How I Tune Congas

- I've been asked these questions a lot.... "What notes do you tune in? How do you tune? Why that note?"... I know many musicians that choose not to share, but just wanted to show everyone my perspective and what helps with my sound...
Everyone has their own style in tuning and their own methods, some don't even tune in notes... I do that myself at times...which is why it makes playing this instrument so diverse and special... we all have a sound.
FYI... take your time when tuning... TAKE CARE of your heads and don't over tighten... PLEASE make sure you tune each lug evenly... HIT the middle of the head after every cycle so the head can settle... DO NOT BE AFRAID to experiment with different scales and notes... it's ok to break the rules sometimes.

Hi Eric. I love you channel. I have a question about tuning LP Paladium Super Tumba. I have a complete set Paladium with original LP skins. All drum sounds fantastic, but not the Super Tumba. It has a strange over tone. It is very difficult tune it right. Do you have any tips ? I might get a new skin for it. Do you have recomendation for new skin, maybe a manito ? Thanks

Eric , I'm a new subscriber and really love your content and style of teaching. I have a question for someone who is intermediate at best doing play along Latin Jazz and Salsa in my Garage and playing occasionally with friends what is the traditional order to set up 3 drum positions? for a right handed player. I am confused because I've seen different people do different things. Is the quinto between my legs or to my left? Thanks for your help.

Hey, thanks for the video. I wanted to ask, in the first tuning (at 6.00min) it looks like you tune from bottom to top Super Tumba Left E, Super Tumba Right G, Tumba B, Quinto A and Conga C (so the quinto is lower than your conga in this tuning). The B on the Tumba is lower than the A on the Quinto, how can this be? They sound about a tone apart should it possibly be the other way, with the Tumba at A and the Quinto at B?

Hi Master,I watched your great lesson about tone up Congas,I down load the same Toner as you show, my question is how can I for example tone up My tomba to B. When I turn on my toner on the left is logo of metronome and on right is logo of a speaker so should I set the toner on B ( how) then bang the tomb to get B or I have to bang a lot to rich the B which is not happening , Please help me ,Thanks
I tune to whatever amuses me in the moment. Last week my four drums were tuned to Eb minor 7, with the seventh (Db) on the tumba as the low note. Right now they are tuned I 4 5 b7, with the low note being F.

Hello Eric ! Can you tell me how to tune with 3 congas please ? Tumbadora in G3 , Conga in C4 and Quinto in E4 ? Is that good ? In your video , i see you tuned the conga in B3 and quinto in C4 . Am i right ?

The 3rd tuning you show on your phone, the Super Tumba Left is tuned to E#? I'm sure it's just me not reading that correctly, what note should that be? Also in the same tuning, your Tumba at F# doesn't fall between Conga at C# and your Super Tumba Right at G#. Do you purposely tune your Tumba higher than your Super Tumba Right?

I'm new to congas and just bought a set, (11" & 10"). What notes should I tune them to to get that "George of the Jungle" interval? Is that tuned to a 4th?

I have problems sometimes when tunning with the tone even after I get to the note. Sometimes the tone ends up being muffed and not very sustained.. I try to go around even with the wrench.. I try and oil the Cueros and detune them after gigs. Especially my tumba ..that thing is stubborn. I bang with my fist on the head and tighten up with the wrench but sometimes still end up stubby and muffed. Any tips ?

As for wrenches I have the wrench for the congas and my bongos in a small pouch held to the drum with a magnet on the lugs. Really simple. This way I am not looking for them in a bag or something. I'll forget them and then need them as is the case often.

Can you clarify what tuning you might typically use for only three drums? I’m not sure which of these five would be in the position of the segundo in a typical Quinto-segundo-tumba arrangement.
I saw a video with poncho Sanchez he turned his three congas EGC from low to high.
I play two congas & bongos together. I tune by ear. But what notes would you suggest?
Hey Eric, what about the tuning in 10:33? You hit the "A" in Front and than the "B" and the "G" on your right. But it sound B-A-G? How can You explain that? Its magic!

