  • The Basilica of Saints Nazarius and Celsus in Carcassonne combines both the Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles. Construction began in 1096 on a Romanesque cathedral, but as Carcassonne was annexed in 1226 into royal domain during the Albigensian Crusade, the cathedral was reconstructed in Gothic style. Light flows into the church through two large rose windows (one is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin and the other to Christ). In various parts of the basilica, it appears that nothing but stained glass separates the interior from the exterior.
The basilica is dedicated to Saints Nazarius and Celsus, both were martyred during the reign of Emperor Nero. It served as the cathedral of the medieval citadel of Carcassonne until 1801. The Episcopal See was transferred to St. Michael's church in the modern city and it received the title of minor basilica by Pope Leo XIII in 1898.
