What Did U.S. Soldiers LOOT From Hitler's Apartment??? | American Artifact Episode 59

  • In past episodes, we've shown different items that U.S. soldiers brought back as souvenirs and war trophies from their time in WWII. Nearly everyone brought back something that they could show off or serve as a memento from their time in Europe, but the rarest of the rare souvenirs came from the guys who got into Hitler's apartment first. In this episode, we're taking a look at a few of the items that came from the apartment of one of the most evil men of the 20th century.

I never knew the Gettysburg museum had some of these artifacts. I truly appreciate the knowledge. My mother owned hitters dagger with of course paper work and all to prove it , also actually have one of his paintings that he made. when she passed it came into the possession of my brother and I. He wants to sell them, I do not. I actually like hitler and would love to own more of his things. Do you know if there are any other of his things for sale ? I would definitely love to create a bigger collection of his items. Im probably going to buy my brother out on the dagger and painting. I definitely would love to get my hands on his uniform, these items at the museum are they willing to sell?? Especially his arm piece ? This stuff would look so good in my study.

Bravo Eric you’ve shown as much guts as any soldier facing Nazis during WWII, taking them back to Munich the start of all the evil unleashed. You walked the line all alone with those medals. Eric that was heroism I hope J.D shows you this message?

While you may say your not glorifying this person, it seems like your kinda celebrating you have these artifacts, though to your credit, it looks like its in a legitimate museum....though Ive never heard of it. Why not trace his tracks to south America, how that would be real HISTORY UNDERGROUND. I saw part of your other episode, it would have been nice to mentioned that while they treated their prisoners like animals, at least they got a clean death, hanging, a box with their name to be buried in, and a cemetary and a cross...I would have preferred that respect been given to those buried in mass graves just for being something they didnt like. Now youve bascially made a meeting place for hitler lovers and 4th nazis to congregate and remember the past. would have been nice to also mention, how we can learn from germany when it comes to flying certian traitor symbols in our country. If germany can do it, why cant we in the US.

Even though I have been living here for over 17 years now, I never really realized how deeply connected this city is to Hitler and National Socialism. I was in Munich two weeks ago, (been there many times), have studied the history, been to many "historic' places. I was thinking to myself "I bet many of you residents have no idea the significance of the buildings you are passing" There is also a building similar to the one where Hitler had his office just a few yards from it where if you go round the back the building still has the damage from the shelling during the war and I bet not many Munich residents are aware of this.

I remember as a young child going to military sites and museums on a couple of family holidays to the Channel Islands, especially that young you don’t think beyond what you see before you. Eric and those who do a similar job around the world really do need thanking and supporting for the passion and dedication they show in preserving history and the fascinating stories behind the artefacts that they have in their safe keeping. This also brings to mind how in recent times with ISIS and now the Russians in Ukraine we have seen the destruction of historic sites as well as the plundering of museums.

This was a very interesting video. Thank you so much for talking about Lee Miller (she’s my icon on here and IRL). A great irony and set up was that Hitler was a neat freak and the boots were intended to dirty his place. The dirt from the boots was dirt from Dachau where she had been when it was liberated. I highly, highly suggest reading the book Lee Miller’s War. It’s most of her Vogue articles and photos from her time during WWII. She talks about being in Hitler’s apartment. Lee was staying there with Life photographer David E. Scherman who took the photograph.

Interesting video, thanks for making it! About his medals - he had several sets, most serving as a back up. German awards did not have serial numbers or names on them and spares could be officially purchased, so it was a common practice for recipients to keep multiple sets. Main set was his daily wear, probably located in Berlin or where he lived at the later years of the war. Most likely the medals acquired from his apartments were rarely or never worn by him.

It’s amazing to see that these medals still exist today. Incidentally the brown shirt in the photos that he wore the metals on, still exists. Until recently, it was in the international museum of WWII. Unfortunately the museum closed, and supposedly all of these items, sketches, his personal items, paintings, were moved to another museum in Washington D.C. so I hope to see them again, assuming the collection wasn’t parted out. I hope not.

Thank you again for a very informative video. There is a holocaust survivor that lived across the street from Hitler's apartment in Munich. He actually saw her when she was young and had no idea she was Jewish. Her uncle wrote a book criticizing Hitler and his beliefs. I wish I could remember her name. It was very interesting. I had no idea our soldiers had gone into his apartment. But that makes sense. It's sad though that things have been collected and he will forever be immortalized in our world history. He certainly doesn't deserve it.

Vogue photographer Lee Miller spent the night in Hitlers apartment with her colleague and lover Live photographer David E. Sherman and some US soldiers.
During the journey they photographed the liberation and horrors of Dachau concentration camp.
In the evening they returned to Munich in Hitlers Apartment and Lee wanted to stain the bathroom rug with the Dachau mud on her shoes (we can see in the picture). The Picture was probably taken by David with Lee's Rolleiflex. Lee took the same picture with David in the bathtub.

For me, if the provenance is from the original soldier, I'd be more inclined to think he saw an opportunity to sell additional trinkets on the back of his ww2 service history.

Paper documentation from first parties is not conclusive proof. There was a Nazi party badge number 7 that had testimony from Albert Speer that it was definitely Hitler's badge. Even though historians say that his badge was numbered 1.

If American soldiers looted anything in Germany, they deserved it. The Nazis made so many young men and women who should have been at home ESPECIALLY after their fathers fought in the war to end all wars just 21 years earlier, were forced (enlisted and drafted) to go to war and serve the duration unless wounded and crippled. My dad was one of the ones who was injured and lost 25% mobility for life and yet was reassigned to a non-combat role. And it's damn sad that looting from the enemy and therefor bringing home war trophies has since been forbidden. It has been one way of crippling a defeated enemy for as long as war has forced young me to leave their families for as long as there has been war. My favorite war movie is Kelly's Heroes which is about looting the German army so that they get an actual reward that made fighting seem worth their lives for a change.

Bringing home trophies was accepted in those days. I've known for years about various samurai swords, Rising Sun headbands, etc., that found their way stateside. My favourite actor brought home a German sniper rifle. So, for me, it's not surprising. And, personally, it was just a thing that was done then.

The troopship pulled into Halifax Harbour and word went around that military police and civilian police were on the pier and were going to search for German pistols, swords, daggers and any "lost and found" Canadian issued military firearms and appropriate charges would be laid. He said it looked like it was raining around the ship as all manner of souvenirs, including his pistol and belt went over the side or out of port holes. When they disembarked there wasn't any police anywhere on the pier!
