Lindsey had it all (still does but I mean in the 70s/80s): looks, voice, guitar skills and yet he is no household name! This man should have been a star! One of the world’s biggest mysteries… Lindsey was/is awesome!

I saw Lindsey live with Fleetwood Mac in 1983 and they were fantastic but I saw him solo last October in London and he was just amazing. You are so right, he is underrated but also under-appreciated, with his vocals, his guitar work, his songwriting and his producing and arranging Stevie's songs. He is a master at his craft! Glad to see someone else show him some love!!

After hearing only the "Top 40" hits this band produced, and growing up a narrow-minded metalhead, I've always dismissed them as softish rock and never bothered to dig in to anything else from them. Only now because I'm habitually viewing your videos and being exposed to many guitarists and bands I'd never bothered with do I find out that, for instance, Fleetwood Mac can rock. Thanks for the education, Fil; you're performing a valuable service!

I can’t play a lick but love all kinds of music with a passion, love learning the technical side of how they make the magic (because non-musicians can take it for granted too easily sometimes when the whole sounds so great), and Fil’s videos are perfect for someone like me. Plus I love that he’s not embarrassed to show that he’s a fan too.

They are one of the most proficient playing bands ever. They had jaw-dropping good moments life. As Fil also pointed out, Mr. Fleetwood, Mr. Mc Vie, and especially Mr. Buckingham, they are simply superb.

To me, after the losses of Peter Green, as band leader/guitarist/vocalist, Lindsey (and Stevie) saved the band. You’re right, he’s underrated, or more accurately forgotten. Back in the day, everyone recognized his prowess on guitar. So many memorable performances.

  • @lgempet2869

Always thought Lindsey Buckingham had more talent than anyone else in Fleetwood Mac but he was overshadowed by everyone else within the band. It’s a real shame too b/c his talent deserved more exposure. He has/had a great career but his “lamp was really hidden under a basket” for too long. He could DO IT ALL unlike others in the band who’s abilities were a bit more limited in my opinion.

This performance literally sends chills up my spine. Fleetwood Mac from '75 to '80 is a lot of my favorite music of all time. Yes Lindsey stands out on this song but all 5 of them are so incredibly talented and they would always put their heart and very soul into everything they did and complemented each other so well. Was lucky enough to see them twice in this time period.

  • @joesmith942
    @joesmith942 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I saw them in the late 70s. A pretty common comment at the time was that they were a "studio band" and would suck live. I had bought into that and was absolutely stunned. Everything they did was fantastic. I was never so happy to be wrong.

  • @difranma

I have been lucky enough to see Lindsey Buckingham play live twelve times. When he left the band in 87, every concert until the reunion, was a cheap imitation of the original. Unlike most guitarists, he does not simply convey his feelings through his guitar, he can batter and shatter you with his taunting and cutting sounds (See I'm so afraid live 1980 and 1997 versions). Lindsey, Beck and Page are by far my favorite guitarists of all time. Excellent analysis and thank you for posting it.

You are right that Buckingham is both underappreciated and underrated. What I like with Lindsey is that he try new things and constantly develop his fingerpicking style. For instance the song big love from Tango in the night is a perfect example of that. If you listen to the earlier records like rumours and the records from the mid 80s you notice his development as a guitarplayer and a musician. The acoustic live version of big love is a showcase of his brilliance.

So underrated. He puts so much emotion into the performance. Amazing, self taught I'm so angry they sacked him. This is one of my top five F/M songs. But if you go back to the original "Buckingham Nicks" album, F/M inherited a lot of those songs written by Stevie and Lindsey. One of my favorite F/M songs is "Crystal". It's just a simple but beautiful song from Buckingham Nicks. But when performed by Fleetwood Mac, it's just a whole new invention, especially with the organ fill in by Christine McVie. IMHO.

Very much appreciated your comments about the role of the organ - so often the B3 w/ Leslies - in classic rock. McVie, Winwood, Lord, Hensley, Argent, Wakeman, Garth, and on and on ... all not only added their own grungy melody to so many songs - but helped other soloists to soar.
However sketchy the song - I'll always give it more of a listen if I hear a B-3/Leslie-like tone in there somewhere.

I've come across people who didn't know he had a solo career, and heard from some very musically knowledgeable people they had no idea Holiday Road was his though they know the song from the movie.
I was reminded of something about Mick Fleetwood while watching this: he plays with his mouth open a lot. Oftentimes people will open their mouths when concentrating or trying to focus on something. It helps for some reason. ha ha! A complete change that generated new fans and soon made them into a real superstar band. And it’s truly incredible that this sort of sweet spot in time.... bands style and sound varied wildly but the contributions to music were MONUMENTAL.
I’d love to see you react to Snarky Puppy, Leonid and Friends.... theres a lot of irony in what’s playing on ‘pop’ radio when there’s typically MUCH GREATER talent that’s not being acknowledged. Loved this Fil. I really love Lindsey’s unique place in music past and present

Saw them in Cleveland in 1977 - Stevie Nicks had the flu, spent half the concert offstage drinking what looked like tea and greeted us with a Hello Cincinnati (!), but the band was on fire and I still remember being blown away by the experience. One of the best concerts of my youth and I saw lots- Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, the Eagles, The Who, Paul McCartney and Wings, Grateful Dead and many more.

