○ Introduction to the work
Anyone who dismisses all Soviet functionaries as cultural philistines fails to recognize the potential for awakening in the early revolutionary years. Georgi Chicherin, for example, a companion of Lenin, was not only a diplomatically skilled foreign minister, but also an ardent Mozart admirer. And he was downright enthusiastic about the "Jupiter Symphony," which he saw as the sum of Mozart's symphonies: "a poem of ecstasy, of exaltation!"
Like so many others, Tschitscherin tried to put into words what overwhelmed him, especially in the finale of the C major symphony: the combination of a jubilant, life-affirming basic mood with the highest, but completely unstrained artistry. The brief main motif, consisting of four notes, is already grandiose; Mozart surrounds it with a series of musical cells that repeatedly condense into small beginnings of fugues. The climax, however, is the final section: five different motives pile up here to form "fivefold counterpoint," a masterpiece of craftsmanship. And it was probably the concert entrepreneur and violinist Johann Peter Salomon who first recognized in this music the world-shaping power of the heavenly father Jupiter.
Mozart's last three symphonies of 1788 were composed in turbulent times. Emperor Joseph II had become involved in a war against the Ottoman Empire, and the Viennese apparently had more pressing needs than listening to Mozart's new works: In any case, there is no evidence of performances of the "Jupiter Symphony" during his lifetime.
In the Symphony in C major, Mozart exemplarily realized his musical "universal style," a synthesis of Italian theatrical instinct, Baroque compositional techniques, and chamber-musical fine work. The work begins like an opera overture, only to immediately suck the audience into a movement full of rhythmic energy. Mozart counters the representative opening with the Andante Cantabile, an auratic nocturne, and before the exuberant finale, he once again strikes the tone of courtly dance practice in the minuet - in order to thoroughly question its stiffness, one year before the French Revolution.

I attended a performance of this symphony in Novwmber1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis with Otto Klemperer and the Philadelphia Orchestra in The Academy of Music Philadephia. As you might guess the pace of the music was somewhat slower though not too much !

Jörg Widmann ist ein exzellenter Klarinettist, Komponist und Musiker. Er weiß, was er musikalisch haben will und zeigt hier in der Jupiter-Sinfonie einige zwingende interpretatorische Ideen, die ich sehr gut und überzeugend finde. Dennoch frage ich mich, warum er jetzt auch noch dirigieren muss. Warum fühlen sich so viele Instrumentalisten, Sänger, Komponisten (Justus Frantz, Placido Domingo...) etc., die es nicht studiert haben (und immer wieder technisch auch gar nicht können...), dazu berufen, irgendwann auch dirigieren zu müssen? Ich bekomme den Eindruck, damit soll eine Omnipräsenz generiert werden, die auf mich letztendlich aufdringlich, unersättlich und eitel wirkt.
Ich muss mich selbst etwas korrigieren und für meine erste Reaktion schelten. Als ich dieses Video hier fand, habe ich Jörg Widmann, den ich als Komponisten und Klarinettisten schon lange kenne und im höchsten Maße schätze, zum ersten Mal dirigieren sehen und die oben geschriebene Reaktion gehabt. Nun habe ich einige Videos mehr mit ihm als Dirigent gesehen, auch Videos von Proben und seiner Probenarbeit. Man kann zwar schon sagen, dass manche seiner Bewegungen nicht sehr schön aussehen und im akademischen Sinne als "technisch falsch" beurteilt werden würden (z.B. wenn er die Arme bei den Zählzeiten so hochreißt, statt nach unten zum Schlagpunkt zu kommen...), aber über mehrere Werke hinweg sehe ich nun doch, dass er durchaus ein großes Bewegungsrepertoire hat, das immer von seiner sehr unmittelbaren musikantischen Espressivität inspiriert wird und die Musiker durchaus inspirieren kann. Er ist doch als vielfach begabter Künstler sehr eins mit sich selbst und mit der Musik in allem, was er tut. Sehr interessant ist das Probenvideo mit dem Münchner Kammerorchester (th-cam.com/video/rLNLNT70eZs/w-d-xo.html), wo die Musiker*innen auch zu Wort kommen und ausdrücken, wie sehr sie es zu schätzen wissen, dass er ihnen als Dirigent viel Raum für Atmen, Freiheit etc. schenkt, dabei aber auch sehr genau weiß, was er hören will. Ich finde Widmanns Fähigkeit, Musik sehr unmittelbar im Moment zu erleben, obwohl er sie auch bis ins Detail intellektuell durchdrungen hat, jede Note zu erklären können scheint, sehr bewundernswert. Und letztlich finde ich auch diese Aufführung der Jupitersinfonie unglaublich frisch und zwingend, unkonventionell, im Moment neu erfunden, wozu er aber wohl sehr akribisch geprobt haben wird.
@@FranzKaernBiederstedt Waren Bach, Beethoven, Mozart begnadete Dirigenten? Dort oblag es Ihnen vom Clavier aus zu "dirigieren". Herr Widmann schafft auf jeden Fall eine wunderbare Interpretation. Ich bin von Ihm begeistert!

I know very little about music formally. Does that thrilling sequence which begins at about 28:07 and runs for about ten seconds have a particular musicological name?
Hi, Bob! The Symphony was written in the typical sonata form (exposition, development and recapitulation). At your mentioned time code the piece is busy with the development where the composers are harmonically free and often use modulations into different tones. At the sequence at 28:07 you find descending sequences, which sound like modulations. Best regards from WDR Sinfonieorchester.
It's a real circle of fifths, where the dominants occur as "phrygian" augmented sixth chords. It has later been labelled "jazz"

I disagree. It's perfection! Perfect tempo as per Mozart's manuscript! It's masterful and Woferl would be proud! Each and every phrase is expertly and fully articulated and it's wonderful to hear Mozart's delicious counterpoint perfectly directed, executed, and brilliantly brought to life! No voice is buried or muffled under Maestro Widmann's brilliant direction. I love the flutes and woodwinds in this piece and they're articulated perfectly, epecially at this perfect, brisk, vivacious tempo. The 2nd vln's and vla's parts are magical as well! The fugue finale is the cherry on top of this gorgeous pie! K551 has never sounded so good! Maestro Widmann truly understands Mozart and he is one of few in my opinion. Zubin Mehta understood Mozart as well, Szell, sometimes Bernstein (though Bernstein better understood Mahler), Von Karajan, Muti, Marriner, and a few others, but this is supremely superior! Listening to this is a humbling experience and makes me glad to be alive and to be a musician! 🥰🥰🦋🦋🎻🎻It deeply saddens me to remember that this was his final symphony, however, the glorious complexity and majesty of the composition immediately lifts my spirits! How blessed we were to have had Mozart at all!

In my opinion, it was a bad performance . Very fast and in a hurry . Mozart has its own harmony and order in fast movements . He is never in a hurry like Mendelssohn !
