Mateer is good. But if they do not get the offensive line issues fixed it does not matter. He will have a horrible year if the line plays like it did this year next season
What I'm most surprised by is peoples expectations that OU would just somehow win and not look like anything they had for the 2024 season... like wtf happened over the holidays that made everyone, not just OU fans, think OU was not somehow a different team???
I started watching Oklahoma football in the Barry Switzer years. I lived through the downward spiral between coach Switzer and Bob Stoops. I cannot recall a time when it felt more embarrassing to be a Sooner fan than right now! That was the season in a single game. Just a pathetic mess. I love BV, but I can’t believe that in year three, he has matched his year one performance? 6-7. It’s shocking! So much tradition. So much pride. So much love for this program! This has to be the last time coach V. Never again!
I grew up in the Switzer era, too, and agree that this is as embarrassed and dejected as I can remember feeling. It seems like the program's leadership-especially the big money men-does not have a serious, championship mindset, given the apparent miserliness we've seen with staff hires/retention and poor portal performance.
As a longhorn fan I've been saying all year BV was not a good head coach and all y'all responded as if I was just being a hater. What you guys failed to miss is as a Texas fan and a dozen years of being a loser basically we can see a bad coach miles away because we've lived it from Charlie Strong to Tom Herman and both showed the exact same tendencies as BV does. The longer he stays the longer the recovery will take when he's finally finished destroying the program. Being humbled sucks buts that's where Oklahoma is at and will be until changes are made.
The only thing that has not changed is the head coach. Qb changed, o-line changed,oc changed,wr changed, running backs changed when will people start looking at the problem, BV isn’t a good hc.
Ok I have questions because I keep hearing Arbuckle-Mateer. For one Why did they only score 12 against teams like Wyoming and not win in that conference? Now you get harder competition with a depleted roster and magic happens?
Wyoming was not in their conference. The “great” Lincoln Riley and his ECU team only scored 10 against some bad team with 7 coming in the final minutes just before OU hired him. Let’s not forget Josh Heupel’s OU offense scored 34 in regulation against Tennessee in 2014 with Trevor Knight and Samaje Perrine and sterling sheppard. With Lincoln Riley in 2015 plus Baker Mayfield, Samaje Perrine, Joe Mixon, Sterling Sheppard, Mark Andrew’s, DeDe Westbrook his offense managed a whopping 3 points until about halfway through the fourth quarter then scored to late TDs to tie and go OT twice with TDs to score 31 total points
Have the similar question. Wash State finished the regular season 8-4 not playing in the SEC. So he is a good starting place, but there's a bigger issue. Wash State lost the game tonight, but they had 30 plus in the portal and there's no doubt Wash State would have beat OU today had they played. It's coaching. They looked like they came to play without the 30 plus players that left. OU no. They rarely showed up to play consistently all season except for Alabama. OU needs a new head coach and probably a restructure in the AD down, if they aren't going to become Nebraska.
Very good summary of this game - once again, we were out-coached and out-schemed. Even with this very young team we are better than Navy. We come out and score 2 TD’s because the coaching predicted what Navy would do - THEN Navy’s DC’s made adjustments, but OU’s OC’s did not? We did what we always do this season - throw the ball when we’re winning on the ground and either not connect or drop the ball - then we’re behind the sticks allowing a quick defense to pressure and gap scheme and either punt and not win on 4th down. The defense played well also the first part and then didn’t adjust to the counter blocking - Kanak got out of position again and did not see the field after the 95 yd run. I love that kid and his attitude BUT he will NOT stay disciplined and needs to go play for Texas. Finally, I was a 100% Venebles fan and am beginning to have doubts and wonder if next years’ defense will be as good as some say? I like the new direction on offense and am hopeful in 2025. I do think OU needs to be a minimum of 8-4 next year to even think about Venebles remaining as the HC. Cautiously hopeful…….BOOMER!
Dude Kanak would be like 4th string over here. What are you talkin about? 😂 Also, he is your best shot at having competent lb play next year. He ain't goin anywhere. 😂

I'm glad the season is over. I'm tired of watching this terrible offense. Ben Arbuckle will come in and change the structure of the offense so it isn't nearly as risk adverse. Secondly, we need tight ends badly
Why do you guys think Ben is going to somehow wave a magic wand? He's had success as a offensive coordinator but his resume is super short. He doesn't have enough experience at the position to really judge his worth. Another gamble by BV IMO.

We'll see what next year brings. Brent needs to win 9 games or better next year to keep his job. Having said that , Brent wasn't dropping passes today. Hawkins is still holding the ball too long. I'm optimistic we have Mateer and Arbuckle. I hope we can pick up one more big receiver. They should move Kanak to H-back. He's a great athlete. He's just playing on the wrong side of the ball. Is it softball season yet???
Hawkins has a ton of potential. His mechanics need work (watch his feet), he throws way too hard too often, and struggles to see the whole field. But, he hasn't had a QB's coach, so he did very well considering. He's gonna have to be stellar to beat-out Mateer and the new guy coming in, though. Hopefully he can develop into "the guy" for two years from now. The RB's rotation looks like Demarco chooses who to put in by spinning a wheel. Notice how often the offensive play calls don't match the personnel on the field. That's a cardinal sin in coaching, and we've seen it all three years of the Venables regime.
Oaklahoma got out schemed out coached however the offense used their tight ends OU needs better offensive coaching Hawkins has potential Arbuckle can’t get to Norman fast enough Next year isn’t going to anything like this year BOOMER
I agree with tdwillits. We could have the best damm quarterback in the country, but if we don’t have an offensive line that can hold that line long enough for him to work what good is it. Or offensive plays called that moves the ball down the field instead of sideways on the field we’re still not good to be enough better off than we are now. Because you don’t move down the field if you’re constantly going sideways with no more than two or three yards made at a time for each play. First downs don’t come very fast that way. I mean being in a fourth down and one twice and we can’t even pick up the first down how pathetic is that?
It's not all about this team changing. BV needs to help them win. Going for it twice at 4th down? Practically giving them 7 points when you're already under manned? SMH.
Venerables get's out coached consistently. I can't support a dude that makes terrible coaching decisions almost every week. I've been saying it since he got to Oklahoma, some times 3 points is good enough. Sometimes a punt is the correct choice.
