Master class in cylinders! After watching your set I am fully prepared to disassemble the FEL dump cylinder on my Kubota BX23. At full extension, the gland offers little support yi the shaft. I can now diagnose if it only needs new soft parts, or if it has a deficient design that would benefit from being longer with some sort of improved shaft support. Many thanks for taking the time to show the details, as that is where the knowledge is.
OMG You did a GREAT Job there! I have done tons of these but never had option to machine any of it. It just shows me the skill of all rebuilders is still going strong. Very good!
You do good work. I worked in an ultra precision machine shop fo many, many years and am retired now. I cut my teeth on Pratt 2e jig borers working to a tenth tolerance. Watching you made me miss my younger days when I had good eyes and could eyeball things close enough to put a one tenth interapid on it and not run out of travel.

We do tons of cylinder repair at my work and I have been there 16 years..... Usually turn a "pin" on the end of the rod and drill a "socket" in the eye for alignment. The drill and tap idea is AWESOME thank you! PS I work in another department but will pass this on.
+gentharris I use that trick sometimes too but find the thread is even better. Holds the eye and you don't have to press it on, or hold it if the fit is too loose.

Hmm, Suggestion to Edge Tech. Instead of a thumb screw, how about a stiff spring detent like on a ratchet. That way it will stay in place but be faster to switch from position to position.

This video was fun to watch but I have to disagree with your changing the piston seal size. I feel sorry for the next guy that has to repack that cyl. If it’s not you. For myself I order the packing kits before doing the work for less down time and that cyl. would have ruined my day. But I get. You did a wonderful job ! Just keep in mind the mechanics that may have to work on you improvements. I get my seals at O-Rings and Things located in Fontana CA. They have everything. Again this video was the bomb. Thank you.

I do hydraulics and I want to say that I enjoyed watching the video. I always wonder how they get the rod eye on the rod and I understand now why you tapped that 1/4-20 in the rod and rodeye, to centre it to get welded. Keep up the good work in the videos.

I was wondering what your take is on building these cylinders from scratch only smaller than this size I am self taught in machine work (still a Loong Long WAAAY to go I might add! lol) and have learned a GREAT DEAL from you! and mrpete! I bought a 1950's SB 14"x72" tool room lathe w/tapper attachment and really want to try and make a cylinder any info you can offer would be really welcome-Thanks for all you time and effort to make and post these Wonderful videos !!!
Hydraulics was something I had to learn on my own with the help of some technical manuals. etc. (Industrial Trash Compactors, Cardboard balers, material handling equipment was just part of my duties). You can almost find in any larger town a liberal arts type college but there is a serious lack of Technical schools for learning these kind of trades. I encourage any High Schoolers that has a vocational alternative to take advantage of it, you still graduate with a normal degree and if you decide to further you education in some other field you will have these kinds of skills and knowledge that will help you later in life.

i also like the psm seal...almost the same as the 2700 but different groove dimensions. You also might mention sometime that a HUGE advantage of the ps2700 or psm piston seal is the fact that they do not stretch out during application like the ps1400, ps1600, and ps1800
Another great video Adam, I really like the fact im seeing young guys gain knowledge interest and inspiration from watching you work. I feel our country has lost much of its can-do spirit with the new hi tech age we live in. Too many young guys grow up with no skills except for how to use a cell phone and video controller, one of our countries biggest strengths used to be its strong manufacturing capability like back in WWII era. I think your channel and those like it are doing more good for the country than most of its politicians, we need to teach our youth important skills like this so they aren't lost leaving us to buy from other countries that take our money and send us sub standard junk. MAKE IT IN THE USA-!
Aloha Adam, Most of the time I had trouble with the pin spanner because before me several people had removed it with a hammer and punch, I guess that goes back to the sign on Keith Fenner's wall, it costs more to repair your repair.. and is that a special ratchet for working around corners or a calibrated torque arm!!! What I do when installing those smaller rod seals is get it started like you did, then grab my small plastic handled hammer (yes hammer!) And holding by the head, use the end of the handle to push the seal in. This gives me something I can push with my whole hand rather than my fingers.
Do you ever have those be really stubborn to come apart? I had to take apart two little tiny cylinders with 4 holes on the gland nut for 1/4 pins", and 1.625 spacing. It took nearly 400 ft-lbs to spin the glands loose. I had to make a custom pin wrench as there was no way the 8" adjustable ones were going to cut it.