Hi! I've been listening in to you on Facebook and here. I just acquired 5 congas. Nevermind the story behind it where I was just looking for the tumbadora but the price was so incredible for the set, I bought the three. So, I have two congas, two quintos, una tumba. I'd like to tune them as requinto, quinto, conga 1, conga 2, tumba.
Would you be kind enough to add which drum is which in your set up, please. It seems as if your quinto is in the middle, with the tumba on yr right, conga on your left and i don't know what's behind them. Also, could you add the written notes as they'd be on the grand staff? I'm hard of hearing now so pitch wheels won't work. I hear the sound through the vibration, but if I see it written on the staff, my brain knows exactly what it actually "sounds" like. I thank you so much. I enjoy your classes. I've played with many amazing talents through the years, Mongo Santamaria let me follow his lead when I was a young teenager. Best lesson ever!! Whats the lowest you can go with a LP galaxy tumba? When I try F or G, it seems to be to loose and not sing. Or do I have to break in the head? Am I maybe even an octave too low? I've been thinking on tuning to an A, C, D (tumba, conga, quinto)...
On the tumba you should definitely be able to go to a G... you may be just an octave too low on that one... Not sure how new your head is, but if it's new then yes it may need to be broken in... Also... yesss try that tuning... It's always great to experiment.

I can't get that out of my head and it sounds familiar (maybe because you use it for an intro in some videos)...Is that a known rhythm or is that you playing. Hahaha yea I was just messing around and that use to be my intro to most of my videos.... I felt that melody in the moment and it came out the way it did. I thought it came out pretty cool.

My Manito Percussion heads for my bongos come in tomorrow! You mention breaking in heads, could you do a video on this process - how to tell when theyre broken in and do you need to treat them differently until they are broken in?
Yes, you do. The skin is new and it's going to stretch. Detune your drums like two full turns to the left (lefty loosey, righty tighty) relieving the skin on your down time. Before and after tuning or detuning your drums, you're going to want to use the side of yr fist to punch out down HARD smack in the middle to ensure the skin is firmly on its resting seat correctly, not lopsided. There are videos out here that show you that. Best of luck to you.
Am I the only one that struggles with hearing the sound of the drum differently at face vs. what it sounds like to others ears or recording? Using Matadors with original heads. Maybe my ear needs more consistency, but tuning is a struggle sometimes.

Wally soooo in the first demonstration where I tuned one of the drums to “A”... I tuned that to a lower octave... but that’s actually my Quinto which in the second demonstration I tune quite high... it really depends what 3 drums sizes you have currently.
i have the luis conte series from meinl 11" in the middle, 11 3/4" on the left, and 12 1/2" on the right .

I have been working with Bram over the last week or two helping him to test and fine tune the new Bongo and Conga modes and he has done an amazing job. Drumtune Pro can now correctly detect the pitches of all sizes of conga and bongos and comes with a useful recommended tuning range guide. This is a real game-changer for me as a percussionist as I can now tune to specific notes and reproduce the same tunings each time. I imagine the best players in the world can do this by ear to a piano, but for the rest of us mortals this app opens the doors to congas and bongos that sound professionally tuned. every time...
I tune my Congas and Bongos as follows:
Tumba D3
Conga G3
Conga Bb3
Quinto C4
Quinto D4
Hembra D4
Macho F5

Can you explain how to use the app?
I just use intervals because I play on multiple sets of congas (because I'm pretty adaptable and use house congas)
If play on two, I tune by fourths
If I'm playing three, Quinto and Conga are fourths, Conga and Tumba are third
Also, I use my conga as my center (quinto on left, tumba on right)

Hey Eric! I was trying to find that app you mentioned. Most tuning apps just don't work for congas. What is the official name? You mentioned "Tuner", but that just brings up a whole list of different apps, again, most of which suck for congas. Right now I make use of a simple pitch pipe. Def OG. LOL Thanks for all you do.!
