for this useful insight..
Thank you for watching and for your comment :), it takes a bit of time but totally can be done and doing it yourself saves lots of $$. Oh and Hello all the way to UK :)
Loved your informative video. I am going to attempt using your method for downsizing a king to a queen. I live in a small home and less is definitely more. Thanks so much for this video.
Thank Jeremy Parks! I love hearing comments like yours because that is why I posted it. I remember doing my first one and I couldn't find any video's here on TH-cam but sure didn't want to pay $$$ to do something that I thought we could do. Thanks again :)
We used your video to help us trim ours down & we have a tip as well, we have smaller coils in our mattress so decided to trim off 4 rows worth. It worked out easier to just separate the material between the 4th & 5th row of coils then just cut the section of 4 rows completely off.
I am happy to hear our video helped you out. I think some get a little afraid to give things a try but hey that's how we all learn and it builds confidence to try other things on our own. Not to mention the money that is saved doing it yourself. Thanks for sharing your tip, this is such a great place to share with other to help out and see them actually do it inspires us even more. Thanks again and thank you for watching :)

What a GREAT video❣️ We bought a nice independent Coil and foam California King and it is 4 inches too long, so I'm going to follow your lead and shorten it now. THANKS for posting this, You Rock❣️👍😁🙏
Wish I could post my pictures❣️ Took out 2 rows of springs, cut out excess foam and spring covering then glued just as you showed. Took me about 1.5-2 hours. Did need some help holding top back until I grabbed the clamps❤️ Gonna sew top down tomorrow❣️ Thank You Again❣️😁👍🙏
That quilt came from Walmart and it was such a good buy, it was only $25 for a King size. I always use a King size on my queen beds, the queen size seems to small. Of course it has been a few years lol, anyways thank you again! :)

Great video. Thanks for sharing. To hold the mattress back together at the end, would it be easier with Upholstery Twist Pins instead of sewing? BTW, you guys did a beautiful job. As a side note, there is something called DIY mattress. You can customize everything with latex and coils inside a zipper encasement and replace a layer once it gets worn out. It's not as hot as memory foam, more durable and quite affordable.
Thank you so much for videoing this process!! Apparently, I have the kind you shortened before... with coils connected with wiring all the way across. :( It looks like it's going to be painful lol, but doable. Thanks for mentioning you cut down one like this, gives me hope. I especially like how you showed the "buttoning up" process cuz I was not too sure how to do that. I believe I have a curved upholstery needle. If not, I'll go buy one. Thanks so much you guys! ❣❣
Your very welcome, it can be done but it will be a bit harder because of they are all hooked together. Just a little more work of course. Make sure you have a good sharp strong needle it makes all the difference. Thanks for watching! :)

Thank you for this video. I will be shortening my mattress if I can get it out. I put it in with help and it’s stuck. I can’t get my window covers in so I need to shorten the mattress
Great video! Thanks for the info. Any suggestions for someone trying to cut down a linked coil mattress? I am wondering how to deal with the edges. Thanks!
First I want to thank you! Yes my husband and I did do one years ago that had the linked coils. I am assuming you are talking about the two bars that go around the mattress. What we did after we removed the coils we used a hack saw and cut through the top and bottom bars on the sides of the mattress. Make sure when you cut the bars you cut back a few inches behind the last row coils that are left. Then we pushed the bar against the coils and tied the coils to the bars and then we wire tied or (zipped tied) both ends of the side bars together. I sure hope this helps. If you have any questions on this please ask and we will try to help you out :)
I would think you can, mine had each coil spring in what they call a pocket, I also had to cut some of the memory foam back. I really didn't know exactly what mine was going to be like until I opened it up but figured they are all pretty much the same. I hope this helps you out.
Thanks@@idratherbecamping6298 Yeah, i've just looked again and the one i've bought has springs in pockets like you say. It's about 4" too long for my campwervan and i might just try and compress it into the space. If that doesn't work, i'll attempt what you did, thanks.
Hi Kreative Kittiz, I am not sure what link to the other video you are wanting :( . Are you referencing to something I talked about in this video? If you could let me know I will do my best to help you out :) .
Thank you! I would think you could if your mattress has the coils in it. Mine was individually wrapped on this mattress, I have also done one that the springs were clamped together it was a older mattress it was a bit harder but still got the same results by removing a few rolls of the springs. I also know that some people have done this and took springs out in order to shape it to fit the bow of their boat ( the point) making the mattress a triangle shape. I hope this helps :)
I actually was searching for a video like this and searched the comments hoping someone had asked THIS question already! We moved into a small trailer and i would like to be able to do this so my daughter can have more space. Take off a handfull of inches off the width of her twin mattress. thanks! 💜💜💜
It is a Chime 12 Inch Hybrid Queen Mattress, when I bought this one they also sold a 10" and a 14". I even did one years ago, it was a bit harder because of the way the spings were interlocked together but we got it done. This type was so much easier :). Thanks for watching :) P.S. They sale this brand at Ashley and Target too, probably other places also.