This is on my playlist. I have loved Stevie since I saw her on Solid Gold. The entire US was going crazy about Madonna, but I was fascinated by Stevie. Lindsey Buckingham is incredible. I would give anything to see them. I've been a fan for decades.

A killer singer and guitarist. I feel like Lindsey has a very similar tone of voice to Kenny Loggins

They were amazing live. It's actually a new discovery for me. The studio sound is so edgeless and polished I just never would have expected much more than mellow, competent playing or a lot of support musicians to fill out their sound on stage. I laugh at how far off I was now. Gotta hand it to TH-cam.

The Buckingham Nicks record is absolutely amazing before they joined Fleetwood Mac. No doubt about his voice, guitar ability, and harmony with Stevie.

I was blown away the first time I saw Lindsey play this, he channels so much intensity and emotion through his playing. One of the reasons why I started playing fingerstyle. He's not afraid to do right out there. Check out a live performance of "Not That Funny," to see him really go over the edge. The three vocalists in the band seem to have very similar ranges which I think is why their vocals blend so well together.

I feel privileged to have seen both Fleetwood Mac and (seperately) Peter Green live. Peter Green was pretty old and far past his best, but still an honour, and Fleetwood Mac were hands down the best live act I've ever seen. Lindsey live just turns his guitar, vocals and all round craziness up to 11.

I'd rather see Lindsey Buckingham's solo show than Fleetwood Mac without him. Seen Fleetwood Mac with him and seen him solo. Love them as a group with Lindsey, but without him on board it feels like a covers band.

If I'm looking distant in a pic, my wife always adds the caption, "There's Paul day dreaming of Stevie Nicks again." Such a great band. I remember listening to Rumors back in the seventies as a kid. Every song on the album was great, which was kind-of unique in that day. I had the opportunity to get to know Bob Welch a little through the net, we sent some tunes back and forth. He was a really nice guy and a really talented musician. You have heard ebony eyes? Bob and Lindsey were both great guitarists and song writers. Great video.

Another great video. A great performance from all. Lindsey really is a fantastic guitarist. Having said that, I prefer the Los Angeles performance from 1982 (his intensity there is off the scale) however, this is still compelling!!!

The best thing you do is react/analyze something different than everyone else--it's not just the same ol' most famous songs (and bands!). Those are great songs too, but it's so nice to hear some appreciation and a bit of a breakdown of deeper cuts. Eventually you'll get tired of me commenting on everything! lol but until then, I'll just keep digging around in the back-logs of videos...

This band is so good and probably one of my favorite bands you did a great analysis on them and I'm very happy you covered another song yeah these guys were way underrated they complimented each other very nice Christine McVie had nice vocals also they were an all-around great band I think they were better then the Eagles. In my humble opinion he played pretty darn fast without using a pic 😎🤘🤘🤘👏👍👍❤ the Mac!!

TOO BAD NO MORE MAC. No More Passion , NO more Voice, OR Lindsey's unique Playing Style. It's always taken 2 guitarists and they STILL can't pull it off. You just can't replace Lindsey Buckingham. MY opinion only and I'm 60. Rock On Lindsey, I'll be fallowing your music. Never Mac without Lindsey. Good job Wings.

But....... Mac was ok for 16 years w/o Christine McVie? Her song writing/ lead/ harmony singing added so much. Guess woman are just expendable. I'd put Mike Campbell, as a guitar player, up against Lindsey any day, but he belongs w/ Tom Petty & THB. There was a reason Stevie would have quite FM in a minute to join TP & THB. Still hard to believe Tom's gone, may he R.I.P.

@@aurum750k8 Not so about Christine. Many, many folks said that FM was not the same without her. She too is underrated and i had seen many a comment about how FM is not the same without her during the 16 years she was gone. She was definitely missed.

So many mishaps kept happening and keeping me from seeing them.Someone fell off stage and whatever else when I finally did get to see them I realized halfway through concert that I was in so much awe of them that mymouth was hanging opeen, got so thirsty. That band had so much charisma and were mezmerizing!!!! They erre an extremely tight band also, I think that was the mezmerizing aspect, I would get so lost in their music and performance!!!!. Watching Stevie perform was magical as well, but the blend of all of them was a once in lifetime matchup and sadly, I'm still grieving!!!! I absolutely loved them!!! There was one concert that shocked the hell out of me, how much this jammed and rocked, don't know if anyone will agree, but it was "Men at Work", the guy jammed on that sax like there was no tommorrow. People repeatedly got them back for encore after encore until the guy came out and said "people!!!, we only have 2 albums!!!!, but they ssstill continued jamming anybody else experience them?!!!

Underrated and under-appreciated - definitely. One of the most complete guitarists in existence. I can't blame him for not wanting to tour, I've had a lot of travelling over the past 24 months and the idea of relaxing at home is very attractive.
