No one probably needs this, but here's a somewhat short summary of the chapter- Simon wakes up after his hallucination. He sees the pig's head, but isn't sure of what it is at first because of all the flies surrounding it. He gets up and see's the dead body of the parachute in the distance. In his haste to see what it is, he falls and cracks his shin. He discovers that there is no beast, and it was the parachute in that was making the noise. He runs to the boys' new camp to go tell them about his discovery. Back at camp, Piggy and Ralph are swimming. They figure out that all of the boys went to join Jack at his feast and decide to go see what's happening. After they eat and get there, Jack proclaims that he wants to start his own tribe. Almost everyone agrees with him, and they end up doing their dance/chant. At this time, Simon is coming out of the forest. The boys are so worked up and scared that they attack him, thinking it's the beast. Eventually, Simon breaks away from them and falls off the cliff onto the beach below. The boys jump on top of him again, and beat him to death. He dies there, and the sea carries his dead body away. Other points- 1. There is a storm happening the whole time, but stops after Simon dies. 2. The storm also carries the dead body of the parachutist away and into the sea.
Me: *confused about what was happening at the end thinking he was talking about the dead parachute guy* The audio book: “Simons dead body moved out toward the open sea” Me: “HOLD THE FUCK UP” *punches my pillow out of anger cause Simon didn’t deserve to die*
Lmfao I wasnt even paying attention to the details since I thought it was just their same old dance and chant.. until he read "Simon's dead body.." n then I was like WTFF.. rewinded it back 5 mins to really pay attention to what had happened..
This chapter is so sad. I really wish that this never happened to Simon The boys actions were brutal and unfair, clearly their lives of hunting and savagery have had an impact on their mental health at this point.
what was more interesting is that the pig head was saying to simon “the beast was something easy to kill” and something like “if you go back and tell the others that the beast isn’t real, simon, piggy, roger, they’ll kill you.”
Me at the beginning of the book: "aww it's kinda sweet reading this because of the kid's optimism and whatnot." Me now: "DAFUQ YOU MEAN AN INNOCENT CHILD THOUGHT HE SAW A DEMONIC PIG AND GOT KILLED?!"
Who else is here for school?😂 it just makes th8ngs easier, and plus your voice is calming and the different voices for different kids is genius, you really saved me.
I stumbled across your videos about halfway through my novel study unit. I typically read the entire book aloud with the students over the course of the unit but your videos really saved my voice! Plus, your reading is so entertaining and the students really appreciate the added effects. We are reading Chapter 10 together tomorrow and will likely finish the book on Friday or Monday at the latest so unfortunately, we will miss out on Chapter 10 and 12 from you, but we'll be sure to make use of your Chapter 11 reading. Thanks for the uploads!
One thing that stuck out to me was how the writer symbolizes the beast as it actually being humanity,(us). The war that caused the boys plane being struck which is why their on the island. Also the war causing the death of the man, and him landing on the mountain. Lastly the fear of the beast caused for the death of Simon, Showing how the “beast” manifested throughout the story.
Like many people I am reading this book for English, but I’m not doing questions for this chapter and chapter 10 since I was really sick when it was assigned. I’m really glad that I’m not doing questions for this chapter because I had no idea what was going on until I read a comment summarizing the chapter. Also, Simon was my favorite character, the last sentence hit me like a truck.
literally two days ago my friend and i said we liked this book and talked about how we didn't really care what happened to the boys as long as Simon was ok welp time to cry
In class we reffered simon as jesus due to the angles but then we talked about the simalarities about them both, they were killed gruesomly, both very peaceful, saw the good in people, and somewhat betrayed
Okay this is really sad Simon is a really great character he represented all the characters in the book, probably has to be one of my favorite characters in this book🥺
Smolfry they were confused after they saw a creature running out of the forest and they dint know that it was Simon so they attacked and murdered thinking it was the beast when in fact there was no beast just the pilot
They have been overtaken by savagery I honestly don’t think that at the time during the chase they understood or remembered that other people are real that lives have value and that ending them is wrong and can’t be taken back, they were in a constant state of fear so when the atoritty of jack says kill the beast Than that is the beast and it is already dead, they knew not to trust their own feelings intuition or emotion, in the moment the panic and excitement made them amped to except whatever Jack told them in even after they couldn’t see why to think any other way. And even if Simon wasn’t really the beast and they killed a human they still did nothing wrong, if killing was Ron why would it feel so good to do why would they have such a desire to go and do it again?
I just realized I found such a parallel with another book I read for school, Simon dying was so much like Johnny dying in the outsiders, obviously Simon didn’t get the honor and appreciation that Johnny did, also he was younger and deserved even better, both were my favorite characters which honestly makes me sad since they both end up dying before being eighteen year olds, but both had similar personalities and aspects, both were kind of treated like the kid of the groups they were in with Simon being the weak yet sharp and logical kid of the chior, while Johnny and his gang, he was treated like the kid despite him not being the youngest, yet he was yet still weak but also passionable, and when I compare these two characters from the two different series that have nothing to do with each other side by side, they are both the similar weak boys of the group who had potential and tons of character development, as well as seemingly being a pretty likable character for the audience, and still ended up dying
Now we have just Piggy left, the only one who’s still human with Simon gone, I’m not questioning why Simon HAD to die, I’m questioning why they mistook Simon for the “beast”. Simon is a beast to the group, but not to us.
The psychology behind this book is so so interesting but it’s just horrible. Props to William Golding for having the ability to write this and write it so well

It hurts my heart, too. No matter how many times I read this chapter.
It’s so similar to Johnny from the outsiders please tell me I’m not the only one who sees it grave and well
Simon and piggy are like the only smart ones and the ones that don’t deserve to die.
R.I.P Simon
The most interesting part is in chapter 6 when Simon says "I dont believe in the beast"
oh my god this is so deep
what was more interesting is that the pig head was saying to simon “the beast was something easy to kill” and something like “if you go back and tell the others that the beast isn’t real, simon, piggy, roger, they’ll kill you.”
He said maybe the beast is us too
I have... no clue what is going on... but I do at the same time..
