The Manacles rocks, Cornwall. Above and Below.

  • The Manacles, an area of reef approximately one square mile, lying to the southern approach to Falmouth, has been responsible for over 100 shipwrecks with over 1000 lives lost.
    There is no comparable reef on the entire south coast of Britain that has caused such a loss of shipping.
    Even larger ships which should have been many miles offshore seem to have become entangled with this quite lethal mass of rock, and the whole reef is still littered in ships remains of all ages.
    The area is now marked by a bell bouy marking the outer most safe passage.
    Shot during summer 2018, in this video we go down on some of the rarest, calmest days of the summer to dive around the rocks and then to view them from the air.

    Nice to see them up close. I've ever only seen them from a distance. Falmouth beaches for example.

    Nice one Ben, another great video. Go careful near Culdrose - sometimes weekend flying too in that area! Get Vin to give me a shout for their contact if you’re nearby again, you tell them where you are and they’ll stay clear 👍

      Theres a lot more diving videos I have uploaded using better cameras for the underwater shots, although filming underwater like this is always tricky on your own !

    Northampton bsac dived on the manacles for many years in the seventies and early eighties,we raised 5 cannons and a rudder from the HMS Primrose, great to see the area again from the air and underwater,thanks for sharing this 😊

      No problem Mick. I have dived the Primrose many times and found several smaller artefacts from it. I also have a large bronze rudder bracket, the part which fits the stern of the ship which I found further to the North (admiralty stamped just like the bits found on site). All droited . I should do a video of it some day .

    Ben have you had the chance again to do a video on The John shipwreck again to show Anchors from ship. Thanks as we love your videos. Love to have family history and pics of what is left.

      Ha yeah that’s interesting. Sadly there is very little wreck material left to show , but I do have what’s there filmed which I will put in another of my videos at some point.

      Cheers Phil. We have dived the site of the John quite a lot although very little remains. There is a pile of 3 anchors and some other bits from the wreck.
      I have been meaning to head back and film another video about the wrecks with the greatest loss of life on the manacles, of which this is number one !

    Hi Ben thank you for the upload this was fascinating can I recommend though getting a polarising filter for your video camera, as it would cut through the reflection on the sea and enable you to film down through our crystal clear waters! All the best and hello from Falmouth.

    • @BenoCam
      @BenoCam  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Linda. That was a few years ago now and I do have some much better cameras and a better laptop now for editing so I can make the quality of new videos much better. Still not got a filter though I must admit ! I shall look into it for the next one. I have made a few wreck diving videos if they are of interest ... all on my channel. 😊

      Haha thank you. I used to do a lot of flying but I’m struggling to find the time to fit it all in at the moment as I have been working a lot and am doing up a house. Never enough time for playing but it will all come back when life settles down a bit. I still have all the Paramotor gear.

    Why do they not reduce these dangerous rocks to a safe level as they have done outside a busy port in Canada. 100 ships and 1000 lives lost so far on the Manacles is far too many

    • @BenoCam
      @BenoCam  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Removing them would be impossible as there is too big a rock mass underneath but I’m suprised they did not build a lighthouse on the area years ago. There hasn’t been a wreck there now for many years due to modern navigation systems.
