TIMING BELT & PULLEYS PT. 3: ALIGNMENT CONCERNS | MECH MINUTES | MISUMI USA

In the previous episode of MechMinutes, Timing Belts and Pulleys, we looked at belt wear signs and some common causes of excessive wear and failure. In this episode, we’ll take a closer look at one of those causes, commonly encountered during setup: belt and pulley alignment.
Proper alignment is an essential component of maximizing your timing belt’s full potential; misalignment, at best, can lead to premature wear or frayed edges, climbing the pulley flange, and in worse cases, reduced load transmission, system efficiency losses, running off the pulley completely, and early belt failure through “unzipping”. Misalignment is the biggest reason that belts fail, with improper tensioning following close behind. There are two main types of belt and pulley misalignment: Angular and Parallel. Determining whether misalignment is present in your system is a relatively easy and straightforward process, and only a straight line, commonly a straightedge or laser, is required.
Start by choosing two pulleys in your system to compare at a time, and place one end of the line across the diameter of one of the pulleys. Extend the line towards the other pulley and take note of how many points of contact the line has with the second pulley.
If the line has full contact (4 contact points, laying plumb) with both of the pulleys, your alignment is correct. If, however, the second pulley has only one point of contact, there is angular misalignment in your system, and you need to make adjustments to the angle at which the pulleys are mounted.
If there are no points of contact between the line and the second pulley, or if the line overlaps the body of the second pulley, there is parallel misalignment, and the position of the second pulley needs to be adjusted along its axis.
Occasionally, your system may have a combination of parallel and angular misalignment, and in order to correct the alignment, you will need to alternate between measurements and adjustments.
Once you’ve identified and fixed any misalignment between the first two pulleys in your system, you can repeat the process using one of the correctly aligned pulleys and any other in your multi-pulley system until all issues have been addressed. Now that you know how to properly align your timing belt and pulleys, the next step to ensuring your system setup is belt tensioning. We’ll take a look at how to achieve optimal belt tension in the next episode of MechMinutes: Timing Belts and Pulleys.

SINCE WHEN are the pulleys the same width ? Straight edge alignment not applicable here.

I wonder if the music could have been any louder. For a second there I almost heard a voice explaining what I was watching...

this addresses pulley alignment, not the dynamics of belt tracking

Music is distracting - should be toned down.

Would have been a fantastic series if not for the music. Anxiety level peaked in less than a minute, I couldn't do it. Let me know if you remove the unbearable. Jusayin

where in the world are pulleys next to each other. Almost useless video.
