Hi there, not sure where your other comment went, but managed to read it in my emails, and totally agree, it was a strange pairing, and you can tell that Cilla is singing louder than normal to match Ethel's belting! 😄I think it was probably a scoop for the producers at the time to get her on the show!
@@GeorgeLyall I did but then felt that I’d perhaps been unkind about Cilla and I really didn’t mean to be. I’m just amazed at how famous she was in her day. Something I didn’t realise. I’ll still stand by her struggling to sing with Ethel though. I remember watching her say to Judy Garland, “We’re the last of the big belters!”. As fine a singer as Cilla was, it’s like watching a lion and a kitten trying to roar at each other. Ethel was definitely the lion! However, I can just see Paul O’Grady shouting that line from “Gypsy” at Cilla. He would use the line a lot in his act. I know a lot of people won’t know about Cilla and Paul’s close friendship but, those who “get it” will understand. I’m very sorry I made a mess in the comments section but I’m glad you remembered! As I said in the deleted one, the quality is outstanding and I’m sure it’s the best quality version of her singing “No Business Like Show Business” live. Thank you for sharing this recording. Perfect for the musical archives!
George Lyall-What are you talking about! Cilla was the biggest belter of them all. She was having trouble with her voice about this time-but she could out-belt almost anyone, usually. She may have been restrained here, also, because she wanted to give Ethel the limelight. May I recommend YOUVE LOST THAT LOVING FEELING, WHAT GOOD AM I, SOMETHING’S GOTTEN HOLD OF MY HEART, DANCING IN THE STREET, etc.? Cilla was the biggest selling star in England, bar none.
@@brendamckay5751 Thank you for your comment, I am a huge fan of Cilla and already have her entire output in the UK coming from Scotland. I was indeed privileged to witness her perform live, at one point with the 64 piece BBC Concert Orchestra at her 25th Anniversary concert and meet her, I was referring to the style of song and singing here.
None knew Show Business like ETHEL! 💐 💐. NEVER another to equal her! 🏆 At one time, I believe there was a group of 🏳️🌈 men who had a drill team marching in parades. I think it was called ETHELING!
That was a joy to watch.
Cilla doing her duet dance, as I call it, she did pretty much the same steps when she sang with Dusty Springfield!
Thank you!!! Miss Merman also wore that dress on Dick Cavett and Dinah! talk shows.
“SING OUT, CILLA!!!!”
- Paul from above 🙏
