J Geils Band Floyd's Hotel + Hard Drivin' Man 1972

  • The Most Rockin J Geils Band concert at Boston's Orpheum Theater - 3 Sony AVC 3200 B&W cameras and an SEG 1 - terrible technology but driving music - They asked George Wardwell if we could record this - Charles Phillips, Andrika Donovan operated cameras and I switched. Peter Gowan and Barry Ober engineered sound - there's a one inch master somewhere, but this clip is from the 1/2" transfered by video guru Paul Beck - levels are wild, someday we'll edit & fix - but 4 now, watch Peter pummel Magic Dick - this rocks!

First time i seen these guys was at the Eastown Theatre in lovely Detroit around 1971. They were the 2nd band of 3 playing that night. Procal Harum was headlining with a very young guitarist named...Robin Trower. J. Geils proceeded to tear that place down with their patented brand of nitro feuled R&B. Some punks were whipping cherry bomb's off the high domed ceiling and the band just kept on playing without missing a frickin' beat!!! They blew everyone away that night!!! Procal Harum took a very long time to hit the stage, my guess was to cool the frenzied crowd down. J.Geils from around that time had a reputation of upstaging everyone they went up against, no one wanted to be on the same bill, which led to them being one of the very first bands to ever get headlining status so quick! That band gave off enough energy to power the City--Damn they were GOOD!!!

J Geils owned Detroit back in the day. I recall Wolf stating Detroit was their second favorite venue behind their hometown of Boston.

Very few bands worked THIS hard on-stage. Incredible that they did this so well for so long. Sadly, J. Geils is no longer with us. Everyone on this stage is a star.

I agree that the person who put this up deserves a medal. Peter Wolf also deserves a medal for this performance. What a beast! He was mesmerizing.

Fantastic stuff. I saw them many times at the Fillmore East. They used to be the opening act and then moved up to second billing. I remember one night they upstaged Ten Years After, who was the headliner. Then they finally became the headliner and the Fillmore East closed. It was only around for 3 years here in NY. Every show they did was great. They always gave it their all and never disappointed. When they reunited, I saw them in NJ and at Jones Beach. They were just as good as ever.

I hitchhiked across America with Full House and who live at Leeds in my backpack from 1972 thru 1975 spreading the gospel from Portland Oregon to New Orleans and all points in between. Gaureeteed to get anyone on the floor or out the door. Harddriven man. that's what I am.

Just saw the last night in Boston although no J. Geils but the rest of the band rocked just like they always have. I was at this show back when I was a younger man and I can say for sure Peter Wolf still has the same amount of energy today.

The first time I saw geils was at Yost arena in A2. Believe it or not they let us young stoners sit on the front of the stage with them. What a life changing event that was for me. We felt like kings. Stoned but very lively kings.

This has become my "GO-TO" video when I wish to revisit some of the brain cells I haven't seen since my 1st Geils gig at the Fillmore East, the 1st time they touched those sacred boards.....

    J. Geils has to have had the biggest sell out of all time - from Detroit Demolition to Centerfold !! but when they were still rockin' they were THE best ! Their "The J Geils Band" is the only cd that stays in my car changer permanently.

The Great J Geils Band! They weren’t stars, didnt write GREAT songs, but they were funky, soulful, and cared. Great band. Loved em. 1978’s Sanctuary is probably their creative peak...some really good, catchy tunes. “I don’t hang around much anymore” amongst them

Whilst doing tour sound for Traffic gels opened for us in San Antonio and it was love at first "floor monitor" no feedback. We (Activated Air Audio, Phila.) did many gigs with them over the years. Faye Dunaway toured with us when married to Peter Wolf. They were a great boogy woogy band. I loved every minute of it!

Thanks on every level. Those were the more interesting and more wild days. My generation just caught the end but JGB along with early Faces and E-Street Band were the epitome of live rock band performances. Hands down. JGB may even have been the best of the best on those certain "on" nights.

those were the days where Air Guitars were still experimental. What Peter is playing is one of the very first prototypes of the Air Guitar as we know it today. They had the concept down, but had not yet made Air Guitars transparent.

It was one of those on nights! Saw them later again but the magic wasn't there.....I guess they knew that too.

I saw these guys @ Dutch festival Pinkpop in 1980 and they blew everybody off-stage that day. I'd only known them by name till then, originally visited the festival for the likes of the Jam, the Specials, Joe Jackson, but they, as well as the Van Halen-guys - live as terrible as can be in contrary to some nice studio-stuff - were totally demolished by JGB.. :-)
