Thank you forever for recommending Korean sunscreens! I started using the newly reformulated Dear Klairs Light Airy SPF (now they are calling it the All Day Airy sunscreen). Maybe I’m paranoid because of the scandal when they had to pull it from their shelves, but I don’t know if it works as well? Like I still have some occasional redness on my face and I’m not sure if that’s just because it is summer in the Deep South and I need to reapply more, or what. I also layer it with the Revision Intellishade SPF mineral foundation so like, I feel like I should look like Snow White. I still have to use up 2 bottles of the Dear Klairs but maybe I’ll switch to the Beauty of Joseon next!

An important thing to note: SPF doesn't add up/accumulate. For instance, if you put on SPF 30 sunscreen and then put on an SPF 15 moisturizer or foundation (moisturizer goes before sunscreen btw) you're not going to get SPF 45 worth of UV protection. You still get 30.

I'm all here for the Korean sunscreens (I use Scinic myself) but admittedly am skeptical after that whole controversy a few years back when a bunch of the Korean sunscreens were exposed for not actually having sun protection. At the time I was using that centella sunscreen that you yourself had recommended. No wonder the formula felt so easy and clean lol. I realize it wasn't the fault of the brands as they were duped into believing whatever ingredient did indeed have sun protection, but now I'm skeptical whenever the formula feels too good to be true (i.e. no cast, no irritation, etc.)

    • @carolinasandoval2542

I feel the exact same way!! I also tried the one he recommended that ended up not being what it was supposed too and it was so amazing I was bummed. I’m now trying the Madagascar Centella Skin 1004 (the one with the blue packaging) and it is soo great as far as texture and zero white cast but I can’t help but be skeptical that it’s even working because it’s so great:/

I think we should be skeptical about any sunscreen brand, not just the Korean controversy. I've heard about a variety of brands, American or European, that don't match what it says on the bottle too. Also just in general, I'm skeptical about American products based on vids I've seen. 😞😞😞 This message is to everyone of course, I'm sorry if this comes off as fear mongering. I'm saying this bc no one really talks about the other controversies. Its always Korea, Korea when we should be aware of everything 😅

As someone who is naturally very sweaty, I find that sunscreens that protect well are the sweat and water resistant ones even if the spf number in itself isn't the highest. My fave sunscreens include Avene intense protect spf50, Holika holika aloe soothing waterproof suncream spf50, Dr g mild green sun up spf50, Missha cicadin sunmilk spf50, with honorable mentions being Garnier hydra24 spf50 and Paula's choice daily moisturizing lotion spf30. I wanted to like Paula's choice extra care non greasy spf50 because it was really sweat resistant and had nice texture BUT the oxybenzone in it sensitized my skin SO MUCH 😭😭😭😭😭😭

Such as ACO, Vichy, La Roche-Posay etc. One super interesting one is the Swedish EVY Technology that came up with a very innovative solution that lasts for 6+ hours. I'd love to see a review of Japanese sunscreens! I've fallen in love with a few, and same with Korean sunscreens. Rohto Mentholatum gel sunscreen (with a pump) has been my current favorite, but anessa, biore, and Nivea also make great ones.

    • @sophiewelsh8619
      @sophiewelsh8619 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

He's said in a few comments that he's not very familiar with Japanese ones. Maybe I just live in a different corner of the skincare community to Hyram's, but I'm shocked because even though Korean skincare has been much trendier, I thought that when it came to sunscreens, Japanese ones had been hyped up just as much as Korean ones for years now. It's hard to even talk about SPF without someone bringing up Biore or Canmake, or others.
I think my fave so far is the Rohto lavender-tinted one! It dries down completely on my skin, so I don't worry about it rubbing off, and the finish is just *chef's kiss.* And the tint isn't strong either.

I've been using this: Dr. Sheth's Ceramide & Vitamin C Sunscreen - 50 gm. It's an indian brand of sunscreen which I order from Distacart. It can pill if using other products and go right in with the sunscreen so I wait until my serum has absorded before applying this sunscreen. I was hoping Hyram can look into this one and see how good it is. The ingredient list is in INCIDecoder if anyone is curious.

