Love these old matches. Irish kit back then was beautiful. The huge R appearing in the top left when there's a replay....love it! I think a few years later, the tech progressed to a level where the R blinked during the replay.
I love the "R"s too which is a really sad and bad thing. The Romanian TV "R" was a big r/ flashing with a little "R" was the best in my controversial opinion. Belgian TV had a funny "H"...i need to go on..
@@d.e.s.k.t.appreciationsoci3166 I remember the east european R. Ireland played in Sofia and Russia a few times during the late 70s/80s. Lo and behold, they used an R to - although it didn't blink as fast as the R used in the 1982 World Cup - lol.
CR, Thanks for a rare look at this match from 1978-my first time seeing it since back then. Thanks for your very valuable clips from the Ireland past that we all remember so fondly!
@@proudman6598 I think it's true to say England's cricketers are from all over the place. Ben Stokes born in New Zealand, Joshua Archer Trinidad and England's greatest ever White ball Captain was aptly Irish. 4 years residence gets you international eligibility in cricket.
Ireland Vs England Football, Lansdowne Road, Dublin City, Ireland 1978 2117pm 7.9.24 i was also 7 years old when this match was played. cos i was not becuz i wanted to denigrate the facts of another's life... nice to see england play a bit of football today ie: running on to a ball played and trying to run into space as a ball was to be played. the players kept forgetting that side of things, to some degree, but then when they did get their arses in gear it looked a nice sight..... one layer making a point of allowing his team mate the chance to score.... score? sometimes it pays to score a goal. as opposed to drugs or something.
Those were the days my friends, we thought they would never change, Ireland was led by a most brilliant English/Irish man of the world Jackie Charlton and his gang of fighting boys who came from England/Scotland/Wales/Ireland and a little bit from Italy, They all fought with Irish hearts. But changes happened at today it is different. Now we have Today we have an Irish/English man managing the English team and more than half of his team has got Irish blood running through their veins and with names like Gallagher, Grealish, Jude, Kane ( my 2nd cousin), Maguire, Maddison, Rice, Philips,. So Come on England. Very sorry for my error, I mean, Come On Ireland
I was seven years old when this match was played, this is a treasure to be able to see it now.
Times move on and Ireland are shit .

Jimmy Magee, Philip Greene, afternoon kick off, straight in from school and on with the telly. Happy days.

the germans were green away shirts because of Ireland........Ireland was the first country who played a friendly against Germany after WW2
Loved Bob Latchford as a kid
Thanks for that. Shame the disallowed goal wasn't shown.
They didn't show the disallowed goal??
The late Philip Greene on radio commentary early on, when they lost Jimmy for a while.
"Kevin Keegan"...the most Irish name on the field! Irish emigration has served the British (and other nations) well.
Well the Irish were British and some still are.
To be fair the Irish team was often full of 1st or 2nd generation Irishmen with English accents or Italian names.
@wonderfullife3108 Similar to the England cricket teams with south African Zimbabwe born players.

I thought Liam Brady was playing in this game!
Great stuff
That was a European Championship qualifier, for The 1980 Finals in Italy
Even the ref seems to be fully embracing his irish heritage.
Jimmy Holmes the last time I saw him he was a policeman.😂
Jaysus, the amount of bobbling, rugby lines still marked on the pitch etc.
I totally agree. The pitch was an absolute disgrace. You could not even make out the lines around the penalty area.
@@thinkofitthisway7804 And it was the same fifteen years later, as Roy Keane wrote about in his first autobiography.
I'm sure Ireland played the All Blacks a few weeks later on this very pitch.
Liam Brady...vision and precision.
Ireland had decent players back then
England love this Fixture but they prob haven't figured out why yet
Underrated comment. 😂
That was me, four rows up from the playing turf, making the donkey noises

L' Irlande était très difficile à jouer.
L'équipe de Platini s'est"cassée

Wrong decade

This was before the charlton era. Johnny giles was manager I think
@@fitzerelli1 Thanks for letting me know, I should have made it much clearer I was referring to Jackie and his boys
Jack Charlton was a natural Irishman via Geordieland
Phil Thompson with that perm. What drugs was he on 😮
Normal for the late seventies.
If you really want a laugh, look up the scotland 78 world cup squad hairdos.

Same result today ? Philip Greene was the first commentator on the clip !
