Can’t disagree with that sentiment Sean. My Da brought me up to appreciate good football and he like myself was a Rangers man. Loved watching wee Jinky who had the heart of a Lion to match his talent. What a team those Lisbon Lions were. As you say a Celtic and football Legend. RIP.

I was a teenager when this match was played . Looking back , it shows how football is so much faster and technically better now . I'm a Celtic fan but I saw nothing wrong with Colin Stein's disallowed goal . Big George Connelly was Celtic's Franz Beckenbauer . What a sad thing for the game of football when George decided to quit due to depression and the pressure placed upon him .

A headed goal by Jimmy Johnstone in 89 minutes. Not for the first time in a 1971 Old Firm clash. And how much more sporting these matches were back then.

Great days , great players on both sides. But I still do not like the sectarianism on both sides. Never forget as 10 year old going to watch my friends play for the local boys brigade in EK. They where one short , and my best friend , a protestant , said he said he can play. So the, they let me play in those old ash parks, we won 5-1 , I scored 4 , the guy who was running, it said after it, can you play for us every week, I said sure, then he asked, what school do you go to, Our lady of Lourdes said I, sorry son we cannae use you. Didnt think twice about it, told my dad and my mate what happened, he went nuts , my dad, just shook his head, dont worry about it son. They will get over it. My best friends from my young years are all protestants. They treated me with great respect, I seen the bad on both sides. I always hoped it would end in my lifetime. But no its still there.

    • @ThefightingCelt
      @ThefightingCelt 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yes, but he was generally a bomb scare . I cannot remember him saving one penalty. Even big Jock criticized Williams publicly . That Euro -final I remember quite clearly . Celtic totally under-estimated a very goodFeyenoord team and were too cocky. Wee Bertie was non existent that night - Connelly should have played . Their number 10 , Van Hanagem ran the show .

Whenever I watch old Celtic games from the early 70’s the guy Tommy Callaghan seems to be involved, and from what I can see he plays well. Nobody has ever told me about him though, was he a good player that people have just forgotten about due to the other legends he was playing with?

I was at that game, I was in Scotland for a holiday with a mates family, they were Scottish and we lived in Oxford, I was use to watching Oxford Utd at the Manor Ground with maybe 15,000 max on a good day, never seen anything like it in my my life, even to this day, the blue disabled cars parked around the pitch, I also remember a Celtic fan running onto the pitch towards the Rangers fans and a cloud of bottles where launched at him, folk outside pissed out of their heads, absolutely great atmosphere, the spitting anger from the Rangers fans when Celtic scored at the end, I was 10 at the time....ironically I now live in Scotland, never really let on I wanted Celtic to win, I'd have been killed, I was in the Rangers end.

I also was at that game, we always stood in the enclosure next to the tunnel. There were regulars who stood there every couple of wks. If any was over the top with their language or ftp etc they were shouted down.
A good mixture of guys and gals; regarding the game it was a great game, except for the score of course.
But in Jimmy Johnstone, Scotland had a player who would have graced any club or country on the planet.
He was genuinely from my experience, and we (my wife and I) followed the Gers home and away, was the only player who struck fear in our hearts every time he had the ball....
A true giant of the game.
A very sad time for me was a few years after he retired from football, he passed us driving a builders van, in fact the back door flew open and he stopped to close it, we shouted kind words to this amazing footballer.

Great points and agree with you here , 2 good sides who played ball , very few long punts up the pitch from the goalkeepers , quick throw outs to the fullbacks and try build from the back and both could hold their own against Euro opponents .

No matter how good these sides were in their era, most modern teams would absolutely demolish them. But there's something so brilliant watching these old highlights with the simplicity and flow of the game. Felt more entertaining, two teams with massive respect for each other on the pitch going end to end. Scottish football nowadays with every man behind the ball vs celtic or rangers is just fucking boring. Gave my season ticket up at Parkhead because of it and worked with a mad bluenose who did the same. No entertainment whatsoever in watching a one way street.

We played Clyde at Shawfield. Simpson got injured and Tommy Gemmel went in goals. Knee deep in snow, midweek afternoon KO due to floodlights not working, Celts won 1-0. My dad came into my class room at Abotsford place and took me there with my broad smile. Not sure of the full team though.

Think the Stein no-goal was 50-50. His foot was pretty high with studs maybe showing, but I (Celtic fan who remembers game) wouldn't have complained had it been given. I have never bought the theory espoused by some of my fellow Celts that Rangers enjoy all the bad or doubtful decisions in Old Firm games. I have sure seen plenty of that, but I have also seen Celtic benefit from bad or doubtful decisions.

The players back then were real men, not like the big jessies of today.
That's why they had to have the square posts - otherwise the players would just be smashing their bonces off them repeatedly for no good reason, just to show them who was boss.
