I got to admit, the graffiti drawing on the MRT train is quite nice and amazing though. It's so nice that people don't realize that the graffiti drawing on the MRT train is actually vandalism.
I think it's good for Singapore to keep their places and transit clean. I know I rode on some vandalized buses and trains here in Canada, it can be pretty dirty and nasty sometimes.
Exactly, the laws of Singapore are BRUTAL, not just tough, but inhumane. They are also discriminatory toward the Male gender and are therefore also unjust and unequal. That is the point I am making, not whether or not vandalism or graffiti or anything else is a crime. You do not treat human beings in the barbaric manner in which the current regime has, and has got away with doing so. Singapore tortures people and legalizes it. That violates international laws and are crimes against humanity.
To sentence any man, much less thousands of boys and men, to be tortured by cruel, degrading and inhuman treatment is a crime in and of itself; one which Singapore must answer for one way or the other. This legalized gender violence is repugnant to civilized people worldwide. This evil system of injustice that permits physically abusing a man for spray painting on the side of a train is ludicrous, and has been shameful for the people of singapore.
SMRT should capitalize on this by giving the creative youth of Singapore one train to work on every few months. What a positive movement to recognize the creativity and spirit the exists in Singapore but has few venues to display it. I know a number of corporate sponsors that would jump on this opportunity although I would prefer to see this done outside of the soul crushing spiritual suicide of materiali$m.
We spent $ to commission artists to draw graffiti, which are so subdued. Here is one that is spontaneous, creative and loud - which is what graffiti is suppose to be. Hope SMRT do keep it.
Love the graffiti art. It's cool and urban. They shouldn't be so stuck up too. It's expressing artistic talent. Nothing's wrong with it. However McKoy should have asked for permission before doing it on the trains.
Art is art, vandalism is vandalism. I totally disagree with people who said that Singapore is too uptight and doesn't encourage their people to be 'emotional' and 'artful'. There are lots of proper outlets for that. This is not an act of heroism, this is pure vandalism - the trains are properties of SMRT and if they don't want them to be spray-painted, then people should obey. It's the same as you not wanting your private house to be spray-painted. This guy is a hooligan and a criminal!
Professionally painted graft and the authorities goes ape shit on it.. well I don't like all that advertising propaganda you put in front of me on a daily basis, I rather see painstakingly painted graft over mass produced advertising crap! Apparently when this video went viral the public was skeptical over the security breach in train depot… This is just one of the reasons why Singapore is one of the least most creative states….
Remember Michael Peter Fay (born May 30, 1975), an American who briefly shot to worldwide fame when he was sentenced to caning in Singapore as an 18-year-old in 1994 for theft and vandalism.
Oliver Fricker was sentenced to a mandatory beating with a wood cane for unauthorized spray painting on a train car Singapore calls vandalism. The more serious charge of trespassing which could potentially cause a critical security issue for the country did not have the penalty of being flogged. This is insane. Beatings are imposed only on male criminals for other trivial things also and if this man is beaten there should be an will be serious international consequences

The changes could actually attract more people to take public transport then personal transportation.People will also look forward to see different kind of arts along the train besides seeing the same MUNDANE AND BORING colours everyday!!

@somuchsolittleful YES Singapore DOES impose FLOGGINGS (which is mandatory) for vandalism. Two different considerations here. Fricker sentenced to be FLOGGED FOR VANDALISM--which is written into Singapores violent laws. He was also convicted for trespassing, which is a security breach, but NO beating for that. Beating anyone to inflict bodily harm and or injury IS VIOLENT, SADISTIC, and BARBARIC! Oliver Fricker is no terrorist and the judge knew it acknowledging there was no sinister agenda
Chapter 1: No graffiti at all No graffiti. How? 1. Spot the culprits 2. Tell them to stop. 3. If not, call 999. 4. Inform SMRT or SBS Transit's co-operation persons. 5. Show your evidence.
no wonder, singapore is called "a 'fine' city"... I totally understand that most of the singaporeans feel attacted. Therefore it is a must for yoou guys to protect your national pride in spite of knowing that there is something wrong with the goverment. The strict law just shows that the government is seeking for the validation of the rest of the world and wants to be recognized instead of truely focusing on the freedom and human rights.
