- The number of weather-related disasters to hit the world has increased five-fold over the past 50 years, says the World Meteorological Organisation.
However, the number of deaths because of the greater number of storms, floods and droughts has fallen sharply.
Scientists say that climate change, more extreme weather and better reporting are behind the rise in these extreme events. But improvements to warning systems have helped limit the number of deaths.
As global temperatures have risen in recent decades, there has been a significant uptick in the number of disasters related to weather and water extremes.
In the 50 years between 1970 and 2019, there were more than 11,000 such disasters, according to a new atlas from the WMO that charts the scale of these events.

There's no one magic silver bullet that will solve this problem ! We have the tools already but we really have to start moving ASAP .. We need better transportation system we need solar wind water and probably nuclear power .. We need to plant trees and manage our forests and farms better ! We need direct air capture .. I live on the coast of South Carolina. It has never ceased to amaze me how the rich are building ginormous mansions on sand spits right on the ocean. If the government would just condemn any area that's 75% destroyed in a hurricane and make it into a public park, the damages would go down considerably for the future. Evidently there's too many rich people who live right on the beach for that kind of legislation to happen.

Example, would a narrow valley with high mountains walls would cause more or less or the same flooding event as a flat Topography as vs with the same precipitation rate per hour? yes, it would why? because the rain that hits the walls of the mountain sides, fall into the valley bellow and concentrates all that rain in a small area vs Dallas. Second, rain volume per hour. That is increasing globally! Over the last 20 years, global ocean temperatures are increasing due to co2 holding in heat and that is causing a rapid increase in evaporation! Also, Land surface tempatures are rising, causing a rapid increase of evaporation. The atmphere is absorbing record levels of water vapor. That is causing a rapid increase of Flash floods and major flood events!.

I understand that individuals are responsible for their part in climate change due to supply and demand (and price too). However, governments around the globe have more power to help us avoid irreversible changes. For example, changing laws, taxing for specific wastes (and exceptions when recycling etc). At the end of the day, we all live on the same planet, so it’s everyone’s problem to do something. .

Is anyone aware of an extreme weather data base based on the physics and energy of these events rather than deaths or dollars? Deaths have gone down because of better communications and warnings and dollars have gone up do to more people and building but these are about consequences rather than the power of the events. Neither represents the size and duration of heat, drought, and fires, or the amount of wind, rainfall, and storm surge.

Climate change is better assessed by a lay person by judging seasons by those with maximum or direct sunlight and whether there are cold winds from the North or warm winds from the South.

Look at the effects on limestone statues.
