Shout to the top by Style Council, the 1st Lloyd Cole album, The Cure in between days, Tears For Fears, Howard Jones, Culture Club, FGTH... You Brits definitely ruled in those years. And all the radio stations here in the West of the Continent played it all.

WE were literally spoilt for choice with so many genres all fighting for the tops spots. I shared music with my siblings so I had Punk, New Wave, New Romantics, Techno, Disco, Reggae, Mods, Metal all mixed in with R&B, Motown, Jazz, Jazz Funk, Jazz Fusion, Soft Rock and may more, so I appreciated it all and went to see tons of live bands as was lucky enough to live 25 minutes from central London so would hop on the tube and be at some of the best live gigs in town! I love listening to these songs as it keeps the memories alive!

I think the backlash was symptomatic of the snobbish attitude the predominantly white musical press had towards soul and pop music at the time (i.e. basically anything that wasn't a rock song played by a bunch of white guys on guitar). But like you say, this song and the band are class.
If like me you lived and loved the music from this period you will be aware there are more iconic Style council songs than those of the Jam and great song writers have to move on or stagnate. I notice there is a new Style council cd released as opposed to the Jam wonder why that is ???
That's because The Jam had a fan base of teenage boys. Of course they weren't happy Paul decided The Jam were in a artistic dead end and split the band. The more open minded embraced The Style Council. The last few singles by The Jam were not too different to the first few singles by Paul's new group.

I was only 3 in 1983 & have to admit that it wasn’t until 2003 when I watched the video & in doing so discovered The Style Council thanks I seem to remember to an ‘I love 1983’ programme. Paul Weller for me up to this point was all about the solo stuff in the 90s (I knew a little about The Jam). Pivotal moment in my musical education.

I saw Paul Weller some while back in my local park in London with his partner and two little boys. I really wish I'd gone over to him just to say how much enjoyment his music has given me over the years, but I didn't want to disturb his family time.

I saw Paul Weller some while back in my local park in London with his partner and two little boys. I really wish I'd gone over to him just to say how much enjoyment his music has given me over the years, but I didn't want to disturb his family time.
I met him in High Street Kensington. He is a lovely person. Don't hesitate the next time!!

Timeless,.. recently herd this while shopping in a well known D.iY shop,… and yes I did it,….I did the river bank dance,…. Next to the pond,… misses said no matter what you do,….
