Scrum master isn't a scam... little companies don't want to pay because they don't understand the importance. Many years ago I offered my service for free if no profit was made. I made them go from $300,000 net profit to $3 Million net in one year! I was paid $150,000 flat for annual, plus a bonus percentage of the profits that we won't discuss here but it was more than the salary.
In real life the SCRUM master is the person who schedules the daily stand up meetings and prints out the burn down charts. It's a job that a well trained Golden Retriever could do.
Nicely done. Having done film and theatre directing, I see this job as falling into the Scrum master category. When done right a director is not the boss but a great facilitator, knowing how to get the best out of the cast and crew -- except a director does have a real investment in the project so it might not be exactly the same. Use the sprint retrospective meeting to discuss what went well and what didn’t. The team needing a cushion for the engineers can be used as a topic of what didn’t go well and can be discussed about what can be worked on.

Yea, what you are explaining is more what your work culture and bad management does. A lot of bad managers, bad leadership like to abuse scrum and use it to take advantage of teams and developers. Scrum is still relatively a new concept many companies are still adopting into their culture, so you’re going to have people say “scrum” and “agile” a lot in conversations but not really actually practice it. It’s kind of a buzz word some professionals use to make them seem progressive but they don’t practice it. They care about results.

The Agile Framework is just a fancy name and chart for the way things have been running for over a decade now, and Scrum Master is a fancy title for middle management (with no real responsibilities).
