    So dedicated and authentic of Neil to catch a cold for his winter theme videos this week. 😅

    Rather than taping up helmet vents, I find that having a liner specifically made to fit under the helmet really helps. Keeps your head warm and the worst of it out, and if you get too hot you can easily take it off. not really a hack, but if you ride in the winter a lot it is well worth. 45NRTH makes a good one that I use quite frequently

      That’s what I use. It’s a skull cap specifically for use under helmets. I got mine at a pro cycling shop.

    If you hot wax your chain you only have to spray it off with a little rubbing alcohol and it's grit free and won't rust

    • @Kelvallontan
      @Kelvallontan ปีที่แล้ว

      What is "rubbing alcohol"? Is that what's also called isopropyl alcohol?
      I bought wax thinking it would be good, but I see a lot of negative comments on durability in wet conditions, and don't know how to maintain it now that I've done a couple of moderately wet and muddy runs.
      I'm thinking of bathing it in hot water to restart from scratch with oil and try again next summer (it's very dry here so possibly more adapted to waxing).

    • @andrewsiasparks
      @andrewsiasparks ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Kelvallontan yes rubbing alcohol is isopropyl. I use 99% too clear off my chain. I haven't had any problems with durability

      Hot wax shouldn’t get washed of with pure water, so I just hose i down dry it off with a microfibres cloth, let dry and drip wax for next ride.

      I've owned one for years now and have never looked back. I now use it exclusively for washing bikes even with the garden hose adapter. A friend of mine put me on to the worx and he has been using his since around 2016. It's one of my favorite tools.

      I didn't know this was a thing! This is kind of awesome... especially for someone who lived in an apartment. I used to have to use a family members garage and hose.

    I ride all year, rain, snow, wind, I'm ready, people think I'm strange. I want to get two 1.5 hour 160bpm rides in a week, so one needs to be done after work, I use two lights, one on the handle bar and one on the helmet. I need neck turtle fur when it gets cold. I also use gaiters.

  • @kulmajaba
    @kulmajaba ปีที่แล้ว +5

    For those of us dealing with snow and slush: I personally don't like full hardshell pants but hardshell gaiters and waterproof shoes, combined with a proper rear mudguard and a small front flap keep me mostly dry during commutes. Remember, mudguards only look stupid to those who have not felt the luxury of dry butt during wet season!

    Last year I made heated thermal underwear...some cheap heating pads sewed to some decent thermal underpants and undershirt...wired to a 55Wh lithium battery. Already had the battery pack and thernal underwear, spent about $10 on the heating pads. Would recommend. Think I might add a heated seat and grips, next. I might even try one of those 150W 12v car window defrost heaters attached to my handlebars, blowing at my face lol. I have a 50W solar charging unit for my ebike, and about 1150Wh of battery with plans to add more.

    Why tape up your helmet? It looks awful & you are left with tape residue. Get a good urban (e.g. Smith Express or Kali Maha) helmet with fewer vents & put a nice beanie under it. That has been my go-to solution for years. Gore-Tex socks help keep your toes a little happier. Those are my fixes for the PNW riding scene.
