    Just restored my late father's senior stockman with the match strike nail pull. Stamped 8OT on the back and Schrade Walden NY USA on the front. He was an Ozarks man born in 1916 who always always always carried a knife and a firearm. This knife whittled away many an hour and sliced up many an apple.

    I have an 8OT in my pocket. It belonged to my wife. She was A talented wood carver. I lost her in 2020 after 42 years together. Its a great knife but i carry it in her honor. She cant take care of me anymore but her knife does. It dont warm me at night though. 😢

    I am not a collector, but I do have an 8OT with match strike nail nick marked in three lines: Schrade N.Y. USA 8OT, It shows signs of a good bit of use on all three blades but they are not broken. When I got it, it had a lot of gunk on the blades that looked like hardened glue. I scraped it all off and lightly sanded all the blades. (Maybe I shouldn't have done that, but I like it better than before I sanded it, and I am not worried about the collector value.) I assume from what you said that it was made in 1973. I enjoyed your video. And I wanted to tell you that my cat showed a lot of interest in smelling the knife. She sniffed at it for a full minute; I wonder if the glue that I removed was hide glue, which might indicate that a previous owner was a woodworker. It's fun to think about who might have owned it, what they did with it, and where it has been.

      Nice knife! I'm glad you got it cleaned up and are using it. Even with worn blades I think it still has plenty of life left in it. Thanks for sharing!

    The 8OT is my favorite Old Timer knife ever. I've probably had half a dozen of these things over the years, the first of them made in 1976. I have one recent Chinese made copy that doesn't hold a candle to any of my Ellenville 8OTs. One of the 8OT's shining qualities is the strong back springs. My Chinese 8OT doesn't have that same same snap when you open the blades.....and also no carbon steel, which I love. Why are these Chinese makers so afraid to make knives with carbon steel?

    You've got a nice collection of 8OTs there. Probably my favorite pattern too. I've been lucky enough to pick up both a very nice (maybe unused) 8OT and 885UH recently. Really enjoying carrying them and messing with them.

    Very good video I like the old Timer 8OT as the best , these knives were made to work as an everyday carry knife the belt sheath is a good idea! we all know that a quarter sized object can fall through a dime size hole!

    Beautiful knives! It'd be neat to find a late-production example of an Old Timer with SS Uncle Henry blades! I had no idea they did that towards the end.

      I've read that some people specifically collect those "end of days" knives. They are unique and some consider them rare, so they are quite popular.

    I don't have the 8OT but I have two of the 108 Juniors unused in the boxes with papers and the Uncle Henry 885UH unused in the box with papers. I also have the large Imperial stockman that appears to be unused. I thought you made a good point about the factory seconds. There are many out there and if people are unaware they exist then if they pick one up then they think that all knives of that brand are crap.

    • @garethbaus5471

      I assume the 108OT knives are part of a collection, but if they aren't and simply have them but arn't using them I would be willing to buy one off of the for 30 dollars plus shipping.

    Nice collection. I just purchased one new in the clam pack from eBay for $45. It has a date of 94 on the clam pack. I own a 340ts but the 80t is the perfect hard use size in my opinion. I have a few older uncle Henry’s also. Any idea what kind of stainless steel they used? I would guess 440 or 420 but was not for sure

    • @ISLANDOUTDOORS1
      @ISLANDOUTDOORS1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Here is what I found on bladeforums.com
      ;Schrade+” steel was actually a trademarked name used for at least two different stainless steel alloys. First was 440A. Then a change was made to 420HC. As of this time, there is conflicting information about when this change took place, but it seems to have been sometime after the 2000 production year. The 440A has a carbon content of 0.60-0.75%, Chromium 16.0-18.0%, Manganese 1.00%, Molybdenum 0.75%, Phosphorus 0.04%, Silicon 1%, and Sulphur 0.03% according to ladle sample maximums. Stainless steel is just as it’s name implies... it “stains less”, but will still discolor or rust to some extent if not properly cared for. Both carbon and stainless blades were heat treated to 56-59 Rockwell.

      @michiganedge4770 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ISLANDOUTDOORS1 thanks for the info. Remember the days when 440a was a premium steel? I really like the stockman pattern in general. I think next on my list is some older buck 301’s. I just got done grinding my large case yellow handle stockmans clip point blade into a wharnclife blade. Turned out really nice.

      ed wither it would take you about 2-3 minutes on a grinder. Look it up it’s a great whittling blade shape. Pointy tip and flat cutting edge. I do it on a lot of my stockman knives. Just take your time on the grinder and be careful to not get the blade to hot and ruin the temper. About 3-5 seconds let cool for about 5 and repeat. Pretty easy

      Yes. Almost exclusively. I never liked the swinden key style. I buy old schrades, take them apart and install real pins. Way sturdier.
