Love these, especially with TO. Moved away frommy home state, but I was a junior league bowler in southern Maine in the late 70s, so these really bring back memories. 'Electronic' scoring must have come in soon after this.
When it comes to announcers, Nova Scotians like Don Gillis do it best. Keep in mind that Gillis is originally from Antigonish before he moved to the United States when he was a kid. I was surprised that he never got inducted into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame in the Builder category for raising Candlepin Bowling's profile in Massachusetts. In Nova Scotia, they had their own Candlepin Bowling main announcer, notably Bruce Stephen.
@HalifaxHercules thanks for the info. Wonder if candlepin bowling is less popular in Nova Scotia now as compared to the 70's and 80's like it is in NH and MA.
Tom Olszta was close to getting a "Clean Game" on the first string. In Bowling terms, a "Clean Game" is when a Bowler marks in every frame in one string. Only a few Bowlers ever got "Clean Game" in this series, notable Rosario Lechiara.
Tom seems like a stand out athlete. You can see him cheering on his opponent when he got his second strike. Nothing like today’s athletes that exhibit very poor sportsmanship.
Crazy that it had the highest ratings on Saturday yet they could not sell advertisements which is why it went off the air. They didn't know how to market this sport.
i bowled in the same league as jack at the acton lanes the last few years and his son who is about the same age as jack here is on his team. the covid thing brought an end to the league until further notice, i miss it.
burnlastsunday my grandfather was so pumped about that match bc he made a $100 bet with gary carrington prior to the show and also actually under the weather a little when he faced jack ray
I just found these and they bring back such fond memories of Saturday lunches at my grandparents house!
I moved out of New England in 1978, so this is the only candlepin bowling I get to see. Thanks for posting these videos. I really enjoy them.
Tom Olzsta - is a phenomenal candlelit bowler and a winner at most. No one can or does beat him. He is the best competitor .

Don Gillis is the🐐 of sports media history in Boston
Don Gillis was a real pro. He makes everything look effortless and relaxes everyone.

Thanks for these!
Glad your back with these.
Tommy treats his opponents like bowling pins. He just keeps knocking them down, one right after another. What a terrific bowler!
1:45 "Alright ..."
5:37 left them speechless, can't say I've seen that before myself either
4:12 Half Worcester
28:04 AMAZING SHOT

OLZSTA IS THE 🐐 OF CANDLEPIN BOWLING..

Jack Ray reminds me of Peter Lupus, from the original Mission Impossible TV show.
5:10 Legend
I remember that show how is very little
i didnt know Eric Estrada bowled
i think when he wasn't riding his motorcycle he would go bowling.
28:00 Hooo baby!
i always wondered how many of these bowling big shots were bowling proprieters or managers, some have wicked high averages.
@Jayson Mello negative.
You mean "wicked pissa" high averages? That is New England talk.
@Jayson Mello negative.
i answered your question.which is no i don't.
@Jayson Mello it's all good.
Yeah, Tommy...you wanted him to get the triple because the match was already decided at that point!
Well obviously he wouldn't wanted to get a triple if it was a close match!
Sometimes the wood helps, sometimes it doesn't
like who can hate the big TO?
Won Jack with a 99 opener.Then he still bowls a 403.
Tom Olszta came close to getting a "Clean Game" on his opening string, which would have put him alongside Rosario Lechiara.
He did have nice hair. But Tom was the goat

Candlepin Bowling with Don Gillis did have some sponsors during the series, especially during the Tournament of Champions.
@@HalifaxHercules they had spoken sponsors but not nearly what they needed. That was the reason it went off the air. The ratings were very high.
23:53 ya don't see that every day
Yes you do. Half Worcester

Wonder why Tom was so animated throughout the match? Usually he's calm and focused.
burnlastsunday my grandfather was so pumped about that match bc he made a $100 bet with gary carrington prior to the show and also actually under the weather a little when he faced jack ray
@@aaronfontaine6400 the big TO is the GOAT
If he hadn't sucked in the first string he would have won.
Tom definitely fouled in the intro

A 99 string. I could a done that.
