this family represents every toxic coping mechanism to deal with problems/trauma. Claire bottles up, the father avoids, the stepmother is emotionally abusive and fleabag deals with outbursts. Genius writing
She absolutely is brilliant! A fun fact is that she asked Pheobe Waller-Bridge to write her a real bitch of a character to play, so the part of the godmother from the play was expanded and written specifically for Olivia Colman.
Are you female or male? Because as a woman I found it absolutely gut-wrenching. Nothing funny about it whatsoever. I'm not convinced it was meant to be a comedic moment.
It’s actually sad because Claire is bittersweet with the miscarriage because she didnt want Martin’s baby. But at the same time, it’s also her baby. That’s how I interpreted the scene
@@hwren9845 I found the moment both funny and heartbreaking. I think it straddles that line perfectly. I say that as someone who has experienced my own traumatic miscarriage.
Claire feels no agency and no fortitude to face her real feelings. A woman's reproductive health is hers and hers alone so it makes total sense to feel this way. Indeed, heartbreaking and not funny.
As a a girl with a sister that last scene with Fleabag and Claire in the taxi is the epitome of what having a sister/being a sister is like for me. You can have the most awful heartbreaking argument caused by truly tragic circumstances which may lead your relationship to be a bit broken for a while, then one of you just needs to make a funny observation and all is not necessarily forgiven or forgotten, but you can suddenly co-exsist again and regain that ability to know what the other is thinking. That image of the two of them smirking about how “hot” the priest is, while Fleabag is sat with blood running down her face in the back of the taxi with Claire who Fleabag hasn’t spoken to in a year, just is the perfect and realistic visualisation of sisterhood to me.
During dinner Clare says how she just bottles up negative feelings and buries them, so of course that is how she deals with her miscarriage as well. Fleabag is at the other extreme end of the spectrum where she has her emotions on display and always ends up making a scene, but in this case it's what Claire needed to get through that moment. I think the godmother was totally behind the voucher for the counselling as a way to make a dig at fleabag she knew exactly what it was and was probably counting on fleabag opening it in front of everyone so she could have her little moment to put fleabag down again. This show is so clever at the relationships between the family. Can't wait to see the rest of the season!
I have gotta say this sis probably one of the more intense premiers to a new season opening iv ever seen the whole tension building up to that fight was so well done
The worst part about Martin is you know if he had been aware that his own wife was having a miscarriage he would have been the "supportive perfect husband".
The thing that I really respect about Phoebe is that she took her time to write season 2 (Season 1 came out in 2016 and season 2 in 2019) and wasn't going to do a season 2 until she felt she had a story to tell. I wish more show runners would do that. Quality over quantity.
What I find interesting and clever about this season is that not only does it hint at a love story between the Hot Priest and Fleabag, but the love story aspect can also apply to Fleabag and Claire: their relationship becoming better and then standing up for each other!!
The fact that you don't know the hot priest (Andrew Scott) means that the next series you guys could watch, could be Sherlock. He is amazing in that show as well. Also I think you three would enjoy it very much.
LITERALLY the first episode and I love the dinner scene. Queen Olivia Colman shines as always especially when she goes “…his mother was originally a LESBI-“
You guys warm my heart with your empathy and kind commentary, how invested you get and how you show your emotions ❤️ seriously Fleabag is an amazing show but, you guys surprise me in the most positive way
the way this episode isn't boring at any point and yet was basically all shot at the dinner table! Like many others in the comments, I also regard season 2 as one of the best single seasons of TV. Can't wait for the rest of your reactions!
It was SO nice seeing Andrew Scott as 'Hot Priest' after watching him as evil 'Professor Moriarty' in the 'Sherlock' series 😀 Phoebe Waller-Bridge is a genius!
guys, i just found your channel and i CHUGGED every bit! i absolutely love that you’re giving attention to this show. i think that’s in a way of a private journal of so many women all over the world and it’s very nice to look at you having your own way of interpreting and looking at this. love love love it, thank you very much
It's been really interesting watching you guys react to Fleabag. Being that it was probably written for a completely different audience then yourselves, mainly female millennials acquainted with that English dry humour. Your reactions to the characters have been completely different to mine when I watched it, who you sympathised with and what choices you question. Yet the main similarity been all audiences being the reaction to Martin. Which have been quite amusing to watch happen in real time.