Oh, this is the same brand my friend recommended to me. She told me the cleansing balm is good and affordable. So I tried it and loved it. It's comparable to Banila Co. Cleansing balm pink tub just a little more clumpy but still able to melt away my heavy makeup. I saw this sunscreen but wasn't sure if it's good or not since I'm using the Supergoop unseen sunscreen and the matte one. Now I'm sure it's going to be my next purchase. I'm going to restock the cleansing balm and buy this sunscreen as well. Thanks Hyram! ❤

  • @Mintzik

With you on the Korean ones, I swear by Etude House Mild Airy Finish SPF50 because it's broad-spectrum, absorbs in and looks completely matte, even works as sort of a primer as it delays oiliness for me. Been staving off the sunburn for years with it. Though, despite your reservations, the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen would be up there on my list is it weren't so hideously expensive and only SPF 30 anywhere I find it in the UK, we don't get the full Supergoop range here and paying nearly £40 for a tiny bottle of SPF30? Nah. I can get the EH for less than half that (though I'm finding it harder to find and scared it's being discontinued). For my body though I just grab any well rated chemist or big name brand like Garnier or Nivea as I'm not so bothered about the heavier formulas for my arms, chest etc. and they are very effective and more economical.

My all time sunscreen that I religiously continue to buy and use daily is mineral snscreen by colorscience they are a bit pricey but honestly worth it. I found it is great for my sensitive, acne prone skin plus their formula does not have a white cast in it! They have a milky creamy formula and also sell a powder version I prefer the milky cream version. I have yet to try a korean sunscreen I am tempted but I am just not sure how my sensitive skin will respond to it which makes me nervous. Coorscience though has some amazing products for sun protection!

This was SO needed. Because of the SPF lawsuits, I was looking for a video for some alternatives and this is PERFECT! $13 for Beauty of Joseon? That’s about the same or even cheaper than most USA sunscreens. Also, for white cast, I found that if you just keep dabbing and blotting it, it should go away. They have very strong protections and they focus more on the actual uva and uvb filters more than the bells and whistles ingredients like antioxidant ingredients, plant extract, etc.. Eucerin Oil Control Face Sun Gel-Cream SPF 50+ (European) is the absolute best sunscreen for oily skin. It legit leaves a natural dry touch finish, is water and sweat resistant, fragrance free and has a UVA-PF higher than the EU recommendation. And personally I would love to hear your thoughts on brazilian sunscreens if you can get your hands on those (no idea how available they are to buy online outside of Brazil lol), specially from the brands Sallve and Creamy. I always get curious about what the influencers from other countries I follow would think of those ☺

So informative! I use mineral sunscreen on my face daily religiously. However I'm a runner and on my runs I find that chemical sunscreens work better so that I don't look like Zuckerberg or that I have milk running down my whole body. Not ideal but so far the protection seems on point. My biggest ick is how hard it is to wash off my body!! I literally use three types of body wash every time to scrub and although the sunscreen itself seems gone after that, the residual smell is still sort of there. Ugh. If anyone has tips for washing off sunscreen from the body, I'm all ears.

I’m curious about everyone’s thoughts on serum/liquid sunscreens. I’ve seen a few now and it seems as if they’re becoming more popular, but I’ve never tried and don’t know how I feel about them in terms of effectiveness.
Also, I’ve got to be honest, I really hate the demonizing of chemical sunscreens. When I first got into skincare every influencer made chemical sunscreens sound SO TERRIBLE. After a few years now into my skincare journey, I realize this couldn’t be further from the truth and I can’t stand how influencers continue to drive this narrative that they’re so awful. My dry skin can’t handle the drying experience of mineral sunscreens and there’s some truly great chemical sunscreens out there. My personal fave- Bondi Sands! So if mineral isn’t working for you, don’t let anyone sway you away from trying chemical!

I like to use normal sunscreen on my face before make up, then an SPF foundation and I top it off with SPF powder + spf setting spray and touch up with the setting spray/powder throughout the day. Would be cool to hear/see if this is an effective method for keeping my SPF up while still being able to wear my base makeup (on the days that I do wear base make up).
