I have a Domane SL6 Pro which has front and rear ISO. I purchased and have several rides on the Checkpoint SL 6. I changed the tire's to G-one 40c's and went tubeless. Having ridden both bikes, you WILL NOT notice the lack of front ISO on the Checkpoint. The bike is amazingly smooth - as comfortable as my Domane is, the checkpoint is like riding on a cloud. Trek made the right call, the front ISO would unnecessarily driven the cost of the bike up. I absolutely love the bike.
So which is better ? I currently have a checkpoint point but I never really do much gravel and what I do is light gravel /dirt roads and mostly road riding . If you did 70%road and 30% light gravel witch bike would you say is better
@@JGstunts22 honestly, if I had to choose just one (road or gravel) it would be gravel. I bought my Domane (road bike) first - again, AMAZING bike, but when the road ended (turned to dirt or gravel) that is where I would turn around because I don't want to abuse the road bike or invite damage. This is why I got the gravel bike, it opens up so many more possibilities - roads that you don't care (or dare) to take your road bike on are perfectly ridable with the gravel bike. With the bigger tires the gravel bike is also a safer bet under less than ideal weather conditions.
@@MoXplant do you still rode road? Maybe I'm just not used to riding long distance on a 40c tire so that's why I. Missing the older 28c domane i had. Not that I hate it but its definitely not the same . But I guess I could always buy a spare wheel and tire setup in like a 30c for the checkpoint and then I could have both . For some reason i thought that maybe the new domane with a 38c tire would be they best of both worlds but maybe that's what I already have . I also forgot that the domane is classified as a "condition 1" bike by trek where the checkpoint is a condition 2 so it should be able to handle alot more abuse . I appreciate your insight. If you have any more leme know
sorry to be offtopic but does someone know a tool to log back into an instagram account..? I was stupid forgot my login password. I would love any tricks you can give me!
I`m just about to fit a lock out fork on my rig after 3 moths of use. A design like the RST single shock should be on every gravel bike manufacturers list. If you mainly ride gravel/offroad its a must.
Like Cannondale's Fatty, but more refined, slicker and finer. The RST is a non-cyclist's fork. My first 26" suspension fork back in 2000 was an RST. What an unbelievable piece of junk it was! It looked hideous and worked worse yet. The tolerances between the shaft and the housing were so lose the thing would wobble like mad. A year or so later bought a handsome cross-country carbon rig with a RockShox SID fork, Shimano XT wheels and a Magura HS 33 hydraulic rim brake set. What a difference!
You can check out checkpoint but you cant buy. Thank you scamdemic! I bough a checkpoint frame. Guess my spring will be about procurement of parts. All good. I will end up better in the end with custom. Any parts you guys know that are a much needed upgrade? Please. Im excited to get some good riding in this summer. Thank you fo the video. It was great. Love seeing you all out with the doggy enjoying too.
I just got a Boone 5. Wanted something to do CX and gravel riding with. Compared to Cannondale, specialized and giant bikes, I liked the Boone because of the front and rear isospeed for comfort on longer gravel rides. If I could ask one question, what would be a good tire to fit on the stock Boone 5 wheel? It came with the CX tires but I want something like the specialized pathfinder tire where it is bald in the middle for pavement but has grip on the sides for cornering. A lot of the long gravel rides I want to do have a mix of regular paved roads as well and I don't want knobbies slowing me down. And of course, I want something puncture proof. The smallest pathfinder size is a 38mm. From what I have read it seems that will fit in the Boone, but I don't know if It will work with the stock Bontrager Affinity Disc, Tubeless ready 21mm wheelset. Input would be greatly appreciated.
Hey, I want this bike for trails, gravel, and dirt paths, but I want to race in road events too. Is the checkpoint light enough and aero enough for road racing events against say Madones and Emondas? Imagine if I swap out the wheels for carbon frames and for road tires, what about then?
There seems to be a LOT of confusion (and maybe misinformation) about the actual tire clearance on this line of bikes. Is it actually 45mm? Trek's own website says 38.
Think you’re Ben, next year will feature an all-new model with isospeed in the front as the only change, perhaps some new livery as well. Also, to your point on the mid ride conversion to a SS, who would carry the tools required to do this mid-ride??
I have a Trek Crossrip 3 that i love riding and it fits me great! But it seems its a little harsh riding. I've read reviews that mentioned the"fork is brutal" Any suggestions greatly appreciated!
So I bought a 2018 Domane SL 5 Gravel. The frame was damaged and I needed it to go under warranty. Trek offered me a checkpoint frame to replace my domane. I'm not sure how I should feel about that. I was using my Domane SL 5 primarily as a road bike. Now I will effectively have a 2019 Checkpoint SL 5 and I am not sure how I should feel about that. Will it be a good road bike still when I put on my road tires or will it just be a slow heavy pig now?
EviLNox8 I purchased the Domane SL5 disc and I had buyers remorse and traded it in 2 weeks latter for the checkpoint SL5. I think the checkpoint is beaver but with the shorter chain stays it’s more nibble and feels faster. It’s weird they won’t offer you another domane frame though. The checkpoint is actually more money.
Can’t help but be distracted that the right side Isospeed decoupler has lost it’s press-fit plastic cover. Same as my Domane (I have lost the left one). With Trek charging $60 Aus for replacement pair (of course they come as a pair), how about we go halves. Seriously though, nice bike there. I’m currently on 700 x 32s so interesting to see the comparison with the Domane’s clearance for 35s
Trek was so close to making my dream bike but they fell short by neglecting to add front iso. Looks like I'll have to wait and see if they get their act together. So close, but these models fall short.
Jonathan S so they should just ignore part of what makes them the most comfortable bikes in their categories? Having ridden the latest Domane, I'd argue ISO makes a huge difference on a big day.
Because of the higher rake on the fork compared to the Boone (45mm) and Domane (48), they decided not do the front decoupler as there was barely any movement in testing. Because of this, they decided to keep costs/ weight / complexity lower and leave it out. I can tell you from experience, it feels great and I did not even notice it was not there.
Missed the opportunity to say "Trekking out the new Checkpoint" haha