I used a heavy polyester coat thread, that is what I already had. Probably another good thread which would work good would be upholstery thread, but the heavy coat thread work well and is holding up great. As far as the stitch I used, I would call it a sloppy whip stitch LOL. Ha it would had been a lot easier if I would had stopped and ran to the store and got a better needle to use, but it all worked out and I saved some $$$. Hope this helped you out :)
@@idratherbecamping6298 yes I did help, I’m thinking of buying a innerspring mattress to replace the hard foam mattress in my roof top tent. The new mattress is probably just one spring in width wide. So after watching your video i have some idea what I’m up for. Cheers Andrew from Tasmania
I love hearing that this helped you out, thats why we wanted to post it hoping it would help others out. Thanks for watching and for leaving a kind comment :) .
It is still all good! No sagging or structure problems, I have no negatives at all. We still are using it, I would do it again :) . Thank you for your quistions and for watching!
So what if I need the other part of the mattress for my camper so WHENEVER I'm in DRIVER mode I wanna place it then WHENEVER I'm in bed mode I'll need it
hey, i love your video. but how would i go about cutting my mattress thinner?? not cutting the length but the height - to fit a bunk bed. my mattress is currently 12in high. the bunk bed recommends 5in-9in. please help :(
Thank you, I wish I could help you out but I am not sure how you would do that. If the mattress has springs like ours I don't think it could be done. If it's all foam then maybe you could slice it thinner. I sure hope there is a solution out there to help you out, it would be interesting to know how it's done.
Thanks Dale Hutchinson, I posted this video hoping that maybe it would let others know that it can be done and really not to hard to do it yourself :). Thanks again and thank you for watching!
Hi and thank you for watching the mattres is a Signature Design by Ashley Queen Size Chime 12 Inch Hybrid Mattress with Cooling Gel Memory Foam. Have a wonderful day! 🙂
We ordered it online from Ashley furniture store, the mattress brand name is Chime plush hybrid. You probably could order it through other stores also. I just ordered through Ashley at the time because they had the best deal on them at the time. Hope this helps, and thank you for watching! :)
I am not sure but maybe if you cut down carpet tape into skinny strips. We have used carpet tape to hold on molding strips while the glue dries in our 5th wheel and it worked great. I hope this helps.
It's a queen size bed and I bought queen size sheets. The sheets I bought has elastic all the way around on the fitted sheet, kinda like a lot of crib sheets our made. They stayed on just like as if the mattress was never shortened. I have even used regular sheets that just have the regular corners too, didn't have a problem with them either. I do prefer the one's that have the elastic all the way around even for my mattress at home. I hope this helps! :)
you could also get the sheet suspenders and tighten up the corners that way. I use them on my bed on the regular bc i dont sleep well and i toss and turn all night which loosens the sheet. every. time. :( 💜💜💜
I'm sorry I don't have a link but if you google Ashley Chime 12 Inch mattress you will find them. Many online stores carry them to such as Overstock.com and Wayfair. they are probably around $250 to $300 for a Queen size. I hope this helps you out.
Thank you Ken san for watching , the very first one I did was linked coils. Of course this one was easier but I did the one with link coils and it turned out great too. It's not to big of a deal really just a little extra time :) .
@@frankenstein3163 Yes there was, my husband use a hack saw on the straight pieces at the end of the sides. Then I pushed the curved piece in against the coils and wire tied it back together and onto the coils. I hope this helps and makes sense. :)

Thanks sooo much, this is awesome and exactly what I was looking for...Im cutting a single shorter to fit in my car and this video has enabled me to understand the matress layers...thanks again...✌💚😬
Thank you so much butterfly 238, for this is the reason I posted a video of it. I was hoping it would help some out there not to be intimated by doing it their self. Again thank you for your nice comment and for watching :)
@@idratherbecamping6298 I did my matress and it turned out well...a bit rough, but good...lol...I had to go and buy a grinder for the springs...but the video really helped as it made me prepared...I think it was like the first matress you did...a bit trickier...yet doable...thanks again for a great video...✌💚😃
Awesome job... Thank you
Thank you so much! :)
Thanks so much. You have saved me pounds ❤
Thank you for this video. I will be shortening my mattress if I can get it out. I put it in with help and it’s stuck. I can’t get my window covers in so I need to shorten the mattress
I love hearing comments, it lets me know that this video is helping others out 😃! Good luck getting it out, once again thank you!
Very good work, I am impressed
Thank you so much, it is amazing how much money you can save by doing things your self! :)
Great video, can i do this with a pocket sprung, memory foam matress combined please?
I would think you can, mine had each coil spring in what they call a pocket, I also had to cut some of the memory foam back. I really didn't know exactly what mine was going to be like until I opened it up but figured they are all pretty much the same. I hope this helps you out.
Thanks@@idratherbecamping6298 Yeah, i've just looked again and the one i've bought has springs in pockets like you say. It's about 4" too long for my campwervan and i might just try and compress it into the space. If that doesn't work, i'll attempt what you did, thanks.
