      @@dimitristsekeris1821 there is so much more to their lives than that. They teach the young how to hunt, were to hunt. They go with other pods to mate. They swim 100 miles all the time. And the ocean is never the same on any given day so they get variety. Now compare that to tili getting tossed a ball. To swim round and round . Im not going to even get into each pods language and how every member has a specific sound that is called to them only. Just like we have names. Then there is the emotional side they show to each other and reinforce bonds by touch and rubs. So to say that all they do is swim and eat is highly insulting to them and a HUGE understatement.

    I don't know if you know it or not
    I had a cat i read that if you feed your pets regularly when they catch their prey the play with it
    My cat did that
    He played with the mice he caught
    This applies to them too
    If you watch the other video you will see that in some ways they act like a dog
    Amaya in the other video
    She solicits touch from her trainer
    If you know cats and dogs
    They will use your hands to let you know they want to be petted

      I think it's very entertaining for them, even if they don't catch a bird, because they seem to get a kick out of the birds' reactions.

    I'm curious if this a habit killer whales developed as a form of hunting for extra food and amusement or if this is also done in the wild.

    • @Echobeluga
      @Echobeluga  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Chaoticstorm So they don't really eat the birds caught; they really just take it apart as if it was a toy. So, I would say it's for amusement more than anything. Also, they may bait birds but may not show intention to catch the birds (actually lunging) every time they do it. Killer whales are known to prey on birds and in general are opportunistic hunters but it's highly unlikely they learned to regurgitate food to catch them. It's easier to do it at SeaWorld when the birds there have learned to steal food from unnatural sources.

      +EchoBeluga Do you think that the orcas are doing this because they lack for environmental enrichment that they would normally have in the wild? Intelligent mammals are known to take on destructive behaviours when bored. I only say this because they would have no intention of eating the bird.

    • @Echobeluga
      @Echobeluga  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Labra dorable
      I think that's feasible. It was probably something they learned over time when regurgitating fish and seagulls were attracted, and it's something that the younger ones pick up on too. But yes, captive animals are generally less exposed to dynamic stimuli than wild animals and the challenge is to make sure they remain stimulated outside of interactions with their trainers (which is arguably the most stimulating part of their day). With orcas this can be achieved with intraspecies social interaction and environmental enrichment. Sometimes they'll come up with their own games and in extreme cases, exhibit stereotypical behavior. I will say that enrichment programs at SeaWorld, while they are getting better, always have more room for improvement.