I just understand why they don't add some kind of shock on the front, I mean really you can see his hands jumping up and down with the road. that really is hard on you after a few mins.
Great video thanks! I've discovered your channel since looking into a godd alrounder bike purchase, have foinf your vids to be very imformative, and great presentation. Subsacribed.
This looked like an excellent gravel bike, but the Cannondale Topstone seemed like a much better value per dollar. Got money to burn? The Trek choice is great.
This is my first road th-cam.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA and I have taken it out a handful of times and so far it is exceeding all of my expectations. I didn’t want to break the bank on a first bike and the herd is a great option for getting a fast bike with reliable components. I plan on riding this bike for many years to come. Thank you Sava!
Tom Boyle it really depends on what you are using it for but I would go with the Domane sl6. It is both lighter (not much but every gram counts) and about $200 cheaper. Unless you actually ride a lot of gravel, need a tire larger than 32c, or want the mounts for racks/bags.... the domane is the better bike and will have better resale value if you choose to upgrade or decide you want to switch
Elliott Baldridge i am looking more for road use. I have ridden the domane sl6 and it was the better fit and more comfortable than the giant or cannondale. I agree the domane is a better fit
I don't think so unless you switch just about everything. 105/Ultegra is 11 gear cassette whereas Tiagra has a 10 gear cassette. I seem to remember this video covering it: th-cam.com/video/bu2hLK9d0IU/w-d-xo.html.
The internal cable routing meeting together on the downtube makes frame bags very limiting, no water bottle cage mounts on the bottom, bad into price. Try again Trek. Better off with a Surly, Salsa or Specialized
Except the high end trek bike, which sometimes cost more than a car, every other trek looks absolute trash with trashiest component compared to the price

I appreciate your honesty especially in comparing the Diverge. That helps me make the choice.

