Another trick for subtracting is *KCC.* This means keep change change. *Keep the first number, Change the sign, Change the other number's sign.* So for example 3 - (-2) Keep the 3. Change - to +. And change -2 into 2. The new equation is 3+2 which is 5. DON'T let this confuse you from KCF. Which is for fractions. As long as you remember KCC is for subtraction with negative numbers you should be good. Hope this helps if anyone still needs another way to remeber. My teacher couldn't teach this because it confused people so I really hope I didn't confuse you.
Edit: another thing is that you should keep the sign of the number with the bigger absolute value.

@@kit.ty_cat The answer you got is correct! Just make sure to change your subtration symbol into an addition symbol.
-8 - (-3)(add the opposite of the symbols)
-8 + 3
=-5
