How to Make a Bezel and Set a Cabochon - Part Two

  • Here's part two on creating a bezel and setting a cab. The basic premise is on soldering a bezel cup to a ring shank and then setting the stone. But, there is so much more included! I've added sweat soldering a pierced overlay to a ring shank, how to use a ring bender with thick ring shanks, how to use a ring mandrel, multiple options for squaring up the ends of ring shanks as well as how to create straight, flat edges on sheet, annealing, making a guard for your vise and a lot more information!
(BTW, the ring shank ended up being 11g.)

Miter Cutting Vise and Jig. I recommend buying the pricier vise. I have a cheap version and the expensive (French, I believe) version and the difference is night and day. I don't use the cheap one at all - the machining is terrible and it sticks. Maybe yours isn't a lemon. I don't want to buy yet, another one! So, here's the link to the one I like: www.riogrande....

thank you so much for offering these videos Nancy! They are so well done and so, so helpful besides entertaining! So interesting that you mention allowing your annealed piece to cool naturally. I've always wondered if that quench leaves the piece a little harder & now you've answered that question for me. Thank you for having such a good heart!

I haven't done any soldering yet, but I'm doing my research into it. I found part one and this part very informative. I very much appreciate you sharing your expertise. I have been playing with wire and feel the urge to make something beyond wire jewelry.
Do you have suggestions for what basics I will need to get started making bezel cups and ring shanks? I have most of the files and sanding papers already.
I envy your studio space. I don't have that luxury.

lol Great opening. Love your hair this way too. While you were using your torch, I kept watching the flame as you turned the charcoal brick and it was right next to (nearly touching) the dial on your crockpot. I kept saying "you're gonna melt it" half laughing), but for some odd reason you didn't hear me. lol Love this piece. It's beautiful...especially since its custom made. With this setting, is it secure enough to wear it all the time...with all the usual bumps and wacks on things...and hold the cabochon without it popping out? Thank you so much for sharing all these wonderful videos with us. I've learned so much with you at the head of the classroom. :)

Nancy, with a stone that is prone to cracking like moonstone, would you still use the hammer setting method? I recently made a ring with a beautiful moonstone but while lightly tapping, the stone developed a crack. Should I just use a bezel pusher and just muscle it into place? Anytime I've tried that it seems to not turn out as seamless as when lightly hammering. Thanks!

    Hi Nancy
Love the ring. I'm an amateur silver and gold smith. I live in geelong Victoria Australia. I find it so hard to locate products cheaply here. Tools are expensive. And the chemicals aren't easily found. Wish we had habour freight here. Sound wonderful. Was wondering if I could use borax instead of boric acid to make fire scale shield. The recipe I have is denatured alcohol and boric acid? Thank you love your work, videos and whit.

I keep wondering why there isn't much talk of practicing in cheaper metal (brass or copper). I am doing this now and struggling with things like sawing it and getting the color match brass and copper solder to flow, etc. I worked with wire for a decade so I understand different metal is different (harder, stronger, softer, more workable, etc) but is the bottom line here that we need to practice sawing and soldering in silver and just accept the cost? Thank you for your videos btw, they are by far my favorite in learning. I even put them on in the background during my many struggles lol

What kind of solder pic do you use to spread the solder in the piece? Titanium or tungsten? I bought a butane torch soldering starter set from Rio and they included three titanium pics- them I find out I can’t pic solder with those🙄
-BTW, you inspire me! I want to emulate this ring design!

Hi Nancy, you said in the first half of this vid that if you let the cross locks naturally they'll be annealed and easier to bend back into shape. Does this mean I should be quenching my crosslocks after heating to avoid them being annealed? Or is it one of those things that can't really be helped and they will become annealed anyways and does this matter? I hope you understand my ramblings? -Kim (aka Apple).

I forgot to mention that I love the magnetic leather strips for your bench vice. That's brilliant! Where did you get those nice thick pieces of leather? I want to do that to mine and also a pair of pliers for straightening wire, but maybe I'll have to glue the leather directly on them.