I seriously lust after this bike!!!
i am buying one ....
Superb review, and excellent comparison across the line. B-roll at the end was a nice touch.
Domane was on my list, this replaces it but I'll be waiting for the front isospeed. Useful review, thanks.
Is it fair to say that these bikes are hybrid bikes with a road bike frame ?

Just stick a RedShift ShockStop suspension stem. It works like a charm
Weight weenies may not approve due to the massive weight. I have one on my gravel bike.
One of my fav presenter. :D
Yeah
Agree verry professional, clear not hyped.
Shouldn't this be called a "NOMADE"?!
Motobecane already has dibs on that name
What a missed opportunity

How about DAEMON?
Just bought a diverge thanks for the recommendations
Superb review - very well rounded
Nice review, thanks! Fun ride!!
So close to perfect. Front future shock and a BB designed for 30mm spindles would have made this a must have.

can anyone tell me the name of the attacks for the front forks that I see at minute 0:15?
thank you
Great video aa usual. The still picture of the light blue colored bike. What front bags are on the forks? Thanks
Hiya, thanks for the kind comment! I'm not sure on the bag, but I've asked. Liam
I've done some detective work and they look like the Salsa Anything Bags. Liam
@BikeRadar ah ha well thank you for checking on that my good man. I appreciate it. And thanks for all the great videos

What did you think about the geometry? Is it the same are your other bikes? larger?

En mi primera salido cuando use los piñones 10,12 y 14 encuentro mucho ruido, parece que la cadena rosa con los piñones, como se puede corregir esto?
Nice landscapes. Where is it?
I like this presenter!! Good job👍
Thanks Mr D. It's fun!
Could this bike be used for touring? Thanks!
Yes, this would make a really good touring bike!
Trek is never late. Trek is always on time, if anything the others are too early.
A Trek bike is never late, nor is it early. It arrives precisely when it means to!
There seems to be a LOT of confusion (and maybe misinformation) about the actual tire clearance on this line of bikes. Is it actually 45mm? Trek's own website says 38.

Nice review, pity Trek don’t offer higher spec components on their ALR versions. Not everyone loves carbon.
Does the Checkpoint run big? The bike shop is suggesting a 56 when I am 6'2..
love it can it be use as a road bike any size for 5ft 3 what the cost I'm a beginner
I checked for the 2020 aluminium models to find out the fork crown headlight mount is missing. Really, Trek???
Guts riding in the snow with small tires.
Superb review..looks promising
I have a Trek Crossrip 3 that i love riding and it fits me great! But it seems its a little harsh riding. I've read reviews that mentioned the"fork is brutal" Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

You won't notice the lack of ISO, it's too small to pick up the difference
Jonathan S the same way you don't notice ISO on the Domane or Boone?

which is the thru axle standard on this bike? 142x12 rear + 100x12 front?
tire clearance is nice but should have stick to domane geo, in size 56 checkpoint has 10mm longer reach
Nice trip!
Does Trek has grey colour checkpoint ALR4? I am planning to buy post lockdown.
Look on the trek website.....
I actually had my derailleur destroyed by a stick. Had to convert MTB to a Fixie to get home. Like this bike for versatility.
Andrew Hoffman false! it‘s a singlespeed then
Forgot to compare to the Trek 920?
what front lights are you guys running in the group shots here?
The lights are Bontrager Flare City and Flare R (rear). Very small, powerful rechargeable daytime visibility lights.
That looked like a wildly fun ride. Maybe you could post location :-)
Moy MacGill around Boulder I’m almost certain.
Im thinking of doing some BikePacking, but afraid to do that on a carbon frame.
Just get the Checkpoint ALR.
About to order my first Trek. I'm 5'11" which puts me somewhat in the middle of sizing. Any thoughts or suggestions? 56? 58?
They haven't included the front iso speed because they know it doesn't really make any significant difference, so why bother.
Allan Phillips shhh don't ruin it for them, they're drinking the marketing Kool Aid
Exactly. One less thing to go wrong as far as I'm concerned!
Please who knows where I can order THIS [or any other super gravel bike] internationally to West Africa
This looks pretty good but I still like the Cannondale Slate better.
Waiting for the price of the aluminium tiagra version. ...
This looked like an excellent gravel bike, but the Cannondale Topstone seemed like a much better value per dollar. Got money to burn? The Trek choice is great.
Pick up mine in 2 days 😀
And, how's it been?
pretty heavy, but nice. I will keep my Kona Jake with Single speed crank conversion.
Too bad the iso speed feature is only available on the carbon frames. My car isn't even worth that much

