I do enjoy shirtless scenes of hot anime men in my otome games, but that's definitely not what draws me into playing the games. It's the stories that take me away from reality and allow me to connect to various characters who I would otherwise not be drawn towards in real life. I enjoyed your breakdown of fanservice in otome games! ❤️

It's the same for me! I would never say no to a hot guy, but first and foremost he needs a hot character in an engaging story

I believe if it's both an element you enjoy and expect to be there that it must be part of why you are drawn in. Not the whole, but undeniably a part of value. And why consider it as anything less?

I find fan service in games targeted towards women are sometimes more sexy because it is more mental and not just visual.

I believe the core difference between fanservice for male audiences and otome media. Is that media made for guys dominates the cultural landscape. If your a man looking for fanservice you can just watch any piece media. While women have to actively search for stuff that caters to us while. While dealing with men mock denigrating the stuff we like just because it doesn't pander to men.

I'm a man and I agree with your points. I actually roll my eyes at the amount of female fanservice around. There's only so many times I can be subjected to boobs and ass shots before it stops being arousing and just becomes tedious and distracting. Seeing male fanservice actually feels refreshing at times. Especially when their bodies look this good, lol.

Good discussion! Reminds me of this old discussion where a guy said there's plenty of shirtless men so girls get fanservice too and someone pointed out that most of that stuff in mainstream media isn't actually for women but for men? And they posted a picture of Hugh Jackman on two magazine covers, 1 as wolverine in a magazine marketed to men where he's shirtless and muscly and badass and 1 as just a normal nice sweet looking guy in a magazine for women. Because really what most women want is a kind, nice guy who will treat them well while men want the big muscly guy to imagine as themselves being like that. I dunno if that was a good summary lol But yeah, mental fanservice or the imagining of a romance is usually more important to women so that's what games aimed for us focus on. Although we can also like steamy and sexy scenes and there's nothing wrong with that. Gimme more fanservice for girls! xp

Such a good point! I think that's why female fan service is not often payed attention to, because it's not as easily to pinpoint and detected as make fan service
Yes, that might apply to most girls: first mental/emotional fan service, second the six pack 😆

@@magnadramon0068To me it is 50/50. I would love more than a shirtless guy. I know doing female fanservice is hard as for women there are many things that society sexualises, breast, tighs, ass but for men it is pretty much just a six pact.
But i have seen a few content that psuhes male sexualiation. Not just men being shirtless but wearing clothing that bring out features. Drawing male characters with big pecs and maybe an even bigger ass, thick/muscular tighs and etc. Unfortunately those things are uncommon well they are a bit more common in yaoi and pretty much rare outside of it.
I don't know why but the fanservice i see in a lot of Japanese media doesn't stand out to me. Like shirtless men with hardly defined features are meh.
To me romance or a nice male character isn't a must but i would like for the male character to be interesting and for the story to be interesting.
I feel like that would not happen any time soon especially when men think female fanservice is an overdress character. I remember reading a reddit post ages ago that said that used that green haired guy from inuyasha that is overly dressed as an exmaple of female fanservice.
In this context i am talked about sexualisation when refering to fanservice.
I feel like my standards of fanservice might be too high and only lead to disappointment especially since many are happy with how it is and also thlse are not what they think off when they think of female fanservice.

@sugarzblossom8168 Have you seen Free Iwatobi Swim Club? That has lots of fanservice for women. The camera often looms in on the men's bodies. Including their crotches when they wear tight speedos. Even though I'm a man, I have a good friend that's a woman and she liked lots of male fanservice, so she filled me in on a lot of what they should have. I'm in the process of writing a story that involves a badass woman getting seduced by a very handsome mostly naked man. The woman will also be very attractive but the man will be the one presented as the seductive one. This sort of thing is rarely done in fiction.

What a thoughtful discussion! I've been reading otome for 10 years, and I think other than the most important part (the story) of a good otome, is the creators respecting that women like hot guys/characters ("husbandos") as much men like busty "wifus" in their games. Nothing turns me away from otome faster then every character looking like a 9 year old girl.

By the end of this video, it got me thinking. In Western Culture, especially thanks to the Catholic Church's influence, Lust itself was very much frowned upon, especially if it was a female. Heck it's still consider taboo to have intimacy outside of marriage (I was raised Catholic in a conservative household, so I am aware of this lol). So it wouldn't surprise me that women's desires were never really talked about because of those influences that lasted centuries. Men we're basically allowed to do more than us women, so it makes since why even now there's not as much Female fan service as their is male. Otome for me, helps give us women that voice. I for one go ga-ga over seeing hot dudes. Anyway, I hope what I said made sense.
FYI, I was turning red throughout the whole video. Nothing wrong with a little skin lol. Only type of fanservice I have issue with is if a char looks 'young', that's when I start to feel uncomfortable.

I don't know the situation in Europe and America, but "fan service targeting a female audience" is quite common in Japan.
"Cupid Parasite" was the most interesting otome game I played recently. This game is a polytheistic world. So, I'm wondering what Western players, whose monotheistic Christianity is the mainstream, think of this game. Japan is a polytheistic country, and even if the main character is a god, it doesn't feel strange ...

I haven't heard anyone complaining about Cupid Parasite in that regard! Like Gillian said, most people are not really religious and Cupid Parasite references mythological gods, so no one feels offended or anything. Most people love Cupid Parasite!

I suppose many people just treat it as fantasy.
I can't speak for other people, but, for me at least, I am more wary of games that are about Christianity than games that are not about Christianity, since the games that are not about Christianity I can play as a simple fantasy story, but I am wary that the games about Christianity might not depict the Christianity well.

Yeah. I agree with all You said. Only thing, that I will add, but You barely touched on is IN OTOME *VOICE ACTING* means as half of game purpose. 😂 Especially mobile ones, where beside plot, events keeps popping up. Calls, dates, or like in MLQC *Right Beside You* stories, that are recorded mainly so guy do 'noices', but kept in 'fanservice plot', like he 'wash Your hair', or 'is drunk', or tell fairytale story.
Also side stories of guys perspective, that help You get him and his reasons more. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Small things, but in 'girly games', I agree, they are more important, than naked bodies. Dates, where You see amazing quality(seriously, I wait. Day IFI take leaf from ELEX book on character body CG, as yeah, not MOST important, but it is important, too. 😅) bodies from very close are nice, of course. But womens BIGGEST reason to get a game, as I often see(also from myself) are VA samples. 😁

I'm neutral towards fanservice as long as it fits the mood of the scene and doesn't break the immersion. A lot also depends on characters, for example, there are charas that can sport some more revealing fanservice-ish outfits and it fits their personality, but in some cases it it's so out of character so I suppose it's all about execution for me 😂
