I've waited 22 years to figure out how to pass this level at 8:45. I put that on anything, I'm not trying to be funny or sarcastic in ANY WAY. I kept jumping thinking that that barrel thing will go down further but nope.

It's easily the worst zone in the entire game, bar none.
Annoying music, annoying stage hazards, unintuitive level design, and two shit bosses.
Honestly, barrel aside, I have a blast with this level every time I play it. I think a lot of the hatred towards its level design is undeserved. Same thing with Sandopolis................

Looking back Carnival Night zone was the oddest stage in the context of Sonic 3. A modern electrical city with an amusement park theme in an ancient floating isolated tropical island. Plus the floating barrel issues for a bunch of kids that just know how to mash the jump button in a game about speed to the finish line.
I love carnival themed zones but whoever designed this level, specifically whoever thought those up and down barrels were a great idea, deserves a slap in the face. Twenty times.

19 years ago I was crazy about this game. I played it a dozen times and I always got stuck at 8:45. To this day I always thought that my game copy had some weird glitch or probably I was missing some key or activation/lever in the game. Finally after so many years today I saw that it was so easy to get past that. I am literally shocked at the simplicity of this... So much nostalgia, sigh..

In terms of music this was one of my favourite zones, and of course, lots of crazy fun (and frustrating ) surprises and annoying obstacles that have the potential to drive you insane.

8:45 Seeing that all of us have struggled with this one part in this terrible level as a whole strongly reminds me of the platform in TNMT on NES that only requires you to walk over it and nothing else. A moment where we all thought too hard

8:45, what the crap! all you had to do at this part was just stand there and the damn thing does down by its self!?!? I got stuck at that part when I played through a pc version of the game many years ago and was never able to pass the stupid part
Up and down on the control pad is how to move that.
Don't worry, this was randomly bothering me tonight in my thoughts as I remember only being able to once pass that one part in Act 2 at that same point only by specifically timing the jumps just right with both controllers (and was only ever successful once) and was wondering if there was an alternate route or something I always seemed to miss. I never knew about the D-Pad up and down controls for the vertical swaying spinning cylinders either.

8:45 We are entitled to have this rage, HATE and to vent without consequence. Sega, what were they thinking? What they should have done on the DL within the manual this bit should have been discreetly placed within its pages. It could have been placed sorta like a walkthrough without making the obvious "HINT" about this particular part of the stage, shadowing attempting to hide the obvious followed by describing the abilities Sonic 3 incorporates into the franchise. A fragmented sentence to highlight how by mere button presses platforms could be moved beyond their intended location allowing the player to reach unfathomable hights. Just hype it up to try to make us not realize the obvious but by the use of common sense they would have made us realize that, Sega, had helped us to advance .. to cheat so to speak. I wonder if Sonic 3 had beta gameplay testers at all because i am sure the beta testers would have gotten stuck also. If Sega ever were to say that the game play beta team did not encounter some of miniscule difficulty, Sega please tell me, reveal to us now so that i can run the cartridge through the belt sander here at shop, to further cement Sonic 3 convincingly for the garbage that it truly is allowing me to call them out on their bullshit with justification. This will establish the love-hate sentiment that i already have for this game, the "LOVE" we all share.

I hated this level purely because of 8:45. I only got through twice by jumping up and down and I remember getting pissed off when tails would find a way down while I’d still be stuck. It wasn’t until many years later that I discovered all it required was pressing the up and down button 😂

After many many tries, my sis and I got thru the barrel part accidentally and luckily. So naturally we had to get to the checkpoint or we'd pull our hair out. No TH-cam back then to show us the answer

Ok maybe some of you can come up here because of Sonic Origins. Thats my case ;) on the red white jumping platform just jump to it, nothing more, to have some momentum. From there follow the motion, move Sonic down when it goes down and move his head up when the platform rises. Took 10 minutes to understand this shit. Do this, and you go where you want. Enjoying Sonic Origins a lot 💪😎
