It IS a great line, and I don't mean to ruin it or anything, but Waits didn't write it, it's an existing idiom that goes back quite a ways. The origin may be unknown, but I haven't done the research to say for sure.
My momma passed 13 years ago 4/14. She and Daddy are buried in the woods of Louisiana in a country church cemetery. The azaleas are in blossom as are the gardenias. I can smell Momma's biscuits and hear the birds singing. This song puts them a little more at rest. Thanks Puddles for making life a little more tolerable.
I’m a huge fan of Tom and his voice, but it’s really nice to hear a traditionally impressive vocalist like you covering his tunes. Please, please, please take a shot at “The House Where Nobody Lives”.
I once saw Les Claypool sit in on bass with Gogol Bordello w/ guest guitarist Kirk Hammet do an entire set of Tom Waits covers at Bonnaroo 2008.... probably the highlight of my existence! However, with this said, Puddles does great covers of Waits as well.
This is one of my favorite Tom Waits songs. And Puddles sings it with all the sincerity and melancholy as only he can. You're amazing. I love you. Keep singing Tom Waits songs!
you forgot playwrite, fluent in several languages, avid anti-advertisement spokesman, owner/collector of MANY rare things, and I think I still missed a few accolades Tom was a legend.

Solid performance. In my opinion, one of the things that sit you apart from so many performers is that you completely own what ever you are singing. Always clean and clear vocals projected with emotion. Stage presence. Thanks for song.

I love it when you cover Tom Waits. Loved this so much I had to unlike it and like it again a couple of times, just for the extra emphasis. Your voice and musical taste are both exquisite. Thank you.
I can’t stop playing this... it sounds like an offer of hope faith and recovery from a world so many of us have a hard time living in based on self will... “ Please... come on up to the house!” God Bless you sir!
This is maybe THE most important song you've done. I was blasting it in my car people asked me who it was. We bonded cus of you. Keep spreading love puddles.
Wonderful rendition. In addition to the vocals, I very much enjoy the facial and body gestures that accompany your performances. Kindly keep the Waits/Brennan coming.
Well done. Far too many people singing a Waits song try to imitate Waits instead of addressing the song on its own merits. This song is a simple spiritual and that's how it should be sung. Again, well done.
I've been listening and crying to this song for over 20 years,I grew up in the house my grandfather built for his 14 children and got sold after my last two aunts who lived there passed away, always had Sunday dinners there, was in our family for almost 100 years
I've always found this song to be deeply familiar and comforting. Waits has an incredible ear for concise, powerful words. "Come on up to the house." Nailed it.
You make me laugh and cry, but your interpretations of some songs warm my heart thank you for there being my friend who may never read this comment, from a friend in Brazil
This is so beautiful. I am so grateful I found your videos 3 years ago. I've been so comforted and uplifted during three of the most difficult years I've ever endured. You helped me to keep going and to keep on trying during it all.
The first time I listened to this I didn't take to it. But after a couple more times it has grown on me and now it is one my favorite Puddles tunes. Some songs have to grow in your ear a bit.
This is on PPP's "Songs That Got Me Through the Plague," and one can see how this song would. His rendition is soul-full. Very recently saw him perform in Carmel, and it's one of the finest shows I have ever seen, and I've seen a lot.
Tom Waits has a superb turn of phrase. Puddles does a beautiful rendition here. I think I'd like this played at my funeral (not that I'm planning on checking out anytime soon)
Happy Birthday, Tom.
We love you Mr. Puddles.
One of my all time favorite Waits songs. I love the line "Come down off that cross. We can use the wood.".
I’ve never heard this song before, but I can agree that it is a great song, and I also really love that line : )

He could have sang it with any perspective, from any camera angle, but no he sang it to you. The eye contact, the coffee, absolutely beautiful.
Every time I watch Puddles, I get a little more amazed. Any body else feel that way? Shockingly good.

Puddles is the only person who should ever be allowed to cover Tom Waits.

I'm so use to hearing this song sound like it's sung by sentient gravel that it's almost jarring to hear it so clean. Great work as always.
Same here, there was a second that I forgot who was singing at the first piano note lmao
Sentient gravel is my favorite term for Tom Waits now.
