my little brother got this for my birthday a few years back, and even now it's still one of my favorite gadgets.
My mom had a friend who had this and I loved making root beer cotton candy from those little barrel candies. Childhood staple for me

You made the typical mistakes when making it, you have to make sure the stick is at the ready above the machine when you turn it on. Also NEVER put the stick into the machine like you did. Just hold it above the machine and rotate the stick. You will get yhe most perfect, light and fluffy cotton candy ❤

I've had this style machine (still do), and hard candy actually tends to work much better than cotton candy sugar. Life Savers are among the best options, though crushed up Dum Dums can be really fun and flavorfull (just gotta whack-a-mole the stick). Also, crushing up the candy a bit can absolutely make the strands softer, more like regular cotton candy. As other have said, the trick is to hold the stick above the spinner, rather than letting the candy build up. This is not a commercial machine, so the floss will basically get swept back into the spinner, and heating element. My biggest tip is to hold the stick horizontally above the spinner, right after you turn it on, and have it spinning whichever direction feels the most comfortable. Also, be careful about using it outside, as moisture can easily cause the strands to become more like fiberclass (still edible, but much less fun). This machine absolutely won't produce massive amounts of fluffy candy, but it can be so much fun, and is especially great if you're using it for kids, or small get-togethers, especially for how affordable it is.

I have one. The hard candy doesn’t work as good as regular cotton candy sugar as far as the ultimate texture of the cotton candy as you’re eating it (when it melts in your mouth) but still works and is relatively easy to clean. And it’s still working 7 years after I bought it. Definitely 10/10.

Okay I had that machine as a kid, and it was so good! I made jolly rancher cotton candy, peppermint cotton candy, chocolate mint cotton candy, just about any hard candy you can think of! Not jawbreakers through, wasn’t in the list of approved candies

Tip: you have to have the stick in as Soon as you see the cotton wisps coming out, that's how it gets cleanly wrapped around the stick instead of lumping up at the side and collapsing when you try and scoop it with the stick

Oh we have this, those stupid reusable plastic batons don't have enough grip for the cotton candy, the paper cones work so much better... other than that, it's fun being able to make any flavor you have the candy for.