You guys are so awesome for how fast you've been dropping these episodes, thank you!! I've been so excited to see y'all get to Season 2! This show is so underrated and goes under the radar by a lot of reactors, so it's cool to see you guys appreciate the show. This season is personally my favorite out of the two - but I do want to say that Season 1 is what makes Season 2 so good, if that makes sense? They flow into each other so well, and put together it's a perfect arc in my opinion. It's always so wild to me that Phoebe Waller Bridge never intended to make a 2nd season and only did so at the request of the producers, because the 2nd season complements Season 1 so well. Even just the opening of Season 2 is so epic, it puts the audience right into it with the intense church/latin music and the out-of-context bloody nose (lol), and it's such great writing that the whole episode pretty much happens during a single evening too, but you don't even notice because the tension is built up so well!
I had a Thanksgiving just like this minus the fist fight. Parents had gotten into a car accident due to their drinking and they insisted on serving and drinking a bunch of wine the next day at Thanksgiving, laughing and chatting and refusing to talk about what happened. The gall I felt for this gaslighting made me leave the table to cry. They followed me to yell at me for making a scene and ruining the holiday. It's awful when your family refuses to deal with real shit.
I thought season one was basically the best live action tv show I'd ever seen. Then Fleabag season two came out and topped it. Stoked to ride along as you watch.
I literally binged the whole of S2...what an incredible show and season this is! I cannot wait to see what you guys think! I'm definitely adding this to one of my favourite shows :)
As someone who has been in therapy I don't really like it tbh...Fleabag is very traumatized...and that's a voucher for a SINGLE session...it's practically useless. She will not be able to talk about everything she needs to to heal significantly in one fucking session. 🤷♀️ It's...not a great gift, IMO. Money would be more beneficial to her as these boys have said.
No way!!! I just binged your season 1 reaction and was so sad that I was going to have to wait a little while before you get to season 2!!! This is such a good surprise!
you cut out the best joke after the priest says his brother is a pedophile 😭 Fun Fact: I walked by the very restaurant they were filming that scene in ON THE VERY DAY THEY WERE FILMING. Asked a crew guy what was being filmed (I was still in a bit of a "finding/worming my way onto/hanging around sets" mind from "Sherlock" back then) and he very kindly answered they were filming "Fleabag", a show with Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Olivia Colman. While I knew Olivia Colman, I didn't know either PWB nor Fleabag back then and pissed off. Could kick myself to this very day because there was NO ONE ELSE AROUND BUT ME 😭
The whole episode reads so differently on a rewatch, now that you know what's going on with Claire. She's so happy, almost giddy, because she secretly knows she's pregnant....which makes the miscarriage that much more heartbreaking. "It's mine."
@@AnxietyRat tbf noting that she's not the one who had it isn't necessarily noting that she claimed she did. they're not mutually inclusive, you could understand one and still miss the other

In the last season, Fleabag's dad is getting clumsy and is worried about letting his wife find out - and by this season he's jumbling up words and forgetting some entirely - when I saw this season I immediately thought: he's ill, and getting worse.
Yes, I didn't notice at first but this could be a subtle hint he's in the early stages of Alzheimer's. IS one of the reasons he's marrying Godmother that he's worried about what'll happen if there's nobody to look after him?
@@reinette Yup, I think she mentions it at one point during the wedding, asking Fleabag and Claire if they want to look after him 'in the years ahead'. Really, all you need to do is compare Bill Paterson's (Dad) performance in the wedding compared to the funeral flashbacks. It's a great bit of under-the-radar writing by PWB as well as a great performance by Bill.

Fleabag’s Jumpsuit in Episode 1 is iconic.
