Owen wasn't the most talented player on the team and wasn't even recruited by WVU. He literally had his own high school video tapes and visited schools on his own. When he got a shot at WVU, he made the most of it because of his heart and work ethic. 3-4-5 Star talent is great ...bit you can't put a value on heart, determination and work ethic. Period! Owen was able to play in the NFL for a few years because of the above. I will never forget Owen Schmitt "The run away beer truck." Much respect!
This is my favorite piece of Mountaineer history. We had our best coach of all time straight up abandon our team right before a bowl game. An assistant coach name Bill Stewart stepped up and got these young men the victory they deserved. RIP Coach Bill Stewart. I hope to meet you on the other side.

I can’t help but to get teary eyed when I watch this video. Owen Schmitt will ALWAYS be a West Virginia LEGEND! The #35 jersey should be retired at WVU.