Thank you for making this vid. :)
Well thank you for watching, and if it's something your going to tackle I hope it helps you out. :)
@I'd rather be camping would you mind adding the link to the other video in the description? Or posting it here? thanks! :D 💜💜💜
Hi Kreative Kittiz, I am not sure what link to the other video you are wanting :( . Are you referencing to something I talked about in this video? If you could let me know I will do my best to help you out :) .
Great video! Thank You, this is what I was looking for:D
That is so good to hear, thank you very much for taking the time to comment :)
Thanks... great idea and job
Thank you! I love to hear that this video might help others. Thanks again and thank you for watching! :)
Im gonna recycle an old matress for my bery old dog...i know he will appreciate it
Hello, great video thanks for posting, would this method work if I needed to shorten the width of the mattress? Hope you can help :)
Take off a handfull of inches off the width of her twin mattress. thanks! 💜💜💜
So easy with this brand... What mattress maker was this one for future reference/ anyone looking to do one themselves?
It is a Chime 12 Inch Hybrid Queen Mattress, when I bought this one they also sold a 10" and a 14". I even did one years ago, it was a bit harder because of the way the spings were interlocked together but we got it done. This type was so much easier :). Thanks for watching :) P.S. They sale this brand at Ashley and Target too, probably other places also.
Awesome, thank you!
Thank you, sure hope it helps you out!
Somehow i missed what type of thread u used.
What type.of.stitch ?? Running??
.
Great job!
Thank you, I shared this video hoping it would help others out and save them some $$ :) . Thank you again and thank you for watching!
Thank you!
Clever and well done
Thank you, we always try to save $$ where we can :). Thank you again for watching!
Good job.
Thank you, also want to thank you for watching and hoping if it is something your taking on that this video helps you out. Thanks again!
AMAZING! thank you so much for this. As you say a bit of work involved BUT it saves money! I will be doing this for my caravan. 👍
I love hearing that this helped you out, thats why we wanted to post it hoping it would help others out. Thanks for watching and for leaving a kind comment :) .
How’s the mattress work since resizing it? Any sagging on the resized end? Still maintaining its structure? Any negatives since resized?
Thanks this was awesome
Your very welcome, I hope it helps you out! :)
cool...good job, thanks
Thanks Dale Hutchinson, I posted this video hoping that maybe it would let others know that it can be done and really not to hard to do it yourself :). Thanks again and thank you for watching!
Do you mind stating what brand/type of mattress this is?
Hi and thank you for watching the mattres is a Signature Design by Ashley Queen Size Chime 12 Inch Hybrid Mattress with Cooling Gel Memory Foam. Have a wonderful day! 🙂
Very helpful
Can you share the name brand of your mattress and where you purchased it?
We ordered it online from Ashley furniture store, the mattress brand name is Chime plush hybrid. You probably could order it through other stores also. I just ordered through Ashley at the time because they had the best deal on them at the time. Hope this helps, and thank you for watching! :)
@@idratherbecamping6298 Thank you very much for this information. I appreciate you taking the time to get back to me. 🙂❤️
Is there any kind of tape that I can use instead of clue gun?
I am not sure but maybe if you cut down carpet tape into skinny strips. We have used carpet tape to hold on molding strips while the glue dries in our 5th wheel and it worked great. I hope this helps.
After modifying the mattress size, how do you find sheets to fit it now?
It's a queen size bed and I bought queen size sheets. The sheets I bought has elastic all the way around on the fitted sheet, kinda like a lot of crib sheets our made. They stayed on just like as if the mattress was never shortened. I have even used regular sheets that just have the regular corners too, didn't have a problem with them either. I do prefer the one's that have the elastic all the way around even for my mattress at home. I hope this helps! :)
you could also get the sheet suspenders and tighten up the corners that way. I use them on my bed on the regular bc i dont sleep well and i toss and turn all night which loosens the sheet. every. time. :( 💜💜💜
Do you have the link for the mattress you bought?
I'm sorry I don't have a link but if you google Ashley Chime 12 Inch mattress you will find them. Many online stores carry them to such as Overstock.com and Wayfair. they are probably around $250 to $300 for a Queen size. I hope this helps you out.
what brand is the new mattress?
It's a Chime Hybrid 12" Queen size.
Nice 1 that's cool
Thank you Sperrin Outdoors you are always so kind :)
I need to do that to myn. I think my mattress is all linked coils :(
Thank you Ken san for watching , the very first one I did was linked coils. Of course this one was easier but I did the one with link coils and it turned out great too. It's not to big of a deal really just a little extra time :) .
@@idratherbecamping6298 on the linked coil mattress was there one solid outer edge wire that trims around the whole mattress ?
@@frankenstein3163 Yes there was, my husband use a hack saw on the straight pieces at the end of the sides. Then I pushed the curved piece in against the coils and wire tied it back together and onto the coils. I hope this helps and makes sense. :)
@@idratherbecamping6298 cool.. TY.. I was hoping i would not have to weld the weirs back to geather for the support. BY the BY I love your name "I'd rather be camping" :)
WHY
We shortened it to make it easier to get around the end of the bed. It worked out great!
Your sound is awful
Sorry we don't have anything fancy, we used what we had :)
Thank you!
Your welcome, thank you for watching!