You cannot deny the facts that the ruthless Singapore government sentences thousands of males to the violence and brutality of floggings annually, many for never having committed a single act of violence, yet violence is used upon them. This legalized brutality is a disgrace to civilized people everywhere and demonstates the sickness of singapore. Almost the entire first world has agreed this cruelty is Torture and is outlawed, but Singapore clings to it's backward insitiution pf violence.
@accountantboy You are exactly right! The penalty for this artisic Non Violent expression is EXCESSIVE. I know what could have and might have been--but this swiss man is NOT a terrorist and the judge and courts know this. They want to make an example of him because this government rules this country upon FEAR! Fear of beatings or death penalty is how the people are controlled. Punishment yes--Torture NO!!
@somuchsolittleful Graffiti is actually a talent, much recognized and appreciated by other countries. Places like Barcelona, Spain and São Paulo, Brazil, consider graffiti as street art for all to admire. Singapore's government clearly has a incredible flaw. I don't feel insulted when foreigners criticize Singapore; because to call Singapore a third-world country is far from a lie. Torturing a man with the intent of exhibiting his art is vicious, it's no wonder Westerners always disparage us.
it was acty well done and i salute him and his work man! the train should be having such art!! too gray, black and red are boring.. singapore mannnn....... unfortunately he breached the security.
the sentence is 44 years old and yes I agree with you all even though I'm Singaporean. Caning is indeed inhumane and Singapore ought to change it soon. But stoning here and flaming isn't gonna help or get Oliver Fricker out of prison
Yes, the design is awesome, but many of us are overlooking something very important. If this guy can breach the security of SMRT, terrorists can too. They can just trespass the premises and place some kind of bomb inside... I hope SMRT can review their security systems.
THAT was art, and should be treated as so. Sure to be honest with you, that type of train didn't really need graffiti on it. But still, haha, just QUIT trying to stop it. The harder you fight against us, the harder we FIGHT BACK. Seriously, I read an article a few months ago about graffiti in the US and it said just that. Most of us who do graffiti art have used it as a way to get out of WORSE crimes. So the way you look at it, if graffiti begins to die out, more serious crimes occur!!
When Singapore held the Youth Olympic Games with 660 savvy media broadcasting the country to a worldwide audience, and the latest F1 Night race - with over 80,000 people at the races - beamed to the world of 500 million vewers, what do you think? Did everyone from the youths and everyone returned home safely and happily? YOU BET! F! owner Bernie clamoured for another 12 years!! F1 helped fuel rise in Singapore's Sept arrivals -950,000 tourists, August attracted nearly 1,000,000 visitors!!
Due to vandalism or graffiti, set 047/048 has bad motor sound. And one thing the train won't change: Motor sound. CULPRITS WAS SENT TO JAIL IMEDIATELY!
The security breach was certainly an embarassment to the third world government of Singapore and to make an example of Fricker and make him pay they ordered him TORTURED for vandalism. Volent retribution is what the PAP that governs the city is all about. Pathetic Ignorant savages who commit human rights violations week after week. International companies and corporations that do business with these sadists should be boycotted.
No one can say what most Singaporeans feel about caning because of comments on the internet., nor what they may think of any other form of brutality aimed against males. Being beaten and tortured by sadists isn't just humiliating it is a crime itself. It may be also be true that those maimed, stoned, blineded, and or flogged would not want to experience inhumane treatment again--NO ONE should have to endure such depravity. That is why this is illegal in most of the modern world and Barbaric!
@A1260T Agreed. It is absolutely outrageous that this city-state's dictatorship makes it legal to Physically assault someone violently for something like this. Unheard of in todays first world countries as Flogging is outlawed-but Singapore has never progressed past the midieval ages.

