When i was a kid one of my friend brought a book with japanese horror story, one of them was this. And one of them was this. So one of our "class bully" was like 'wat yall readin at" and he saw the image of the ghost, he was scared, genuinely scared, we laughed, so we just used it to bully him back.

Kuchisake-onna was an urban legend that was popular around the 80s. My mom lived in Japan during that time, and the kids and her classmates were genuinely scared of it. The school actually had to make parents and children sign a paper saying that the Kuchisake-onna was fake, and that children shouldn't be scared. There were "sightings" around the school as well, and my mom actually feared for her brother's (my uncle) life because a sighting had occured near his school. Children 100% believed in this legend. There was a way to escape Kuchisake-onna, and that was to yell "pomade" three times.
Also the beginning part is a bit wrong. Since it was more of an urban legend than a traditional spirit or ghost, adults would usually make fun of it and tell kids not to believe in them. However, for traditional spirits like Kappa or Zashiki-warashi, we're told to respect them.
And, they used sickles, not scissors. Maybe in other parts of Japan it was scissors.

A girl I met in a youth house once told me a mother of her friend (who is part-Japanese) actually met a woman with a mask asking "Am I beautiful?" around mid-1980s right in front of her school. She didn't need to answer, because her grandmother happened to honk her car horn to tell she was there to pick her up . The masked woman just up and walked away without saying a word.

I remember hearing this story from a friend and I ended up crying cause I got scared. Then I ended up waking up in the middle of the night crying. I was scared of her for about a month. But now whenever I think of this story I don’t care anymore. This happened when I was 9 or 10. It’s been about 3 years since I heard that story.
