I think Blake and any other Nekos, or whatever you wanna call other animal combos with the ears, would look weird without that set of human ears if they didn't have hair to cover up that area of their face, just saying.
This was the episode that convinced me that I love this show. Character's are amazingly portrayed, Penny is shown as extremely strong and still mysterious, I fell in love because of this episode.
For me, it was the two middle episodes of Jaune's arc. Say what you will about Jaune not being fit to lead or even just not being a good person, but that rant about how he's tired of being useless and wants to live up to his family's legacy but at the same time feels the need to accomplish it on his own was one of the most human moments in this show in my opinion. Then in the following episode, we see the growth of Ruby as a leader when she consoles Jaune, which we really don't get enough of in this show.
While yeah, Blake's human ear don't make too much sense, I think there's some reasons they did it. For one, it would be a little too obvious if they introduce the Faunus, have her get all pissed off at Cardin for being racist, and to have her just so happen to have the area where her ears would normally be always covered by her hair. It helps a little bit to keep the surprise for the reveal (not too much since it's still fairly obvious) by having fans point out that she has a pair of human ears. Another could be that it's just paying homage to the cat girl trope where they often have two sets of ears for completely no reason, an example that I found with a quick google search is Asobi ni Iku yo!. Also, they're mainly a company that focuses on comedy, so I wouldn't put it past them to just include two sets of ears because they thought it would be funny.
Trust me, each volume gets better and better. I'm glad you guys are reacting to RWBY, even I couldn't believe I didn't see it 3 years ago, and saw it since last year before volume 3.
The way I think about the Faunus is that they're humans with animal traits. They've got everything a normal human body has with an added animal part. So no Eric, I don't think it's weird. :p
Love Monkey-King's nunchuck bo shotguns!!! Best weapon ever!!! And Penny is a BAMF!!! I don't think she kills anyone though. I think this series operates on the logic that every fighter in this world has a protective aura that protects from fatal blows. Otherwise Yang would be a murderer in her trailer right? Also, Ruby explained that she has an uncle who is a well-known hunter, who also has a Scythe, I can't recall if we know his name yet but it's at least been hinted!
I think you guys are amongst the very few going through the series this year that is picking up on the little things like Qrow's message to Ozpin at the end. Loving the reactions, keep 'em coming!
Penny is a badass! I love her weapon! Qrow is the Ruby's uncle and teacher at Signal Academy. She speaks all this in the first episode. I loved all reactions for the Vol. 1 and I can't wait for the next one!
About Blake having cat ears and normal ears, it was a glitch from the animating software they had and forgot to go back in and edit them out. Once they realized it, it just became canon that faunus with ear traits have both human ears as well as their faunus trait ears.
O and that is a backpack Penny's wearing FYI. Not really spoilers just letting you know that's her weapon. A lot of people confuse that part but you can see her not wearing it in some scenes.
Just to let you guys know, Penny's fighting style was based off Namine in Monty Oum's incomplete series called Dead Fantasy. However, both of the Penny's and Namine's fighting forms are a reference to the Murakumo Units in an anime looking video game series called "Blazblue"
I definitely laughed at the "fiery bitch" bit. Don't forget to watch the World of Remnant videos as they come up on Rooster Teeth's RWBY playlist. They are only about 2 minutes but they provide good world building.

Regarding ruby&yangs family (with some extra info not yet directly stated in the volume but I wouldn't really call it spoilers): Their Dad and their Uncle (Qrow, mentioned in ep 1) are teachers at Signal on the Island Patch. Their Mom is a Huntress and wasn't really mentioned yet, though infos about her can be found in the trailers, the opening and the soundtrack. Yang has their fathers last name while Ruby has their mothers (so aparently they are not married/didn't take one last name/idk how things work in remnant) And yes, Sun Wukong is heavily based one, well, Sun Wukong and you got the penny beeing inspired by pinocchio, even tho she is the one pulling strings
The only thing you guys would know about Ruby & Yang's family (excluding their uncle) would be based on the gravestone in Ruby's trailer. I shall say no more!

The fact that Blake (and other Faunus) has 2 sets of ears has never been explained, so we can only speculate. The most common speculation is that Faunus are "humans" with animal parts and the have night visions. Faunus even has traits of the animal they are based on. Ex Blake eats the tuna a lot and sun eats bananas
Penny is my second favourite character in the series. You got the guess right with the Pinocchio Inspiration. She is cute, adorable and in nearly every scene she is in.... she is a adorable.

A funny little detail, in the commentary for this episode, at around 12:00 one of the directors (Miles Luna) shouts "YOU BASTARD!!" because he believed it was way too early for a character to be powerful enough to cut a vehicle in half. However, he was quick to forgive it. In his words, Penny was allowed to because she's cool and powerful.

You guys should watch the 1st 3 World of Remnant before watching Volume 2 since it explains some things that may be confusing for you guys in this show.
I think the sooner they watch the volume 2 World of Remnants, the better. That way they can stop speculating on the rules of this universe and focus on plot speculation.
Volume 2 has alot of elements like Dust usage and Aura/Semblances which isn't explained very well through out the volume.knowing the details of these things would make them even more immersed in the story and not keep on asking questions mid-reactions. With the communications tower being important they need to watch Continents to understand the CCT.

The thing about Faunus is that they each have 1 trait of an animal, they're not complete mixes of other animals. Blake has Cat ears. Sun has a tail.

I believe Faunas just have an extra animal appendage. The Rabbit Girl that Cardin picked on also had rabbit ears as well as human ears.
A faunas is a person born with a single animalistic trait. You could have cat ears, a monkey tail, the ability to produce webs or even just gills.

You guys should watch the 1st 3 World of Remnant before watching Volume 2 since it explains some things that may be confusing for you guys in this show.
I think the sooner they watch the volume 2 World of Remnants, the better. That way they can stop speculating on the rules of this universe and focus on plot speculation.
Volume 2 has alot of elements like Dust usage and Aura/Semblances which isn't explained very well through out the volume.knowing the details of these things would make them even more immersed in the story and not keep on asking questions mid-reactions. With the communications tower being important they need to watch Continents to understand the CCT.