@dubbelmacka87 The artist is a HERO and through his mistreatment, suffering and beating he will be able to EXPOSE the unjust laws and barbaric brutality of a cruel and cold blooded country to the rest of the civilized world. When this is all ended Singapore can look for its next male victim., it should not take too long to smell more blood.
What's in contention here is how graffit is done here - the artist breaks into a protected or private premise UNINVITED! It's a violation of the owner's rights. For those of you who support this act, ask yrself this question: Imagine a graffit artist breaking into yr house and spray paint your mom's room when she didnt ask for it, or a tattoo artist forcibly ties you up and tattoo your body with his signature, do you like it? It's an assault right?
its spray paint, you put it on, you clean it off. most of these cars are coated and can be scrubbed clean in a matter of minutes. some of you are taking this to seriously. why is it that when someone does something thats considered defiant, everyone jumps on the kill him band wagon.
it is a great art! why arrest him? should give him a prize reward......i think his art is so much better than our laselle students....should learn from him.
i really think this art is nice. yeah. smrt shud have some competitions for people to decorate the mrt. more home feeling, really. the mrt colour now seriously sucs
I was young when all NYC subway train looked like this. Guess what, NYC was a dump full of drug addicts & prostitutes. Some call it art and most people call it vandalism because it creates a sense of chaos. NYC only got better when we started cleaning up the graffiti and got rid of the squeegy guys who cleans car windows force.
Singapore gave out the perfect sentence for the vandal. He broke the fence and vandalized the MRT. Given that he had a work permit, he should have been in Singapore for sometime and should know the consequence of his actions. It was HIS choice to get caned, that shows how stupid he is! Congratulations to you, Oliver...
@JMOLIVES Graffiti, Tagging, Art, whatever you would like to call it--but you know what--IT is still ART. These people, and this man does not deserve to be whipped because of the barbaric rules of the jungle that Singapore still has in place. He harmed nobody and there cannot be any RESPECT for a government that tortures.
The communist newspaper reports today that a man was ordered to jail for 17 months for repeatedly beating and injuring his girlfriend---but no TORTURE!! However Torture beatings were ordered for Oliver Fricker who painted artwork on the side of a train! I am not advocating violent physical assault on any man, but anyone can see the warped sense of justice in Singapore's judicial system - which is a mockery of justice in every sense of the word.
I got to admit, the graffiti drawing on the MRT train is quite nice and amazing though. It's so nice that people don't realize that the graffiti drawing on the MRT train is actually vandalism.

After this train got its graffiti removed, it served the Airport Branch line and do you think tourists would like to see the graffiti on the trains???
I would prefer the graffiti rather than the stupid ad
This was the 2nd vandalism case in Singapore following Michael Faye's incident in 1994.
holy shit, the train now looks 100 times cooler before it got spray-painted!
@shamzam2007 It's the front page of today's Strait's Times. Unfortunately, you need to have a paid subscription to see the online version.
Seriously.. The art looks good!!
Well, even if that was vandalism, it was quite nicely done :P
it is a great art! why arrest him? should give him a prize reward......i think his art is so much better than our laselle students....should learn from him.
If only they put this much effort into getting and keeping a job.
holy mother. i've been waiting for this day to come
i really think this art is nice. yeah. smrt shud have some competitions for people to decorate the mrt. more home feeling, really. the mrt colour now seriously sucs
People who did this must be punished, prosecuted & sent to court!!
Very nice graffiti. More of it please!
it looks like grand deft auto send
Singapore gave out the perfect sentence for the vandal. He broke the fence and vandalized the MRT. Given that he had a work permit, he should have been in Singapore for sometime and should know the consequence of his actions. It was HIS choice to get caned, that shows how stupid he is! Congratulations to you, Oliver...
my drawing is not as good as them. By the way, the drawing look very beautiful, why the police arrest the guy?
Actually like the painting. Look professional =D
i still remember this graffiti incident.