Ah Boulder the cycling Mecca
I am Boone owner and I don’t think front isospeed make that big of difference......specially when trek try to build a ‘ budget ‘ bike......
Can I run 650b wheels on it?
I am running a 650 x 48 with no problem (Compass Switchback Hill)
I have the ALR 4. The ALR 3 has a slightly narrower clearance and was told it would not accept the wider tire.
Can this take 650B as well then? Just took a look at Trek's site and there wasn't any specific mention of it...
No reason it couldn't, could probably run some WTB Horizon's
Compact crankset, 1 to 1 lowest gear ratio... a lower gear ratio would be better
This bloke seems less interested every time a new video comes out.
He seems weary of the hype.
I am debating on the domane sl6 disc or the checkpoint sl6. Any opinions?

I really want this bike, but I have to pay an extra 500 bucks to import it into my country :(
Sorry, I'm holding out for Trek's dirt road bike.
Thurston Howell III sarcasm? Lol
Yes lol
I'm waiting for pebble bikes ..going to be a big improvement over gravel
How do you guys think the ALR version compares to the new Cannondale Topstone?
I know it has a full Shimano groupset rather than mixing and matching parts, e.g., Topstone 105 has a FSA crank...
I love my gravel bike.... but I own a fat bike for a reason. A bike like this has no place on snow.
no front iso...on a gravel bike...
I want one,
A nice bike. Not as beautiful as some, but handsome.
Anyone know if groupset in Trek checkpoint 4 Tiagra groupset can be upgraded? To 105/ultegra?
I don't think so unless you switch just about everything. 105/Ultegra is 11 gear cassette whereas Tiagra has a 10 gear cassette. I seem to remember this video covering it: th-cam.com/video/bu2hLK9d0IU/w-d-xo.html.
Is there anything Ben likes? Cup half empty type guy
Is bikeradar becoming gravelbikeradar?
Deoo Haha. Well said
15 kg al frame?? -_-
1507 gram. 1,507 kg.
Specialized doesn't have a baggage carrier.
The internal cable routing meeting together on the downtube makes frame bags very limiting, no water bottle cage mounts on the bottom, bad into price. Try again Trek. Better off with a Surly, Salsa or Specialized
Dropper post?
On alloy it's possible on carbon with the seatmast it is not.
Except the high end trek bike, which sometimes cost more than a car, every other trek looks absolute trash with trashiest component compared to the price
Too many variables make a review if your not a champion athlete
Shitty press fit bottom bracket, check!!!
I love trek but that's way too much for a bike
Buy a trail bike
my Specialized Sequoia eats these things for breakfast.
I just don’t like the trek look. Even on this one.
Trek is overrated it was popular when Armstrong didn’t get caught yet
3400 pounds, that's Hella light!
Thats insane not in the budget!lol
Man this guy is such a trek fanboy
That's a CX.
with 440 chain stays, not even close..
Ask any hipster. There is no declarable gravel bike
Just buy a specialized diverge
Chihiro Gustafson what’s the advantage of the diverge, besides the future shock?
Jonathan D. A threaded bottom bracket
aluminum version only. Carbon is press fit
Nice trip!
