    Back in the day we had three tools! Crescent wrench, screwdriver and a hammer! My Dad’s ‘66 Galaxy 500 , 390 was victimized by my older brother pretty much every weekend! This taught me to be smart, save up for a proper tool set ! Then get a car to repair and drive! Old Dad left me that 66 , I drove it until 1990.

      Yeah I've been doing this since I was a little kid with my dad, he use to have my brother and I help him do tune ups, brakes, bleeding brakes, changing tires, u-joints, oil changes, my dad was a great mechanic and he even showed us how to gap point back in the day. He always told us people aren't going to be babysitting us or holding our hands once we grew up and I'm so grateful we learned how to do these things properly. This guy is really good and I love his lessons and I've seen people make all these mistakes😂

    I was taught to do things properly by my Dad when I was a young teenager teenager. We weren't well off and if we had engine parts that needed replacement we went to a scrap yard. He bought an '58 Opel Kapitan Distributor for £5.00 along with other spares to go into his '65 Opel Rekord Estate, 1500, Lhd. The Army mechanic said "Won't Fit Sir".
    It took us 5 hours to get it in, fully tuned, all systems functioning correctly and ZERO problems.
    My Dad wasn't a trained mechanic but due to circumstances and WW2 had learned "off the grid" methods.
    Engines these days, imo are designed so many things like simple "tune-ups" need to be done in a workshop, thus creating more money for greedy manufacturers!
    I mean, whom ever designed an engine that said engine had to be removed to access the Spark Plugs?

    When you said about the grease 20:07 "It's not going to conduct the electricity that's coming from the wire". you technically said a correct thing, but the same is true for the silicone which is di-electric, which means it also doesn't conduct electricity. a lot of regular lithium grease is used in electrical connections to prevent corrosion. Di-electric grease isn't supposed to conduct, that would be bad as it would allow spark leakage around the boot to the block. the Di-Electric grease (not just silicone) helps with sealing any air gaps with an insulator and any potential boot cracks with the same insulator as well as helping lubricate to prevent sticking.

    Dielectric grease is an insulator. Manufacturers state you shouldn't apply grease of any type to spark plug boots.

    The GTO has different ignition coil. Question... When replacing my spark plugs using a spark plug socket, I had difficulty getting the socket off the plug after installing the new plugs. How can I keep from having this problem. Thanks Len. How do you change the rear bank of plugs on a 2000 Chevy Venture? Was told you have to tilt the engine?

    Fuel filter too if it has one.It is cheaper to replace than replace an expensive fuel pump.A badly plugged fuel filter is the cause of fuel pump failures 99.9% of the time.NGK says not to use anti seize on their plugs and has a TSB on this including mentioned on their website.AC Delco made by NGK and Denso also say no anti seize too.They have an anti corrosion coating on them from the factory.Anti seize causes grounding problems including adding extra friction when torqueing them down over torqueing them breaking them off.Use the OEM plugs it calls for only.Have seen misfires due to the wrong brand spark plugs installed,see this with the gimicky Bosch and E3 spark plugs.

    How about a video about the different ways things are done these days. I had a trans fluid change done at the dealership a few weeks ago. So when I got it back. It was clear they never put a wrench on the drain bolt or the fill bolt. I was sure I got ripped off. So I checked u-tube to see why these bolts had not been removed. Boy, glad I looked. If I had called and complicated I would have been the fool. I found out they don't do it that way. I did see they removed two holes. And that is how they change trans fluid. We're ripped off so often these days we need to be educated.

    Wrong: at 4:00 the ignition rotor does not 'contact' the electrodes to each spark plug; as it rotates by it flashes- over the narrow gap. The only actual contact inside is the center contact from the ignition coil. Dude!

    I hate going behind previous techs and fixing what they messed up when they did the last tune-up🙄I have to bc being the current tech on the car u don't want the customer to think that u left components out of place🤦‍♂️

  • @catfishbilly7425
    @catfishbilly7425 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    2 other common tune-up mistakes. Not cleaning the throttle body and not cleaning the MAF sensor (if equipped). Cleaning these 2 components when doing a tune-up will help keep your car running tip top. Not cleaning them will almost certainly lead to issues with them eventually. A can of BG44k in the fuel tank is also a good idea.

    I own a 2012 sonata 2.4l. I bought it used and was told the plugs that go with it come pre gapped, but can I still at least check the gap with a better/different gapping tool? Also was told not to use anti seize on the threads, and they have crush washers and don’t need to be torqued to spec, just one and 1/4 turn. Does that sound right to you?

    • @plumkey197
      @plumkey197 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can only speak for NGK plugs. It doesn't hurt to check the gap. Even though they are supposed to be pre-gapped, some are not, for ?? reason. The threads on NGK plugs already have a coating of anti-seize from the factory. I usually use a torque wrench after I tighten by "feel", and I'm usually pretty close. It's important to not overtighten plugs in modern engines with aluminum blocks, since the threads are much easier to strip out and crossthread. If you usually use a torque wrench, by all means continue to do so. The torque spec usually is a range (e.g. 22-28 ft lbs) and using a setting between the two values has served me well. And watch where you buy your plugs. Counterfeit Ford, Denso, NGK, and other brands of spark plugs ( and other parts like coil packs, oil and air filters, water pumps, brake pads, etc..) have infiltrated the online marketplace for auto parts. There are a few dozen vids here on YT that delve into this topic, and the problems these knock-offs create are becoming more common and is only going to get worse, going by the shift to online commerce.
